I am about to take the (installed a few years ago) RSN-E unit over from one Allroad to another (both 2002), replacing the current Symphony II.
I have the radio code for the Symphony II, but NOT for the RSN-E.
Will I need to enter a new code after the swap?
If needed: how can I obtain the code for the RSN-E (I have original receipt from 2007, was bought from NETHERLANDS by previous owner).

VAGcom info from the RSN-E:

Whenever the RNS-E sees a 'new' car, it should require the PIN/unlock code.

Given that, my expectation would be that you would need it.

And it looks likr there is now way of reading it while still in the car.
Just hope that the serial number off the unit is enough for a dealer (VIN won't help since car originally dId nit have it).

I needed to get the code for my factory fit RNS-E in my RS4 recently (removed and sold it) - dealer said they needed the unit's serial number and the car's VIN number to access the PIN code.

There is some conjecture over whether the specific VIN is required, or whether any old VIN will do. In any event, it wasn't an issue for me as they had my VIN on file anyway.
