So I removed my air filter box and found this, I'm guessing it's a bad valve cover gasket? Any other suggestions?

Clean it up, replace the air filter and check back in a couple weeks. This will ensure it's not junk accumulated (or confirm leak) over time, and that it's actually leaking (or not) before you come to any major conclusions.

That's what I would do.

Maybe from oil spilling when doing oil changes? Do as mentioned above then check in a few days.

Yeah, replace the gasket. It's fairly simple, might as well do it. Be sure to clean up the oil that was spilled.

That is Bank 1 of the 2.8L V6 engine and the exhaust manifold heat shield.

Good idea, but I think I would just go ahead and replace the gasket. It'll need to be done sooner or later and I'd be willing to bet quite a bit that that is the valve cover gasket leaking.

I believe this is the 30V V6 which has the oil fill cap on Bank 2, not Bank 1 like the 12V V6. Either way, it seems to be coming directly from the gasket.

Yeah I know the exact area u are working on, in fact i was in there just yesterday for head gasket

It could be either oil spill during refill (very probably) or bad valve cover gasket.

Clean it up nicely and check back in few days to see if it developed any more leak

Valve cover gaskets are like 10 dollars shipped so dont worry too much about it if it is. just get it changed

Oil fill is on the other side. This is a [textbook] valve cover gasket failure. *Exceedingly* common on the 2.8 30V at about 100-120k+ miles. A correct repair should involve the following:

- 2 valve cover gaskets
- 2 Cam Chain Tensioner gaskets w/ half-moon plugs
- 2 Cam bore plugs
- A torque wrench set to 10Nm (7 foot pounds)
- VW #3366 cam chain tensioner tool
- Good quality RTV sealant for the gasket corners
- Very likely some repair of the pcv system when it shatters into a thousand pieces whilst removing the covers

Good Luck.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've been looking around for parts and can't seem to find the cam chain tensioner gaskets or cam bore plugs. Ecs tuning only carries the valve cover gaskets, do I need to buy the other parts from the dealer? Also when I apply sealant, do I apply it to the whole mating surface?

I only put sealant on the corners.

QFT. I've experienced the same both with the PCV system and vac lines.
