View Full Version : FInding Gas Stations on Long Island

Alright....I am just at the 1/4 mark and hate this feeling. I normally fill up at 1/2 tank. I waited 2 hours on Friday night at midnight for close to 2 hours and found out the gas station did not have premium. After seeing the news earlier today, they say the DOD is bringing generators to gas stations that dont have power, but have gas. Bring gas to those that have power, and eventually bring both to the gas stations that need both.
Anybody know of a gas station that 1) has premium or 2) simply is just open with gas?
At the armories, there are pumps stations that will give you 10 gallons for free. You just have to wait in the ridiculous line.
Thanks,
Bill

That's not so accurate. Told me a place at 8 pm had over 1000 gallons left and by 8:05 when I drive by its closed. Shit sucks. Got less then half a tank

Must have read it wrong then. A guy told me of a site that is posting delivery times for all stations on the island but can't seem to find it.

Has anyone used that Hess report with any success? I am leery of it as of right now. I do not want to drive to one of those stations to have it be closed.
Sorry to be a pain, as I appreciate the responses, however, with 1/4 tank of gas I do not want to waste gas.

Check out "open gas stations on Long Island " on Facebook. People posting about open gas stations. Used it last night and got gas in less then an hour.
Cop was walking down the line telling everyone there was only premium , looked at my car and says to me "you'll be fine, there's only premium left". Nice guy.

I had a 1/4 tank yesterday and drove to Stamford, about 40 miles drive. Waited maybe 30 minutes, much better than the 3+ hours people are waiting here with no guarantee. CT seems to have plenty of gas.

I also heard that CT has it better than us on the Island. But I also found out that now first responders are receiving gas at certain gas stations. Just no Premium, which sucks. I hope that everyone is finding gas stations with gas and are able to actually get it.

Took me two days to actually get gas. Not that I was trying to get gas all day, but after waiting close to an hour (twice) I was told that there was no more gas. Then again, I am in Nassau.

I would say that the majority of people got gas last night and today for the rest of the week. Keep in mind, there were more today due to the upcoming storm. No one wants to take a chance. Again, good luck. Also, please ensure you post where you get your gas. By the way, you don't happen to work at JFK Airport do you?

got lucky and found a station in farmingdale on my way home that had only 10 people there.. unfortunately, they didn't have 93oct, so i had to put in 87oct.

Pretty awesome. If you could post the name, it could help others. I asked about if you worked at JFK, because the gas station located at Federal Circle, only has gas for airport employees. And let me know if you notice any drop in gas mileage like I have with the 87.

Mileage has nothing to do with octane.

sure. it was the Sunoco on the intersection of Merrits Road and Hempstead Turnpike in Farmingdale [up]
not sure about the mileage yet, only drove home.. but will do. oh, i also had 1/4 tank of 93, so that may affect it a bit, too. also, i'll be babying it way more than normal since i'm not looking forward to searching for gas again soon.. [:/]

i believe the octane has an effect in gas mileage.

Gasbuddy.com/sandy
will help find gas stations with gas. Gives updates on lines and when a station gets gas.
Plus check Facebook page "open gas stations on Long Island". It's giving updates , and others can post about lines and places getting fuel. Used it the other night and waited less then 45 min at a place from a tip on there.

Nope. This is a common myth accepted by the general public.
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt064.shtm
Check your owner's manual for the most effective octane level for your car. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit — and costs you at the pump. Some cars do require premium fuel, so before you fill up, check your owner's manual to find out if the higher-priced gas is required or just recommended.
Of course our car asks for it, but it really has nothing to do,with mileage but effective against knocking/pinging due to the high compression of our engines.

actually, gas mileage is directly effected by the octane of gas we use in our motors. I'm sorry but posting a link to a .gov website is almost laughable nowadays, US govt has zero credibility
if i am not mistaken lower octane will retard your timing for less power. retarding the timing due to octane would make the engine less effiencient, resulting in lower gas mileage.

I am not arguing that.
If your car requires 87 and you put in 93, better gas mileage will not be the result. This is a fact, and I can post another million sources (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=octane+and+mileage)besides the govt. website if you please.
Retarding timing doesn't 100% mean worse gas mileage.

Running incorrect octane causes a drop in MPG, regardless of whether it is higher OR lower octane. Either way, you get an improper burn which robs power.

Correct, its the other way around that causes no drop in mileage.
