View Full Version : Initial impressions of my 2013 vs. my now forgotten 2010

Picked up my 2013 on Halloween. My prior ride was a brilliant red with Srronic, sports diff and alcantara. New ride is a loaded Stronic, Phantom black, black/red nappa, with titanium rims and heated rear seats. I had two unresolved ssues with my 2010 a gearbox malfunction warning and awful low speed steering shudder. The new steering for me is fantastic, I love it. In my old ride I had the wheel set as low as possible and had to raise it in order to get out. Now set and forget it. New gearshift knob looks and feels great. The old one was very cheap. New MMI layout very polished. I loved my alcantara seats. The new seats look and feel very upscale. The new tranny is in my opinion vastly improved. I did take out the six speed but in the end went with the Stronic. The new sport setting is excellent and similar to my GTI. This will be great for autocrossing. You can actually drive this in auto where the previous tranny I drove it only in full manual. I now drive this one in autoS on the highway only. At 120km/h in seventh it is turning over at about 1800 rpm's which seems too low for me so I have been driving her in fifth or sixth at this speed. Fuel economy is of no concern to me as my gas is paid for. Seventh for me is geared for high speed driving on the Autobaun. With the new gearing ths thing is rocket off the line. This new one is definitely faster. I will not be doing any engine mods with this car for now at least until out of warranty given my previous rides tranny issues. I had my AWE transferred from my old ride to my new one, therefore, I can't comment on how the new exhaust sounds. I can say the AWE is a must mod and worth every penny. My wife and coworker have driven this car and both commented the new one is much much faster off the line. In closing I love this new one and I am very happy I made the switch. Its been raining non stop since since I picked her up. I'll post some pictures after I have cleaned her, anyway..........

Congrats however, everything we have seen so far as far as quantitative data and actual numbers puts the 13 the same or slightly slower than the B8, as well the reason your noticing the lower rpm's is because it seems Audi has changed the gearing in the new B8.5 to improve fuel economy, the slower gearing combined with a 6500 RPM redline in no way equals faster. The comment about faster off the line due to new gearing is actually very misleading.
However, it is possible your B8 was slower than par for some odd reason.
That said, it has been said the programming for the new mechatronic unit is improved and holds gears longer in sport mode which IS awesome. This combined with the nice updates to the interior is a very nice plus.
Just don't like feelings stated as facts.
All my seriousness aside, congratulations on the car, would love to see some pics.

Everything you stated were my initial reactions as well. Mechatronic steering feels amazing and the car does feel quicker, it just does. I keep telling that over and over to people no matter what their graphs and charts read. In the end, isn't it all about how it feels? Even if the graphs read B8 being quicker than B8.5, it doesn't feel that way, it feels the opposite. Congrats on your new whip and great choice on the black/red nappa seats! Awesome!

At first I thought my 2013 S-tronic felt faster than my 2010 6spd S4 but now I'm not so sure. I really miss the 6spd and felt like the car pulled harder with the manual. I'm assuming the gearing is much different between the two types of transmissions. For example I could hit 60pmh in second gear with my 2010 6spd but the 2013 S-tronic requires an upshift to 3rd. I wish we could have full control with the S-tronic without the car upshifting on it's own at redline. I only drove the B8 S4 with S-tronic once for a test drive and can't really remember too much of how that car drove in comparison to the B8.5 S-tronic. All I know is that if I could have waiting another month or so I'd be driving a 6spd! [=(]

You screwed up my friend, you should have waited that extra month, even though I know how hard it is waiting for a car.
To the OP, congratz on your new car. I have driven 2 of my friends b8.5's. They are both manual and they both feelmfaster than what I think my car felt like stock. But my car was only stock for about 500 miles so who knows it could all be in my head.

Yes I know, rub it in! ha. It's a 3 year lease but I got out of my 2010 less than 2.5 years in so I plan to do the same with this car. I might even try next year to see where I'm at. It was an impulse buy since the car was on the lot and the 6spds were a month out. Stupid me! I test drove the S-tronic twice and made myself believe I could live with it. I know this sounds bad but I'm hoping a meteor falls on it while parked outside of my work place. Oh man that sounds bad. The S-tronic was fun at first but now I'm really feeling buyers remorse and need that 3rd pedal!!!!
It will be interesting when there are some actual numbers for the new B8.5''s. VCDS isn't compatible with the new ECU yet for logging, I live 600km away from the nearest 4WD dyno, and have never been to a 1/4 mile track in my life (still 600km away anyway) so I can't really help the cause. Before buying my B8.5 I couldn't tell the difference between the B8's and B8.5's in speed, but they were test drives so I didn't open the cars up too much. I did however do a few pulls from various speeds with a friend who has a GIAC tune and without knowing you wouldn't be able to tell which car was tuned.

Seriously haha.. We were both pretty surprised, I'm sure it would be a different story if we did the 60-130 pulls but you need a pretty long safe flat area to do that. Anywhere in the 0-90mph range was very even.

Wow! What does that say about the B8.5 supposedly being slower? B8.5 running head to head with GIAC Tuned B8. Is what it is right folks.
You have to take it with a grain of salt... It doesn't mean anything until real numbers are available.. I didn't want to post anything since it is going to start a flame war. Also mine is a 6MT so was his. The gearing is identical. Making claims is rather dumb and very "Mazda Speed 3" of me, I just definitely do not feel the the 6MT 13's are at a disadvantage.

I have to say your post is very misleading as well. Because quite frankly the only data we have is the gearing change and a confirmation by GIAC's part. The 6500 redline is confirmed as well. I still haven't seen quarter mile numbers from a side by side race. Nor have I seen a side by side race to prove whether ones faster or not. Granted, I personally doubt either of them is faster. It is a possibility Audi spent some time shifting the torque and power curve down and thus a 7000 redline was no longer necessary. That might be the reason several new 8.5 owners feel like the new car is faster. The OP isn't the first one I've read to say that.
There's also a possibility Audi might eventually have an S Tronic update for the B8.5's. Don't know how probable that is though.

Congrats on the new car, great choice in color combo. I've always been a manual guy but opted for the S Tronic on my 13 as well and have zero regrets. Shifts smooth and extremely fast. I do miss the third pedal on rare occasions, but 99% of the time the S Tronic puts a smile on my face especially when using the paddles. Regardless how good of a driver anyone thinks they may be, a DSG is going to be quicker the majority of the time and its obvious as most manufacturers are going towards these gearboxes and weening off manuals. Still love a manual tranny but the DSG box is pretty darn good in my opinion.

My B8 had the GIAC 91 tune. This car of course does not. All I can tell you guys is that my wife drove my B8 at least once a week. I let her have the new one on two days ago. She commented and I quote "holy f$&k your car is fast". My coworker compared it to his cousins R8 manual. He said "there's little difference in power" he was very impressed. He's not a car guy but kept going on and on about how much better it felt to my 2010. I drove the manual 2013 S4 but decided on the Stronic as there are three drivers in the house. If nobody else were to drive this S4 then I may have gone the manual route. Motor week tested a manual S5 and an Stronic S4 and the S4 was faster to 60. Anyway.....

We need someone to get to a dyno or track. The only way I see the 13s being faster is if Audi put a slightly smaller supercharger pulley in it and cut the red line down to compensate. The longer gearing is undeniable, though. I never say never but color me skeptical.
We should have a good idea when GIAC release their code soon.

It's posts like this that make me feel better about making the switch to S-tronic/DSG! I have this silly idea to give my wife my S4 and go out and buy a VW Golf R. I have issues. [:D] I tend to drive the car with paddles 99% of time I'm driving and for the most part it is entertaining. I just wish I had the chance to drive a B8.5 manual before I made the switch S-tronic. I think I need to stay away from these forums because it's when I see guys taking delivery of 2013 6spd' that I get all bent out of shape!

Agree with all your comments OP. As someone coming from a 2012 B8 stronic to a 2013 stronic, I was really surprised by how different it overall felt. Graphs and charts aside, its all about how it feels to me. Other than the cosmetic/tech enhancements (which are great!), the engine is also much smoother in city traffic, and noticeably more aggressive in 'dynamic/s' modes. This is comparing stronic to stronic, probably not as noticeable on a manual. I loved my B6, B7, B8 and now B8.5... cant go wrong with the S4 regardless...

It's got only 300 km on the clock. If it had 1,500 km I would be there in a heartbeat. I did 12.9 at Cayuga with my 2010 at 109 mph. With all this poor weather I'm busy making cash tomorrow. I can't pass it up. I'll be there if and when you guys go in the spring. My 2010 was an early model less launch control. I'm eager to use that. Have fun.

The B8.5 definitely feels faster and sportier than the B8 even though they're the same on paper. Just throwing in my 2 cents.
During my 2 test drives with the B8, I remember feeling like I would have to put in a few mods to get it to where I would be happy.
Having since driven my B8.5 for the last few months, I'm very surprised how sporty it feels compared to what I remembered with my test drives.
I'm still gonna put the full Eurocode loving on it though to improve the handling feel. It feels fast enough right now so I'm not in a hurry at all for a tune just yet.

There is no denying there is slightly less parasitic loss from the new steering. Enough to be measurable, probably not.
Unfortunately, there is no way this will every be settled, because cars change in performance over time. You would need to compare a 2013 with a brand new 2010-12 and they don't exist anymore. They would also both need to be broken in identically. Even then, there is some degree of variability even between two identical cars.
Clearly, it is not enough to be a factor in someone's decision to go new or used at this point. I'll say this though, coming from a lightly modified LS2, the S4 could definitely use more. I hope they crack the ECU soon.

My bet is that they're pretty much identical in a head-to-head performance test. Even with the same model, one can be faster than another like one will burn oil and one will not.
The B8.5 feels faster & sportier due to the much louder exhaust in Dynamic mode.
The new steering feel and the fatter sportier wheel itself has a lot to do with it also. I'm pretty certain there's an actual improvement here.

The changes to the 2013 were worth the extra money. I already had a B8. It was a B8.5 S4 or S5. Since I already had the PSS10, AWE and winter rims and tires I chose the S4. The 2012 wasn't one of my choices. This car defonately is diffent and feels faster than my 2010 which was GIAC flashed. It's not only me that feels this it is also the others that drove my previous ride and this new one.

Have fun.

You know what the good news is, everyone likes what they individually purchased and that's all that matters.

If you're a person who appreciates the details then the 2013 is a great upgrade. Overall it's a considerable upgrade to me cause I notice every little detail improvement.

i drove both before i had my apr flash and did not notice a difference in performance. there are some things better in the 13's but not enough that i would sell my '12, take a loss (mods aside), then pay more for a '13. i would rather wait a year and put that money towads an S6. there are things i like better about the '12...like the led shape in the front and rear...stupid, but just my opinion. i think these threads aresome what biased because if you sold a b8 and bought a b8.5, of course you are going to say the b8.5 is better. seems many of the repsonses are b8.5 owners. if the thread was written "switched from b8.5 to b8 and its better" then it would be b8 biased. i say be happy with what you have, and if you aren't, buy whichever one you like. congrats to you op, glad your happy with your choice ;)

For what it is worth, I prefer the front and rear LED's of the 2010-2012. However, the fronts are starting to grow on me, I doubt the rears ever will.

I'm an independent catastrophe adjuster. Therefore I respond to property claims in places such as New York and New Jersey due to the unfortunate hurricane there. I generally never leave Canada, however, we are needed stateside. This is the first time we have been asked to attend the states. We have responded to the floods in Australia and the earthquake in New Zealand. I feel for my friends south of the border, terrible mess. Most are not covered. We are responding to business losses only as most have flood coverage, however, with high deductibles. Our local hydro crews have responded as well.

The flat bottom steering wheel makes the car feel faster.
Hahaha... you said it! Best part about the B8.5! As soon as they get F1 style wheel the car will be complete.
