Debating whether to go with an APR 93 tune or get some winter tires on my OEM wheels for the winter (I currently have 19inch performance summer). We only had 3 inches of snow last year for 2 days (Kentucky).

I will decide on the next 7 responses....lol

Buy the fucking winter tires man, it's a safety item. What good is a tune if you put the car in a ditch?

+1

In my previous car (Mazda3), was doing 55mph just like everyone else in very light snow conditions when I suddenly spun out (think I completed a 720 -- kinda cool thinking back) on the freeway. Luckily no one was hurt and minor damage to the car, but my stock tires were nearing the end of their live plus, I found out later, are rated horribly in the snow.

After that, you realize the only thing holding you to the ground are your tires. Like the OP said, the tune may be awesome but tires (i.e. car life expectancy haha) is more important.

Also, order the winter tires ASAP. Inventories get depleted very fast.

Winters. Saw a few totaled S4s on here last year because of ice. I don't want to see any this year.

safety and maintenance above performance upgrades. always. the fastest car stuck in a ditch or snow bank isnt going to do you much good.

That is the dumbest advice ever. Please leave.

P.S. I'm glad you don't live in my state.

I expected that and probably deserve it. I admit what I did wasn't all that smart, but 2 days of snow is barely anything. Would you offer the same advice to someone in southern Florida?

Summer tires will get chewed up on cold pavement, even if it doesn't snow all winter.

There is currently a couple feet of snow on the ground where I live and the Conti DW's are terrible in snow. I wasn't able to get a tire-change appointment until Friday at 9am. I ended up getting stuck in my alley today leaving for work. I'm not driving the S4 for the rest of the week... Way too sketchy.

My local apr dealer said their having a deal all of November after thanksgiving.

They said I can get all the programs for like $100-$150 or something. You know like anti-theft- fault codes - stock mode - etc etc etc

Ill probably get it, for that price you can't beat it.

However i dont think the sale discounts the tune.. not too sure though

BUT ANYWAYS

I just got my APR tune a few days ago................ hahah as much as i hate to say this...get the winter tires for your safety..

I love california.

This is the smart / right choice.

Get the tune once you can actually put it to the test without worrying about the weather.

the summer tires turn rock hard in the cold. even if there is no snow, it will be terrible.

Not just the snow its the temp. Once it dips below 40 or 50 degrees those summer tires become worse and worse. Get the tires. Your summer tires will last twice as long.

No snow here but I really should have my winters on because it's like 0 degree! Thanks to Sandy... warming back up to 9 degree today.

I can't believe this is a question...but glad you made the correct choice in the end. I don't see the rush for tune/chip..the car is plenty fast for daily driving, unless you are tracking in winter, it can wait. I am waiting for another year or so before I tune to ensure nothing is wrong with the car and after tune, the car will feel different..sort of a new car feel.

put the new winter tires on the stocks, and get some nice aftermarket wheels for summer.

I would buy winter tires. I did before I bought my S4. There is no greater feeling than being safe on the road and being able to avoid accidents in front of you.

APR tune. Just don't drive the S4 until spring.[:)]
On a more serious note, when you drive your summers under 10degrees Celsius they become hard. After about 2 winters if you still have your summers, they will not be as soft and grippy as they use to be due to repeated use in the winter. The cold changes the compound in the summer tires and makes them harder much faster. I have winters tires that were used for 5 winters and they are almost rock hard even in the summer because the winter weather has changed the compound of even the winter tires.
