Verify everything with H&R on the phone with what is marked on the spring....not on the box and not with the distributor. I did the same thing and my rears were wrong. I have never seen a blue set of oe springs. i suppose they could have changed the colors, but also noticed the rubber coating around the tight coils is on the rears and not on the fronts.....historically, it is on both or just the fronts. just trying to save you some of the pain i went through. Nice exahust choice, I think that's my next mod.

well_armed, I'm curious about your initial impressions of the TSW Nurburgring's (19x9.5) w/ Michelin PSS. I know based on your signature you don't have the 2013 S4 yet, but what's the stretch look like on those wheels with a 19x9.5? I inquired with Elliott at Modbargains and he came back with the same recommended size that you have. I am concerned it would look stretched because of the 9.5" width. Judging from your pictures it really doesn't looked stretched at all but maybe it looks different in person? Is there any chance that once the wheels and tires have the weight of the car it would look any more stretched? What color S4 did you order? Did you by chance get the adaptive suspension (I see you have springs already and waiting to install)?

Did you (and do most people) lean towards getting the AWE exhaust with resonators vs without? I like what I hear in the youtube videos but I'm sure in person it's different. Given that you had a 2010 with the AWE and now a 2013, does the soundaktor take anything away from the AWE sound or does it just add to it nicely? I know I can quiet it down in the MMI, but was curious what your opinion is with having both.

You cannot lower the car, have 19x9.5" ET41 wheels, with a tire size greater than 255 -- without rubbing. The PSS do not stretch as much as the OEM rubber, as from the factory they are a wider tire (not all tires are the same, regardless of sizing spec). I debated for a month about what wheel size to get, brand, color, etc. The stretch should stay the same, if not bet better with weight.
At the end of the day, it had to fit my build goals:
-Lower the car 1"
-No spacers
-Get wider wheels (flush look w/o spacers)
-No rubbing
I read the entire wheel fitment thread, from post #1 to learn all about fitment, clearances, look, etc. I suggest you do the same! :)
My Build:
*2013 S-Tronic
*Monsoon Grey Metallic
*Adaptive SUS
*Sport Diff.
*MMI
*B&O
*Adv. Key

Confirmed. Soundkator makes a HUGE difference with exhaust sound inside the cabin.
Turning it on Comfort, WOT pulls on the freeway the exhaust was refined yet barked from the back end of the car. Same scenario on Dynamic, the cabin was filled from front to back with more exhaust note. It was quite substantial.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've read through large sections of the wheel fitment thread but I can't remember everything I read. I'll need to go back through it again. I'm excited to hear how things work out once you get your car and the go-fast bits installed. I'm curious what your feedback will be with the adaptive suspension and the lowered springs with regards to ride quality/harshness in the various settings.
Also, thanks for reporting back the sound on the AWE exhaust with the soundaktor. Is there any drone in the car with the AWE that's bothersome?

You'll love the Alu Kreuz. Eurocode installed the AK on my 2013 S4 last week. I alread had the USS sways and end links.
What were your impressions of the handling characteristics with JUST sways on vs. after the AK went on as well? I had my eurocode sways installed yesterday (haven't REALLY had the chance to fully test them out) but overall they did not make as BIG of a difference as I had hoped. They are definetly noticeable, but not to the extent I was hoping. Did you find the AK made a BIG difference above just the sways?
My AK will be delivered when the group buy ends. Can't wait and really hoping it stiffens this car up in the turns, still too much squishy body roll for my tastes!
OP, SICK ride man!!! Congrats on finally getting it, hope you have a great install day today!

I thought the sways made a huge difference, more than the later addition of the AK. The sways changed the understeer to 95% neutral handling on corners and virtually eliminated the OEM body roll. The addition of the AK simply tightened up the steering a bit, especially noticeable on fwy and initial turn in during hard cornering.

Well, after a couple hundred miles under my belt, I can confidently say that these modifications make a serious difference on the cars handling profile.
BTW, it took me 8 hours with 2 guys to install the following using a lift.
H&R Springs
Eurocode Front & Rear Sway bars
Eurocode Front & Rear Endlinks
Eurocode Alu Kruez
SPC Adj. Upper Control Arms (front)
AWE Intake
AWE Exhaust
This is with a beer and pizza, smoke breaks, and learning on the job.
The Alu Kruez makes a significant difference in giving the feedback to the car. The best way to describe it is that when doing small inputs off dead center, before the feel was numb and completely void from any hydraulic feedback that you are used to sensing. NOW, it is much tighter and natural feeling. I can see how the guys at eCode say the AK makes a larger difference in B8.5's with the electronic steering module.
The sways do exactly as they are supposed to. Car is much more flat in turns, and now easier to induce on-throttle oversteer. Springs I suspect are more of a look than actual handling benefit, although the car is lower to the ground, I suspect the sway bars could achieve the result most are looking for if they want to keep the stock ride height.
AWE exhaust is pure sex. Tons of videos and reviews out there, so I won't waste any time.
Only issue we encountered was with the APC adj. front control arms. The drivers side sticks out a little more than the right (matched the length of the stocks independently), which causes some slight rubbing on the plastic fender liner when hitting bumps, or pushing the suspension up into the wheel well. (right above the arm). I had to trim a tad bit of plastic to make room and all is good. I suspect that when I get an alignment it will gain more clearance.

Appreciate the input on the AK. What you described is EXACTLY what I am looking for! More precise steering feedback. This to me is what is lacking most from the factory with the S4 compared to other cars I have had. My 11' G37 provided excellent feedback between the road and my hands and adding sways greatly improved the body roll issues. I had expected a similar change in the S, but apparently the item that fixes this the best is the AK. I am now very much looking forward to getting the AK installed! Thanks for the info!

Come to find out, the ADS cars come with a 0.5" plastic spacer (REAR ONLY), as the ADS springs are shorter than the non-ads equipped springs.
Greg @Eurocode informed me of this head scratcher after I couldn't figure out why my H&R OE springs were sitting higher than comparable cars.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8508/8348904601_417c77226d_z.jpg
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8468/8349967852_d6353ee800_z.jpg
I had to actually put the car back on the lift and take the spacer out, and now all is well.
FYI for you ADS equipped cars.
#11 is actually comprised of two different pieces on the ADS cars.

Fender measurements
Before:
Front/Left: 26.10
Front/Right: 26.15
Rear/Left: 27
Rear/Right: 26.75
After removal of plastic piece:
Front/Left: 26.10
Front/Right: 26.15
Rear/Left: 26.5
Rear/Right: 26.25
It is not that the ADS cars sit higher but the rear ADS springs are slightly shorter than non-ads equipped cars.
When we do any spring install on a ads car, we remove the plastic spacer to ensure the car sits as the customer has expected.
well_armed
01-05-2013, 11:36 AM
The way I understand it, the rear spring on ADS equipped cars is shorter. So therefore to achieve the same stock height, they use a plastic spacer.
When you stack the H&R up next to the OE rear spring, it is not that much shorter.
I installed the rear springs with the spacer, and the rear was actually sitting much higher (rake effect) than the front. This is what got me searching (took over a month to figure this out) and contacting various vendors (including H&R themselves). It may sound trivial for such a cheap mod, but half the reason is for the look, and I wasn't satisfied knowing it was wrong. Greg from Eurocode actually solved the mystery, after I called him and asked that maybe my height was being affected by sway bar preload (as I installed their full USS system), as the rear sway bar endlinks are not adjustable like the fronts.
Thursday night I took the spacer out, and reinstalled the springs. The car sits how others do on the forums (comparatively), and the wheel gap is now consistent with the front.
Non-ADS cars do not have the plastic spacer, so I am 100% positive that it will need to be removed for the H&R springs to sit the way they were intended.
Additionally, the ride is much better now that the spring is stretched out to spec.
This is with the spacer removed.
Much bettar.

And here is a buddy of mine's response to asking which graph to use (SAE vs. Uncorrected):
Cliff Notes: Use uncorrected Dyno numbers (no SAE correction or smoothing) with forced induction engines.
SAE correction factors correct for changes in Temp, atmospheric pressure
and humidity. SAE standard conditions are: 77F, 29.23"/Hg, 0% humidity.
The typical relationship to power is: as Temp increases Power decreases, as
pressure increases power increases, as humidity increases power decreases.
Looking at the conditions for run 3 the pressure was very close to
standard. That's why run 3 didn't show much change between Uncorr and SAE.
The temp, pressure and humidity all were different between run 3 and run 9.
In run 9 the temp went down and the pressure went up. The actual humidity
was probably quite close to the same, as Relative humidity % is dependant
on the temp. So temp down and pressure up explains why the SAE correction
would have your Run 9 power down. The problem is that the SAE correction
factor, especially for pressure, doesn't work well for forced induction
engines. The turbo is controlling the pressure entering the intake system,
not the atmosphere. There was likely very little to no difference in
cylinder pressure during your 2 runs. On top of that you have an
intercooler influencing intake air temp, and changing the effect of air
temp on actual power from the SAE correction.
So I'd recommend looking at the Uncorrected numbers to judge the mods in
this case.
The smoothed vs un-smoothed doesn't really make much of a difference.
Unsmoothed is just a straight line drawn between each point of data.
Smoothed is a best fit curve between points to help eliminate noise and
outlying points. I don't know what the sampling rate was in these runs.
If its very high a smoothed line can be very accurate and better to use.
If the sampling rate is low smoothing can introduce more error. Remember
the max power and torque number really isn't very meaningful. The
important thing is area under the curve, or the gap area between the line
of the runs being compared. Based on the Uncorrected graph I'd say this
intake and exhaust gave you a nice increase especially at high rpm
Just an FYI.

Background:
After installing the Eurocode's USS suspension kit myself (sways, links, Alu, etc.), I liked their build quality-- and most importantly -- the performance gains met my expectations.
I purchased an AWE exhaust and intake from Alex @Tag Motorsports (and BBS wheels) -- loved the system. It gave me a dyno proven 10whp gain on pump gas. The sound was great, droned @1500-2000 RPMS with slight throttle, but I was happy with the overall sound it provided.
Eurocode's headers were always on the radar, but I just spent $2K+ on an exhaust and didn't want to spend another $3500 (with install) on the header package. I also was on the fence of whether or not I wanted to go that far modifying the car -- afterall I was waiting for Stasis to come out with their tune.
Well, once I convinced myself that headers were a worthwhile modification, (and a little research) I realized I had a little problem with the AWE exhaust being too loud with the catless headers. I needed a Milltek resonated system to mate with the new headers, but that would take weeks to procure from the local distributor.
Enter Eurocode.
I called up Greg and told him my situation, and we cooked up an awesome solution. He'd sell me Dave's milltek system (off his own car), and Dave would install my AWE on his car until the new milltek's came in from the UK. I was definitely impressed with the fact that they were willing to do that.
After driving from Seattle to Los Angeles (wife was visiting with my daughter @Disneyland, so I surprised them), I dropped off the car the next morning with Greg. They installed the headers in one day. Since I was visiting friends (ie. drinking that night) I told Eurcode to keep it overnight and take their time.
Recap of Eurocode's Customer Service:
-Great deal on the installation since I was driving from Seattle
-The owner gave me the exhaust off his own car, since they couldn't get one in time for my impromptu road trip
-Sold me Greg's headers he was going to put on his own car
-Boxed up and shipped my old exhaust to the buyer
-Free tank of gas to get me home, and a comped the alignment because their local guy took forever to complete
Impressions:
After driving it for 24 hours, I can say without a doubt the power increase is noticeable. The torque comes on sooner, and it pulls with more gusto towards redline. Remember, I drove down fromSeattle (1200 miles) just a few days ago, so the stock feel is still in my muscle memory. It just breathes better.
The AWE system was installed on Dave's car, and it is so fucking loud that you would have to be 21 to think its cool (wink: Auditude). The milltek on the other hand is almost as quiet as a stock system while putting around town, but throws the V8 bark when you step on it. The sound of the Milltek with the headers is great, it is definitely different from the AWE lamborghini tone, but it is OH so sweet sounding (both inside and outside the car).
Most importantly, it is wife approved. She thought the AWE was too loud, the new exhaust is "great!"
Inside the cabin, it is a civil sounding combination. It idles the same, cold starts much quieter than with the AWE, and has considerably less drone in 7th gear @2k rpm vs. the AWE (even with Headers!). Surprisingly, I almost find the milltek/header combination quieter than a stock AWE system.
Milltek:
http://youtu.be/jLZFzufQE6k
AWE:
http://youtu.be/iqI37FTLHaQ
Conclusion:
If I were to do it all over again, I would go Milltek from the beginning and install headers before I get an exhaust to begin with (stock pipes if necessary). Exhaust is basically for sound, and the headers give this to you with a healthy performance gain to boot. Pound for pound, its more logical and economical for the gains to get headers. I am a believer.

+1, this is correct! The B8.5 Stage II tune will be released along with B8. According to my conversations with GIAC the B8.5 DSG Tune may take a bit longer to be released due to new torque monitoring functions in the ECU for the B8.5s..... just my luck :-)

On these cars, the Downpipes are located after the headers and cats to provide additional sound tuning. No performance gains to be had, just a change in overall volume. Headers are where you would pick up additional power due to a restrictive factory system.

Wow! Nice setup. Looks like you've been having fun. :)
If you don't mind losing the use of your visor there's a $5 Escort mount that clips on. I almost never use my visor and it keeps the detector out of sight.

Loks good, got them all bedded in now? How's stopping feel, and pedal modulation? Take it you put in some high temp fluid?

They are second hand and I am sure they owner bedded them in...but I am going to re-bed them tonight. Some 3am I-90 runs are necessary, as they tell you to do (10) 60-10mph hard braking (80%) intervals, followed up by a cooling lap (then do it again after they completely cool).

My modulation and pedal feel is better than on my old Cayman! But I think Emergency Brake Assist exaggerates how strong these are, and I will try to disable it over the weekend and test. This only matters when you jump on / mash the brake to enable EBA.

Well the rain put a damper on my plan to bed them in tonight. Maybe tomorrow evening.
So far so good, the pedal feel is rock solid. Doesn't have the same 'bite' the stock pads have, but is much more linear from beginning to 'oh fuck'
Track day here I come!

Bought them off a guy on the East Coast (he had a part out thread). The shitty thing was he had them removed/shipped from Excelerate performance (same shop I was going to buy from), and they showed up in the worst pack job I have EVER seen.
Basically all the parts were loosely thrown into some smaller boxes with no padding, and the rotors were actually stacked on top of each other (grinding their way here). Laziest tuner shop pack job I have ever witnessed. I was fuming when they showed up, but now I am calmed down after inspecting and installing (and everything is okay).

I mean who packs over 80 lbs of stuff into one box with absolutely no padding or reinforcement?

Bite should be there after bedding. I am driving a loaner A6 S-Line (that thing is FAST and SMOOOOTH and BIIIG) and brakes scare me. I have much more bite, feel, etc.

Yes. Mil every 4-8 days.
I only have to deal with it until giac releases their stage 2 test pipe file.
People keep asking me how much I have put into the car, why didn't I just buy a corvette, or GTR, or Porsche or whatever. What they don't understand is I picked this car for two reasons:
1) I always wanted an S4 when I was in high school. But alas my 93 Astro Van was all I could afford.
2) I wanted a fast daily driver, handles well in the rain (Seattle), holds a couple car seats, and doesn't scream "Hey look at me, I want you to think I make a lot a lot of money!"[/B]
The GTR (which I almost bought) would have been too flashy. The S4 slides in nicely in my realm of speed and refinement. And most people just think I drive an A4 with nice wheels. :)
Couldn't agree with you more. Coming from a modified RS4 I was ready to get into something that could be civil when I want it to be (e.g. driving with the family) but a great sports sedan when it doesn't need to be 'quiet' (e.g. during a beautiful SoCal sunny day and driving up Hwy 2 or PCH, etc, etc). I will definitely miss the RS as it was the best car I have owned thus far in my life but Im loving the S4 and am happy with my choice. Now its a matter of holding off on modifying it for a bit despite my desire to buy buy buy :) "Enjoy the car as it stands" I keep telling myself....we'll see how long that lasts! [evilsmile]

Bought a rebuilt set of Ohlins SL (Stasis Challenge) coil overs from Jeff @SPM. Super easy to install, and so far so good. Low speed bump compliance is night and day better, less bounce, etc. -- over H&R Lowering springs.

That's right! Coilovers combined with front and rear sway bars, drop links, DTS, and control arms are the deal. I have KW V3s (at 1.5" drop) and every time I drive a car without coilovers that's the first thing I notice. I have the front/rear camber at 2.00/1.75 degrees. 2.25/2.00 is the recommended, but I was concerned about tire wear.

I'm focusing in on the KW V3s rather than the Bilsteins, Konis or Stasis/Ohlins. I'm curious if you did any kind of comparison evaluation of those. From what I've learned, the KW V3s seem like the best option, but I'm keeping an open mind and interested in hearing from others.
Do you get any sort of ADS warning light on the dash with the coilovers on or does the error code only pop up in a vagcom scan?

And yes I have a MIL on the dash, I am trying to work that out right now in the VCDS post.

I picked the KW V3s after reading the forums and talking with people, especially David at EuroCode - when he is not busy he will talk for hours about this stuff. A lot of people track the KWs and they can handle it. Are they the best, who knows, but I am extremely happy with the ride and handling. I can never go back.

You've come a long way real fast, and you picked up some fantastic parts along the way. The track vid looks amazingly fun. I have yet to do a road course- been to auto-x and down the strip numerous times, but have my heart set on going to VIR or a good road course soon. Do you have ADS- if so did you lose the functionality of the suspension with the Ohlins? Keep up the modding- looks great man!

Setting up suspension is tough. I trust Stasis to do there job and pick the right valving for me. I like a product that was developed specifically for my car and weight, etc.
I've had adjustable High/low rebound and Compression stuff, and it is very difficult to setup properly.
But to answer your question, yes it eliminates the ADS function as the OEM struts were taken off the car.

Love this thread -- how are you liking the stoptech? I went to the track last weekend for a DE with everything bone stock. I can tell I'll need larger brakes or better pads -- something. Although they did well, I experienced some fading at the end of my runs. Also, more stopping power the better in general, so I am looking into stoptech as well as carbotech for pads. Thoughts?

Question about the install of your former H&R OE sport springs. I believe you originally put them on prior to the coil-overs. When they get installed did you have to take apart the multi link suspension in order to get the oem ones out and put the H&R in or can they come out an easier way like compressing? When I asked my local shop they thought the suspension has to be disconnected. I've never done springs which is why I'm asking.
