Can someone definitively explain what causes the 4x4 looking wheel gap when changing wheel/tire dimensions?

For example, I have a B8 S4 with stock 19s. If I go for 18x9.5 V710s with 255/40/18 for winter, how will the wheel gap compare to what I have now? It seems like the total diameter is very close, so the distance between the fender and the wheel should be the same right?

I've seen some wheel swaps cause a horrible amount of gap, is it because the total diameter is changing?

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

Correct tire sizes should result in a consistent overall rolling diameter regardless of wheel size. You're only replacing inches of metal with rubber or vice versa.

More wheel gap would mean the overall size of the wheel with tire ended up being smaller (a good example would be the lowrider style 60s and 70s Caprices that roll around in smaller diameter size wheels).
