so i just bought an Automatic FWD 03 A4 1.8T with 95k miles as a gift from me to me for my birthday. When i went to test drive it, it had an issue that i couldnt put my finger on but i bought it anyways because the service records were outstanding (new turbo, tires, axle assembly, timing belt, some ignition coils all done between 83k and 90k)

the issue is that it makes a quick jerk at low RPM, seems to be any time between 1st and 3rd gear (they change so fast its hard to tell). This is only really happening when I start from a stop. Occasionally feel it on a cruise. So i drove it around monitoring the RPM closely, went very slowly (not even 10mph) and it seemed to make the jerk around 1200RPM. Then i would drive it normal traffic speed (35-45MPH) and it would occur from 1600-2000RPM around the time the gear shifts. Then i pushed the accelerator to 3/4 and the RPMs would shoot to about 3200 and idle until i pushed farther and then the turbo would kick in better; but i didnt feel the jerk when doing this. Now here's the tricky part - I switched it into tiptronic and drove slowly to 3000RPM in 1st gear from a dead stop a few times, each time i felt the jerk around 1600-2000RPM depending on how hard i was accelerating - but i wasnt shifting so i figured this couldnt be a transmission problem. Keep in mind that this jerk didnt occur when downshifting or slowing to a stop, only after a start. And i only feel it jerk one time each time, it isnt a rumble feel or a stutter, just a very brief jerk.

Everything in the car seems stable, it runs fine, starts immediately, drives perfect. Except for this little jerk and it gets annoying because I drive in a high traffic area with constant stop/start and that is when it occurs as it seems.

Motor mounts ?? Put the car in drive hold the brake and give it gas at the same time.. watch the engine see if it jumps up.

Hi I don't mean to hijack this thread but i have the same problem with my car.

Its not throwing any codes, I have had the engine mounts, pcv, coils, spark plugs all changed but its still doing it. Also the trans module has been changed too.
Is there anything else that may be causing this problem?

I had the same issue with my 04 Audi, it seemed to be an issue with the trans. Had to have the trans rebuilt, works fine now, Happy I had that warranty. Never did find out exactly what it was. I'll ask the dealer when I get back from deployment.

If it's transmission related it could be the torque converter. Audi torque converters seam to have issues - if you search the topic you might be able to find more information.
