View Full Version : Sometimes it pays to read the manual v. The 2013 MMI Nav + supports >4000 files

So, according to the manual for the MMI Nav. + system found in the 2013 S4 there is no ~4000 file limit on memory cards or USB devices like the 2010-2012. There are 2 restrictions listed in the manual.
1) Max of 5000 files per folder
2) Max of 1000 files per playlist
I tried it with a 32GB SDHC card with 7000 files on it across many folders and I had no issues skipping around playing files from all over the card.
Per the manual, it supports album art up to 800x800px embedded in the file of type JPEG, GIF, & PNG. I have seen the album art first hand, so I can vouch that it works.
Also of note is that the updated system can play video files (MPEG-1/2, DiVX, Xvid, H.264, and WMV9) up to 720x576px, up to 25FPS, with bitrates up to 2000kbit/sec.
It does not support SDXC cards (they're not listed as supported). 32GB is listed as the max memory card capacity it supports.

Seriously??? Damn you lucky 13+ owners. I wonder if there is a setting that can be set via VAG-COM.
I have two SDXC 64Gig cards in my car now and they are working perfectly. The MMI could not read them until I formatted them to FAT32 though. One of my 64Gig cards is completely full of music and loads within a few seconds. I am not sure how quick the pre-facelift MMI loaded lard SD cards but the load time impressed me.
I can also vouch that the album art works perfectly.

Based on further research it is possible for a device to support the SDA 3.0 hardware spec (ie: devices up to 2TB) but not support SDXC. The MMI manual is very clear that it only supports FAT and FAT32 file systems. SDXC uses exFAT. If Audi / whoever made the radio didn't license exFAT from Microsoft they could easily have a Radio that will work with any SDXC card that has been reformatted with a FAT32 partition, but yet can't be advertised as supporting SDXC (because of the file system). Trying to explain how to reformat SDXC cards to FAT32 and why it's necessary fully and adequately in the MMI Nav + manual to non computer savvy people in a way that wouldn't create support headaches would be nearly impossible, so they simply said the card limit is 32GB / SDHC.

Nice. I had read all that in the manual and was going to order a few 32GB cards, but if 64GB work fine after a reformat, perhaps I'll go that route instead.

Yes, one of the cards has 60GB of music on it and I have not had any problems playing any of the tracks.
The cards are Patriot EP Series SDXC 64GB cards. Like I said previously, the MMI could not read them until I reformatted them to FAT32.

Nice. I had read all that in the manual and was going to order a few 32GB cards, but if 64GB work fine after a reformat, perhaps I'll go that route instead.Based on what I read it really seems like the only real difference between a SDHC card and a SDXC card is the file system on the card. I found lots of references that any PC based SDHC card reader will work with SDXC cards if the PC supports exFAT. It's also very clear that a SDXC card that doesn't use the exFAT file system isn't considered a SDXC card anymore. Based on that I'd guess that 128GB SDXC cards will also work when reformatted to FAT32 in the MMI as well.
There may be some valid concern that the File Allocation Table will grow too large in size for the OS in the MMI to handle at some point. However, there's no mention of a max size for a USB mass storage device so maybe it can handle the FAT of a 2TB FAT32 partition.

The cards are Patriot EP Series SDXC 64GB cards. Like I said previously, the MMI could not read them until I reformatted them to FAT32.I ordered a single 64GB Sandisk Ultra SDXC card (http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory-cards/sd/ultra-uhs-1-class10-30mbs/?capacity=64GB) to play with. It's rated for -25C to 85C operation which seemed like a useful feature in a car.

Thanks for the info on it, I'm happy to hear larger cards will work. I was still content with 32GB cards since those will also hold a lot of music. I haven't yet tried to play a video file but for fun I'll give it a try. Also thanks for reminding me about the sig. I thought I had updated it already, but that must have been on AW. :-)

I received my 64GB Sandisk SDXC card today. I reformatted it to FAT32. I don't know why it's there, but I left the empty 16MB blank space before the partition at the start of the drive. I'm in the process of copying 60GB of files to it now so I can test it in the S4.
Interestingly, a Lexar SDHC reader I have (came free with a SDHC card a few years back) didn't work with it even though I had the exFAT patch installed on my Windows XP system. It worked fine in 2 other SDHC readers I have.

For you 2013 MY (MMI3G+) owners, if you have a chance could you tell me what the manual says as far as the oldest generation iPod that will still work with it? For MMI3G (2009-2012 MY) you can go as old as an iPod 4G and it will work. I'm curious if that will still work on the 2013 MMI.

Apparently you are unaware that forum members are prohibited from reading the owner's manual. Not reading the manual allows us to ask questions for the bazillionth time that have already been answered in detail on the forum, and makes operating the car more of a religious and mystical experience, whereby we are constantly surprised and amazed at the car's capabilities. "Hey guys, check this out, when some guy in a truck with bright headlights comes up behind me the mirrors somehow know he is there and...wait.....you're not gonna believe this......they actually get darker. It's like some sort of magic or something. How do it know??" Please don't read your manual any further, it will only dull your ownership experience. By the way, have you figured out what the proper tire inflation pressures are?

Thanks for this, I think this may be the problem with the USB hard drive I bought and the AMI USB cable. MMI says the drive or cable is not supported. Could this be because I have too many files? Or is that notification indicitive of an incompatible hard drive? I got a WD Passport 1TB which is USB 3.0 (backwards compatible of course)

Just wanted to resurrect this thread as I too used this program. It's much faster then using command line from the windows command prompt. I tried and it took over 15 min to format a 64GB card. This took seconds. Also, as I understand it a 128GB card should work as well as long as you're formatting to FAT32. I'm going to try a USB hard drive next as Audi sells a 500GB one but I think I'll just pick up one of my own and see how that goes in comparison to the cards as far as read speads, etc. Anyone have any experience they can share?

Formatted a 1 TB Western Digital My Passport (USB 3.0 !) with FAT32 and it plays smoothly in my 2010 AMI / MMI 3G Plus !
Eventhough it is written that the AMI does only support 500mA, the USB 3.0 (with specs of 900 mA) HD works perfectly ...... with the only (MMI) restriction of 4000 tracks max. :-(
I also tried a 128GB Sandisk SDXC (FAT32 formatted) and that worked also perfectly .... of course also with the 4000 tracks limitation
Now it is time to retrofit the 3G plus to a 3G+ [wrench]

The new 2013 model doesn't have the same 4000 track capacity limit does it? I thought I've heard that the new MMI will go higher. Still haven't had a chance to try this but I do have a spare 128GB SSD that I am thinking of putting in a small chassis and see if it performs any better than the regular 5200rpm smaller passport drives. Anyone notice any lag in reading the drive, say when you start up the car, etc?

Hi, Sorry for resurrecting such an old post, but I've looked high and low everywhere and can't find an answer. This post is the closest thing but does not have an answer in it.
I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I have over 12,000 songs (79GB) on a 128GB SDXC card. They all load, play and show album art. When I go to import however, I can see the contents of the first 3-4 directories in the D's but the rest give a message that there are no playable files in that directory. Copying those directories to a different SD card lets me see and import them into the JukeBox.
Has anyone figured out what is going on with this?

Gang,
Since I bought my S4 (2015, Prestige, B&O System) I've been working though all the different ways to play music in the car. I'm going to leave out AM/FM/Sirius since those are pretty self explanatory. I'm also going to be discussing this within the context of iPhone. I don't have an Android device.
Bluetooth - I'll call this one "limited functionality." Yes, you can stream Bluetooth to the MMI, but there's no way to navigate through your albums, artists and playlists via the MMI. You have to pick the phone up and manage it from there. Bluetooth works fine for Pandora, Spotify, etc. but all of the control and management is through the phone.
MMI Connect App - This is the app you install on your phone and it streams to the MMI over WiFi. This is nearly full featured. You can navigate everything from the MMI and it will display album artwork. Limitations: The MMI will not display the "album flip book" thing and you cannot use voice control. I find myself using this one mostly since it lets me keep all of my music in ONE place. I don't have to copy it to SD cards or the Jukebox and keep everything in sync. The album flip book and voice control are cool but not that big of a deal.
SD Cards - These get around the 3000 song limit of the Jukebox. They do display album artwork but again, no "album flip book" and no voice control. And now you have your music it two places and there's the manual maintenance associated with that.
Jukebox - Supports album artwork, "flip book" and voice control but it has a hard limit of 3000 songs. This sounds like a lot until you start having to cull out to keep under the limit. The jukebox also has the same maintenance problem with your music database being in more than one location. I've tried to find out why Audi has a 3000 song limit but there's precious little information on it. I suspect it's because moving music to the Jukebox is painfully slow.
AMI - Audi Music Interface. This is the cable connection in the glovebox. I don't have direct experience with this since the cable is like $80 and I wasn't willing to pay that just to experiment. I'm basing this on what I've read and what I've understood based on talking to people that have the cable and use it. That said: The AMI is full featured. You will get around the 3000 song limit, it will display album artwork, the "flip book" and voice control is available.
However, the AMI has some limitations. The cable connection is in the glovebox which means it's impractical to use it with your phone. I'd love to go this route because it would charge my phone and play my entire catalog along with all the other nifty features. But now I have to open the glove box, plug in the phone and leave it in there while I'm driving somewhere. No. Nobody is going to do that more than two or three times. I could potentially buy a lightning cable extension but now I have this ghetto cable stringing out of my glovebox and across my console. Perhaps I could find a way to snake it around so it comes out between the drivers seat and the console?
As it is, the only real way to use this is to buy an iPod and dedicate it to the car. Now this really isn't all that bad. iTunes makes it pretty easy to keep everything in sync. I'd have to bring the "S4 iPod" in every now and then to update it with new music and playlists but again, that really isn't so bad.
So at this point I'm almost exclusively using the MMI Connect app but I'm considering getting the AMI Lightning cable and using an iPod. I'd love to hear from someone here who's doing that before I go buy the cable.
Thanks!
-Charles

I'm curious about the MMI Connect app you mentioned. Will have to look into that further. One other thing to add not music related is if you pair your iPhone to MMI/Nav you can save destinations via google maps and have it pushed as a destination on the MMI (I find this faster than fumbling with inputting info).

FWIW, I'm still running 8.1.3 on my personal iPhone 6. Actually used my work iPhone 6 as a canary/mule to test and see if iOS 9 was stable enough. With that being said, I have been running the latest iOS 9.2 on my work iPhone 6 and have had no issues thus far (stable build for now). When I upgraded from 8.1.xx to 9 and 9.1 I did notice some lag and a slight reduction in battery life but has since been mitigated by upgrading to 9.2 and optimizing settings i.e location services, disable wifi assist, etc

OK, so I've been playing around with this for an hour or so. It works.... but only from the PC's browser! There is NO SUPPORT for this in the Google Maps app for iOS. Google wants you to navigate using their app if you're in your car. This severely limits the functionality of this for me.
Fortunately, this does work with the MMI Connect App. Go to myAudi Destinations, search for a destination and there's a prompt there for "Send to Car." From there, it'll show up in the MMI under "Online Destinations."

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, it does work on my iPhone 6 with iOS 9.2 because I deleted the google maps and I'm using Waze in it's place. So when I open google maps via safari (utilizing desktop mode) the menu/drop down to send to phone-> car is there for me.
I need to mess around the mmi connect app some more. Not a fan that it requests location services to "Always" and does not have option for "While Using" -- possible battery drainer here if always on. Also, the good thing about the google maps sending to myAudi, is it stores it on myAudi and AudiConnect 3G in my car downloads the lists of online destinations, which then show up on my MMI/NAV. Not sure if MMI connect app has to be connected via wifi / bluetooth i.e a phone to car connection is needed in order for the send to car to work.

Yes. That's the workaround to persuade Google Maps to enable the "Send to Car" functionality. You can also use the Atomic web browser for iOS to do the same thing.

OK, this I do have a lot of experience using. The MMI Connect app does require Always on Location Services, but it has not been a problem for battery drain so far. As soon as I put it in the background, it drops the GPS. And while in the background it will continue to stream music over WiFi out of your iTunes playlist.
Both the MMI Connect app and Google Maps app send destinations via your myAudi account. It's identical. It sends that up to the web via 3G and then the car picks it up via AudiConnect. I do not believe MMI Connect uses Bluetooth at all. All the work I've done with it indicates it's WiFi for music streaming, 3G for everything else.
So at the end of the day here, I'm still leaning towards just using MMI Connect. The "MyAudi Destinations" in the app IS Google Maps. It says so right on the screen. So all I have to do is find a destination there, and tap "Send." From there, it shoots it right up to my mayAudi account where I can then find it in the MMI under "Online Destinations." I can edit/delete destinations from the MMI Connect app as well. It appears to me that the developers were simply working around the limitation imposed by Google Maps native.

I was struggling on getting a 128GB SD Card working in my 2015 S4.
I read that you need to format it to Fat 32 first. This little program did it as Windows 10 will not:
