With a heavy coat of Rustoleum clear lacquer - the plate frame comes in a really cheap looking matte material. The gloss finish I gave it makes it look a ton nicer...

I run with a simple black painted metal frame, no lettering. If I didn't have this one, the black "Truth in Engineering" one above looks pretty nice too.

Whatever dealer plate is on the car when I get them, I turn it around and so that the license plate just has a thin black frame around it. Looks clean and finished. That's on the back at least. For my front I have one of the retractable plates so I can just display the plate when I'm parked etc
