View Full Version : Engine continues to rev between shifts

When I shift my 5 speed manual 2002 Audi A4 1.8t it will continue to rev between shifts as if though my foot is still pressed down on the gas (of course it is not).
Any ideas about this? Could it be engine, ECU or manual transmission?
FYI, I did the battery pull to reset the ECU and no changes.

The clutch pedal has two switches. One at the bottom of travel (must be activated to start the car) and one at the top of the travel. If the upper travel switch isn't working properly the RPM's will hang when you depress the clutch. Normally when you push in the clutch the upper switch will disengage the cruise control (if activated) and shut down the throttle body to an idle position so you can shift easily. If the switch isn't working properly the ECM assumes that you are just letting off of the gas pedal and cruising. Consequently the gas pedal stays partially open. The switch is either broken or out of adjustment.

Great answer! Do you happen to know the part number?
If not, I will try to call the parts department and describe this.

I'm pretty sure it's this one, but you can call your dealer with your VIN number to confirm: Clicky click (http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/ES248758/ES248758/). There seems to be a little misinformation in the ECS description. The upper switch controls the cruise control cut off and rev level. The lower switch is tied into the ignition.

I found this one http://www.europaparts.com/clutch-pedal-switch-7h0927189.html when I searched google but will purchase the one through ECS since you recommended that part and they have great customer service.
Replacing these is easy, just want to make sure I buy the right part.
Thanks for your help!

I think the one in the europaparts is for the lower switch. I would encourage you to check against your VIN number before ordering as there have been several different switches used over the life of the B6.

Over the past few weeks I thought I noticed my RPMs "hanging" after I push in the clutch to shift...the higher the RPMs are when I shift the more noticeable it is (even reving up a hair)...BUT my cruise control has no issues whatsoever...could this switch still be my problem?
My wife has been driving my car a lot so I thought maybe she was just wearing my clutch and this was a sign of a worn clutch, but after doing some searching I'm wondering if this is my problem...the clutch has never slipped the least, but it hasn't seemed very smooth in and out of shifts lately either...
Found the switch here for $17:

I believe that is the correct switch. but be sure to check the part numbers on your current switch for verification. Different switches have been used over the life of the B6.
