ECS tuning or REVO chip upgrades are the best bang for the buck. Nothing will give you more of a gain out of the box

Well this thread was started about 3 weeks ago, but I figured I'd chime in :) You said that you have a FWD automatic - which means that you also have a CVT transmission like mine.. You probably have already read about the CVT transmission elsewhere on the forums, but they're not exactly the most reliable. I personally do not mind it and I enjoy the way that it drives, however I am preparing for the day that it ends up giving out and I'll have to do a 6MT swap. I was also new to the whole 'upgrading' aspect of it because my previous A4 B6 was a 3.0L and there wasn't much you could do in the lines of Forced Induction.

But I went ahead and got a stage 1 Revo tune done within the first week of getting the car. I personally love the difference it made.. But being that CVT automatic transmissions aren't exactly the most reliable, you probably don't want to be putting extra stress on it. There's a thread somewhere in the B6 section where someone was having a problem with their CVT, and we got on the topic of modifications to cars with these transmissions and maintaining them. I believe the thread is titled "Transmission Problems".. A few people have chimed in with their opinions on modding FWD Audis with CVTs. Definitely worth checking out.

I for one couldn't just leave the car bone stock, because that's what I had to do with my 3.0L B6 A4.. But it's definitely smart to stay away from heavily modifying Audi's with transmissions like ours. Good luck with your upgrade venture and with the car! [up]

I agree with Revo chip. My wife has a '99.5 and I just chipped it last year, I should've done it a looooong time ago, makes the car much more driveable. As for the tranny, when did they start using a CVT?

I'm almost positive they used CVTs on B5's as well. They're only available on FWD Audi's. Right now I'm at 40k miles and I personally love the smoothness of it. I'll probably be cursing it down the line, but for now I'm content with it!

Nope. B5 used the good ole 5 speed tip. The cvts started in 2002 on all models. A6,A4...

My a6 got the last decent fwd tranny. But even then it's FWD :/
