View Full Version : Burnt out LCD screen/pixels solution - Swap in a 1998-1999.5 cluster?

So I'm starting to get sick of looking at an LCD screen that I can barely read, nor do I want to fix the LCD screen if it's just going to start going bad in the next 50,000 miles; so i've been thinking - maybe it would be worth swapping in a 1998-1999.5 cluster that DOESN'T have an LCD screen? it looks EXACTLY the same, except everything on the cluster is lit up in red(instead of being red and white) and it has an analog clock instead(irrelevant imo).

So what do you guys think? Will a new 2001 OEM Audi cluster just go bad again in 50,000 miles? Does the older style look better (in your opinion, since it's all red, rather than red/white numbers)?

here's what the two different clusters look like:

Wheres K0mpresd? looks like he has some business coming his way.. just have him replace the screen in your cluster, and when you get the new one turn it off with the stalk when your not looking at the temp or mpg..

Probably just because it's the one I have, but I prefer the analog clock in my 99.

I couldn't live with a busted LCD, it drives me crazy enough when my radio has an orphan pixel on when it's really cold.

Yeah, K0mpresd Does an outstanding job on these for next to nothing... Reminds me I have to send my other one in to him.

I'm pretty sure you can't swap the earlier clusters with the new ones. As far as I knew, the analog clock was not irrelevant. That actually denotes whether the cluster is CAN bus or not. Or something like that. I'm pretty sure you specifically can't swap an analog clock cluster with a digital clock cluster or vice-versa. Best bet is to send to k0mpresd. I need to do that too.

it sounds cheaper than getting a whole new cluster, so i think i might have to [up]

woops.. didn't even notice that.
