Well i just went out to take more pictures since i havnt in probable a year or so, not that the car has changed a whole lot but it was time to get some more.. i could have sworn i made a timeline thread on the zine, but apparently not. I know i have one on vortex and AF but the zine deserves one. Comments and criticism are more than welcome [up]

Cant even remember now when i bought the car, spring/summer of '08 maybe? anyways.. 1999 black on black leatherette, cold weather package and sport package, 5speed 1.8T.. was owned by a buddy of mine who just wanted something cheaper to own/maintain and i had been a forum lurker forever, and i had to pick her up.. bought the car for $5,500 then and it had 115k miles on the clock.. no mods done whatsoever.. tiny ass low pros on the swings, mudflaps, and a little bit dirty haha.. how she looked the first day home..

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_00031.jpg

cleaned her up a little bit, debadged it and took the mudflaps off.. early stages of ownership are so great haha

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0093.jpg

This is where it becomes a blur of mods...

-Hardwired iPod to glovebox w/ oem stereo controls
-Forge 007 DV
-K&N 57i
-Ebay Short Shifter
-AWE Vent Boost gauge
-Interior LEDs
-Plate light LEDs

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0467.jpg

I think that was roughly the first go around.. then came the wheels

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0124.jpg

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0589.jpg

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0120.jpg

After the wheels i went with a Borla 2.25" cat back from AWE.. and eventually a 2.5" VMR test pipe.. finally got it tuned from APR with the AEB 91 program.. also added an APR turbo inlet pipe..

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/IMG_0554.jpg

Hooked her up with some Depo 2 piece projectors and a 6000k DDM HID kit..

Through all this time, ive hit 2 deer and an owl... the car was totalled but i bought it back and fixed it for a good price and it was just like before, all cosmetic damage pretty much to the hood and fender.. power steering resevoir got taken out.. headlight and grille all got hammered.. no pics of the accident i guess but.. moving on!

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_0587.jpg

that abouuuuttt brings us to now... she went through the original K03 on me with a garbage flapper and plenty of shaft play way back in the day, swapped it out with a K03s with about 50k miles on it in great shape.. that made me much happier having a turbo that sounded/boosted like it should. 18psi all day and runs like a champ.. threw on the A8/TT front brakes with some good ollddd rusty ass calipers haha, its on my list to get them cleaned up and painted (thinking of going with gold or silver.. cant bring myself to do red, every honda/neon around this place has red calipers and rear drums haha cant stand it) also added a southbend stage 2 clutch, LED reverse lights.. yada yada... full list of mods at bottom

http://i524.photobucket.com/albums/cc324/osin34/1999%20Audi%20A4/IMG_1940.jpg

from the second deer (it was a little skipper) my hood is kinda out of alignment and it does irritate me but just havnt gone in to get it all fixed.. shes got some rust that wants to come through on the rear drivers 1/4.. its not in immaculate condition by any means on the exterior but i clean/wax regularly and the interior, other than the typical drivers side rip is immaculate.. Stratmosphere floor mats (black/black) keep things clean and thats about it! Picked up a Votex rack from member Pearlescent on here just a few weeks ago, told him id get him some pics so here they are brother! This is how the car sits as we speak.. im no photographer, at alllll, and hope to get some cool pics of the car sometime but they will work.. sorry that the car is dirty, washed it and its rained the past few days nonstop here so.. it is what it is haha

Sorry for the plates but.. i dont have photoshop and doing it in Paint and resaving all the pics is a real pain in the johnson..

Full mod list to date; Id list all maintenance stuff ive done, but the bag of receipts is waayyyyy too fat, and full of everything everyone else has gone through as well, so pretty pointless:

Future:

Plan on refinishing the OEM 16" swings (which are my winter wheels) with all new centercaps and in Bronze.. havnt seen pictures of these on a black car in bronze but i think it would look pretty sick.. also looking to probably do 20%-30% tint.. havnt done suspension work

Thanks for looking guys, and ill be adding probably as more time goes on.. thinking about going Frankenturbo in the future, big turbo would be fun, i just dont know if it will happen on this car. If i end up with the B6 S4 like im planning, this will move to winter status, and i think that would be a fun little winter banger :)

hahah thanks a lot man, really appreciate it. Yea after the first deer that totaled it, i was going through all the options and the insurance company was dead set on totaling it, and i just thought about it and was like ok, there was no engine damage or major damage really, and to just throw away the car and all the parts and stuff to start from scratch again was not in the cards for me. I love this car, and as many times as its made me cringe or want something else i just cant get rid of it haha, too much time and love and it runs way too good. i got rear ended by a kid a few years back and it gouged the shit out of my rear bumper (visible in one of the pics i posted i think of the exhaust) and his insurance guy wrote me a check for a new bumper and work and he was like i wouldnt even fix it if it was me, and i was like well, i cant stand to look at the bumper like that, its getting fixed... haha to each their own..

but again thanks. I havnt shared my car too much on the forums really and its cool to get feedback from all the other enthusiasts..

Looks good. Any suspension mods planned for the future?

thanks man.. ive tossed around the idea back and forth so many times and with so many combinations it makes my head spin.. Vermont is tough obviously because of the winters, and the roads in town and on the mountain are just that.. dirt, rough, potholes.. and in the city there are alot of high pitched turn ins to stores/businesses/banks etc.. everyone has to deal with this stuff though no matter where you live and people go ahead and drop it down anyway.. i dont wanna be going through oil pans and my flex pipe has already taken a beating even just being on the OEM sport suspension.. all that being said

i definatley want to do sway bars either way..

but ive thought about H&R on the OEM sport struts... afraid that the race springs will just plain old be too low, and obviously are gunna put the struts through the ringer and ill have to end up replacing them.. 160k miles on these ones and they ride wonderful as it sits..

thought about doing a Bilstein/H&R setup either used lightly or new...

and thought about going with ST's.. if taken care of properly after install, hopefully they wouldnt get frozen on me so i couldnt raise and lower them..

the look of a drop is just what sets the car off completley for me, and its the one thing i havnt tackled.. love the stance on your car BTW

Thanks!

Suspension mods are very fun, and many opt to do that before anything. But H-Sport sway bars will totally change the drive of your vehicle. And if you want to keep it high for the reasons you just listed, then upgraded stiffer sports springs on stock sport struts would be the cheapest route. But like most, you might end up regretting not getting coilovers from the beginning.

osin34
05-09-2012, 05:11 PM
Yea, i mean honestly as funny as it is, suspension was the first thing from the get go i wanted to do. But i always told myself well, its not super practical to be doing that shit first.. so i just went on without it for the past ~4 years.. but now that ive covered pretty much all the other major areas to a point where im happy with the car (even though i just like... am dying for more power haha) im starting to think about it more.

Those H-sports are pretty pricey if i remember correctly? The H&Rs and Neuspeeds i feel like are half the cost, but then again there must be a reason why.. i know both of those companies make quality parts but, any idea?

having been on the sport suspension for so long, going to coils would be a drastic difference. Between the stiffness increase in the springs/struts to the cornering and height and the feel of the center of gravity dropping, i know id be in love with the look, but im worried i wouldnt be as happy with the ride. I cant lie, my car rides so well right now id hate to sacrifice that for the look, but thats the trade off. From what ive read, the sport springs from H&R wont provide much of a drop at all over the OEM sport.. maybe .5"-.75" if that?

I love my Bilstein struts and H&R Sport Springs. In right around 25" gtf and it really makes a difference in how the car looks. Anti-roll bars are my next upgrade. I need them now that the car sees regular autocross events and a few track days.

osin34
05-09-2012, 05:20 PM
i just went outside and measured my GTF cause i never have.. car isnt on exactly super level ground but close enough id say

~26" front GTF
~25.75" rear GTF

sounds like i was wrong and those sports will give me around an extra inch once they settle?

Having personally done H&R sport springs on OEM sport shocks (which is how my car sits right now), I would not recommend it. I am a *complete* cheapskate, always trying to find the cheap way out that is only borderline janky. Coming from 150k miles non-sport equipment, I found the cheap way to be used, low-mile OEM sport shocks and lightly used H&R sport springs. Entire package cost $250 (bought separately all here on the 'zine). I found out the following (all IMHO, of course):

- Yes it rides better than stock. The steering wheel now works properly, the car responds to driver inputs like it should. Quick highway lane changes are quite fun. But...
- The damping provided by the OEM sports is *barely* adequate for the stiffer springs. Large, or repetitive bumps throw it for a loop. Car feels uneasy on wavy road surfaces above 60mph.
- The suspension feels "messed with". The damping and spring rate just isn't matched very well and it shows.
- Stance is not acceptable. Drop in the rear is cash money: 1 finger gap. Drop in front, not so much: 3 fingers. Reverse Rake for the lose.
- Other people say the drop on their H&R sports is perfect. Must be luck of the draw.

So what did I do? After almost doing another cheap fix (used Bilsteins for the front only and an ECS front coilover add-on kit - I told you: I am a chronic cheapskate) I drove my butt to Waterfest and bought a set of ST coils for $699. They are sitting in my bedroom and will go on in a week or 2.

So my recommendation is this: If you don't want to spend a couple hundred bucks, keep your OEM sport stuff and spend some money on sway bars or something. If you want to go low and you care about handling, get some springs upgraded shocks too. In that case I'd probably suggest you splurge just a tiny bit extra and get some decent coilovers. I can't offer an opinion of my ST coils yet, other than "they look shiny!". Hopefully I'll have a glowing review in a few weeks.

osin34
05-09-2012, 05:48 PM
hahahaha i really appreciate the honesty, and i know that as you said it CAN be luck of the draw.. key word CAN.. Obviously spending $220 bucks on springs just to throw them on and be dissapointed with the outcome will be a headache and it wont be what i want.. i dont track the car, or autoX or anything of the sort.. but to have the look that you stand back and go "damn... that looks so sick" you probably need to go coils, get them dialed in, and roll with it. my concern again is that the ride is gunna be stiffer to the point where the handling and looks dont outweigh the ride.. but then again, i wouldnt want a real big drop.. i would think 1.5" tops would be plenty for my taste, and at that point, maybe the ride on coils wouldnt very rough at all? ill certainly be awaiting your input on the STs.. ive read so many reviews on every setup possible on all the forums and its just hard to know truly without going through it yourself. i certainly think maybe ill start with sways and we can go from there, at least that way i know ill be making an improvement that ill be happy with regardless haha, thanks so much again for that opinion on the setup.. i dont consider myself a cheapskate but i like to spend wisely.. im not made of money (like mostly all of us haha) so i like to have a definitive "in the know" if im gunna spend like $300 plus...

The center vents are usually targeted for their space to place gauges.

walky_talky20
05-09-2012, 09:10 PM
My oil pressure gauge is in the far left vent.

It makes sense because it near the oil temp gauge, and the 2 gauges correlate a bit (temp affects pressure). If I was to do it again, I would make sure I had a switch to shut it off. The backlight at night can be too much at times. And it reflects on the side window as well. I like the location, I just wish it had a switch. I'll be adding it in the future. I want some individual switches to shut down oil, boost, and CarPC LCD. And a master switch to shut them all down for "night mode", like a SAAB.

yea i have my boost gauge in my left center vent, i was just thinking if i put in an oil pressure gauge, i would go with the far left drivers vent just cause that way there is a gauge on either side of the steering column, which i thought would look sharp but walky brings up a good point with the reflection in the window at night, something i never would have thought of.

so OP how do you like your 57i? what are the details on ur ipod integration and the heat shield? im looking to do these two things soon

I li ke the 57i, i mean it gives a great sound and adds to the whole setup. I was kinda cleaning my engine bay last night and only just realized the tab on the MAF sensor housing that the bracket they provide attatches to, had snapped so my TIP is just free floating with no support now. Just gunna take it apart when i clean my filter and glue that mother back together.. My iPod integration i got through crutchfield as like my very first mod to my car.. my car has the full bose system with amp and 6 disc, cept the 6 disc changer wasnt in the car when i bought it.. my friend who i bought the car from had some harmon kardon little shifter knob lookin setup with music, dunno what it was.. but anyway, got it thru crutchfield i believe it was a "Spec" setup for Audi's and VWs? was around 150 bucks shipped, and you take out the factory stereo, and the first connector plugs into the back of the stereo where the 6 disc cable would have, and then there is a little converter box with 3 settings on it, which you are supposed to be able to set it on "hybrid" mode which allows use of either the stereo controls OR the full use of the iPod so a passenger or yourself can take it out and flip through and change songs. HOWEVER, my generation ipod (not sure which one, color screen and is like a 60gig) doesnt work with the hybrid setting, so i can only use it through the stereo which really is fine with me.. DISC 1-6 correlates to your playlists you have on your ipod, and then you hit the RW of FF buttons to switch track, if you hold them down you can rewind and fast forward through songs.. and of course the RANDOM button is great, i just throw it on random and let it play through whatever.. works great, love it..

as far as the heatshield its honetly far less superior than like, just about any hommade jobs ive seen on the forums haha. My parents used to own a 98 cherokee sport, and it had a piece of heatshield that came loose off the bottom above the CAT and it was big and square, so i took that and kinda cut it to fit between the top end and the intake.. combined along with the little factory piece of thin metal "heatshield", ziptied the piss out of it, and voila. Ive wanted to replace it with something like the Blinktek ones, and there was a member on the AF forums who was gunna continue making them pretty much blinktek copies but i havnt heard from him in a long time. maybe ill try and dig him up and see if hes still doing it.

I believe I bought 4, 4, 2. The color is called Metallic Bronze and I'm not sure what brand they were. I do remember going to every advanced auto, pepboys and home depot in the area with no success. I finally found the paint at Wal-mart, of all places.

To do it right, you should buy 2 cans. You might have a little left but why hold back over $5.

guess i might have to take a look at walmart haha, never would have thought to go there.. the murder mart here is pretty small so who knows.. so 4 coats of primer you could get all 4 wheels off of two cans? and 4 coats of bronze on all 4 wheels with two cans? awesome, well worth the cashola
