Nope the ECU just needs to be out of a car that is the same the engine code. For instance ECU's out of a 97-99.5 AEB 1.8T's are interchangeable regardless of of ECU number.

You cannot swap a 97-99.5 ECU say into a 2000 or 2001 and vise versa.

Worst case senario if it's a compatable ECU sometimes the softcoding needs to be changed with a VAG-COM .

thats is good for the non-DBW's yes. Slightly different results with dbw's (especially 2000 models - can't even change softcode between 2000's)

Let me know if you really want to do this. I have a factory ECU from my 1999 Audi A4 1.8T, FWD, 5spd that I am wanting to get chipped. (AEB engine code) My car should be in the garage for the next week to 2 weeks. So if you need the chip before you ship yours let me know.

Okay... i know it's an older post, but can someone explain softcoding? (My friend has a VAG-COm)

FYI, i have a 557 p ecu with APR, that i'm selling to get a 557 N ECU with pc-16 for a k04 upgrade. - shouldn't be any problems with this set up right?

dual, my ecu is 558M 97 audi. Just want to play it safe, is it compatible with the 557p out of a 99.5?

Ah, yeah... sorry I'm switching over to Creechsa4's 558M pc-16 ECU...

so question still remains... what do you mean by soft-coding... and would i have any issues with the ecu swap...

no, you shouldnt have any issues...

softcoding, you open up the engine module in vag com, go to recode, and then change the soft coding number to the correct # for transmission and drivetrain...
