Hi all,

There's a noise coming from the front part of the engine (timing belt area) of my car 98 Audi A4 1.8t. You can hear the noise in the below video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iAH0xOFs1U

Two weeks ago I took the car to my mechanic for this issue and he said it was a worn out accessory belt tensioner. So he replaced both accessory belt tensioner and belt with a new one. After that this noise was not there till yesterday. Now I am getting the same noise which was there before. The noise will not come all the time, but it occurs randomly, like twice in a week kind of..

Timing belt and all idlers were replaced 40k miles ago. Also A/C belt tensioner was replaced 12k miles ago.

If anybody knows what this sound about, please reply..

I'd squirt some lubricating oil (WD-40, liquid wrech, white grease ect) on the pulleys and see if you can track it down. If you find nothing I'd check the fan clutch.

If it's the fan clutch, do I need to replace it soon? Are there any other mechanical/ visual symptoms to track the fan clutch?

As I said before, the noise is coming only once in a while. It came yesterday, but today I checked for the sound at least 10 different times, but it never came..

If its the fan clutch, replace it with an EFK and not have to worry about it ever again. And yes, you should replace it before it explodes and sends shrapnel throughout your engine bay.

EFK? How about Sachs fan clutch at ECS tuning? Is this radiator fan bearing a part of the fan clutch below? I assume it is..:) Or do I need to buy it separate?

Is this the fan clutch bearing?

Also, I won't be able to fix this in next two weeks. And I have to go daily 60 miles on highway to get to the work. Will it be safe for next two weeks?

That piece replaces everything in the fan clutch.

No, that's not correct. It's just the radiator fan clutch without the bearing and the clip.

The bearing and the associated ring are listed here;

I should have clarified in my last post, an EFK is an electric fan kit. It isn't worth the money and headache to replace the old belt driven fan to have it wear on your engine and go bad again later down the road. In short, get an EFK and not worry about the old fan setup.

My mistake I thought you meant the bearing in the clutch itself. The kit doesn't come with the one you linked.

I checked the fan clutch today morning before starting the engine. From my understanding, fan clutch should spin freely when engine is cold (correct me if i'm wrong). But there was a counter resistance while turning the fan blades with my finger. Below is a video of what I did today;

Do you think this is normal for a fan clutch?

yes thats normal.

hmm...So that means my fan clutch is good. Right?

Also, there is no play/ squealing noise when I turn the fan clutch with hand. So I am assuming the bearing is also fine.

Is there any other way to check a bad fan clutch bearing?

It turned out to be the fan clutch and bearing.

Car was running with a 14 yr old OEM fan clutch and bearing at 225k miles:) No wonder it went out..

Also, ECS and Germanautoparts said Sachs is the OE supplier of fan clutch to audi. But it is not true, BEHR is the OE audi fan clutch as you can see below...I replaced mine with Sachs though..

Below are some pictures of the old ones;
