Hey Guys,

I've been reading up on the audio setups in the Audi's and I'm utterly lost and confused, to say the least. All this talk about 2ohm vs 4ohm speakers + amplifer for 4ohm speakers in audi's plus the rear stock amp and what not are confusing the hell out of me.

This is what I want simple and clean:
1- I have the 1999 Audi OE Concert Setup
2- My passenger front is blown
3- there is NO sound from the rear speakers at all (is it my amp or what's going on?!)
4- what speakers should I order for the front so they sound decent without too much money (I want to keep it 2ohm with the stock headunit as I dont want to hassle with aftermarket headunit/speaker&amp setups)
5- how should I go about diagnosing my rear speakers

This is in an avant so the rear speakers are not on the rear deck! But please help, I've googled and searched AZ and it only made me more confused.

I would just replace them with factory units if your not an avid music listener or audiophile.

My rear speakers weren't working so I took a couple minutes to check them out see what was wrong. The cage that protects the amp (I think) was hit by something at some point and was hanging by a wire. One of the wires was disconnected. I removed it from the rear deck and soldered it back and voila. Rear speakers again and much louder fronts. Must've been the amp.

Just take some time to check out the rear speakers. I'm sure you'll see something wrong.

1. replace front speakers with what ever brand you want but match the ohm rating with your head unit.
2. inspect the amp that is hooked up to the subwoofer behind the left panel in the very rear of the avant. you have a voltmeter? start poking at it there is a wiring diagram should help you out a bit.(its a pain to get back there and easy to break clips so be careful)
If you need another amp lmk I have one that I just removed from my avant and it is still working as far as I know.(pay for shipping and its yours)

I think that only the Bose system has the amp behind the rear panel. The only "amp" that concerts have is the one on the rear speaker but its more of a resistor than an amp.

Also thanks for the wiring diagram I needed one [:)]

So that being said, the previous owner mentioned that also, can I just grab any rear speaker from an A4 concert setup?

I know that there was quite a few audio options for the a4 but I think that if you just bought the driver side rear deck speaker that would fix it. They should all be about the same if not identical.

Just as a precaution I would check the resistence in the wires leading to the rear speaker and make sure it isn't shorted or something stupid like that.

Do all Symphony stereos (2001) have an amp? If so, where is it located on an Avant? If not, is there a connection available in the car that I can add an amp?

geeky, glad you picked up an Avant!

For my fronts I picked up some Infinity Reference 4032cf 4-Inch ($64 @ Amazon). Since the Bose speakers are mounted by three screws, it requires some modification to trim and install these Infinity speakers on the Bose mounting bracket.

I believe the rear speakers on the Avant are powered the Bass Box in the left rear of the car (where the CD Changer does). If you want to replace the rears, go with the Infinity Reference 5032cf 5.25-Inch. Again requires some modification to the mounting bracket to fit.

I dont have a bose system so if it's a bose amp, it's all yours.

@Otta, thanks man! Took a while to find an avant 1.8TQM but I finally got one :P as for the rear speakers are you talking about the Bose system or the concert system?

When you turn on the concert radio, does it say "BOSE"? That will tell you cause I have a Concert headunit on my avant.

Those Infinity speakers are good for the Bose units cause of the 2ohm impedance. If you have a non-Bose system, your free to use what ever for speakers.

Now Im even more confused. Is the 2ohm impedence speakers meant for the Bose system or the non-Bose system?

Bose = 2ohm. Non-bose = 4ohm.

Bose = 2ohm. Non-bose = 4ohm.

been thinking it was the other way this entire time. now that that is cleared up, which speakers are you guys running specifically? I'm not audiophile but I do like listening to clear music especially on drives. Ultimately I'd like to replace my tweeters, fronts, and rears with anything that'll sound decent while running the stock gauge wiring/headunit/amp setup. If I need to get a new amp for the rears, that's fine but Im not trying to spend a fortune on the setup, just 2-300.

My car

2001 audi a4 avant with sports cloth interior esp and concert stereo

That wiring diagram is for the avant non bose there is an amp its attached to the rear sub like i said i took all that stuff out I should know.
I think any concert speakers should work avant/sedan but if the circuit board amp attached to the subwoofer (like it shows in the wiring diagram) is not working then that would cause no sound from the rear speakers

You can use a 4ohm speaker for 2ohm amp but not recomended the other way around.

yeah I hear you. I just spent good money on replacing fronts, rears + sub and a 5 channel amp that I had a shop do which im kinda redoing..almost done (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/481469-b5-symphony-5-channel-amp-install) Ill post some pictures when im done. if you dont want to invest that much money just replace your four speakers with better quality aftermarket speakers just dont get really expensive ones because there is no point when you will be under powering them.

the only thing is you need to check that amp! and why your rear speakers dont work.

Exactly where do I find that in my Avant?

ElSnake

the amp is inside the subwoofer enclosure, and the sub is behind the rear drivers side panel.

What kind of am are you going to run? 2h? 4ch? 5ch? But you can hook up at the rear if you look at my the tread I posted you can see the questions I asked.

Can I replace the shitty rear sub with this?

is it going to be in the original sub enclosure? the Sub is 6" and on the back it says 2x3 ohms not sure what sub you can replace that with.

maybe you can replace it with a 6.5" sub keep it in the stock enclosure depending on the speakers enclosure specs.. im sure a small 6.5 cvt kicker sub will fit in the factory location, then tap into the preamp out to run a really small amp for your new sub. but then how are you going to power your rear speakers?

you really have to decide what you want to do. thats the hardest part. I have changed my mind so many times (ended up spending more money) so think it through.

there are also 4/3 channel amps you can use 1/2 to power your rear speakers. 3/4 bridged to power your sub... good luck.

geeky i hope you dont mind me asking on here while there are some guys who know audio. i also find myself confused with my 01 a4 Bose system.

can a aftermarket sub (like a 10" JL W6) be hooked up to the factory system?

someone offered to build me a fiberglass box in the rear left panel that holds my jack in the trunk.

Hey guys, I've posted this on another thread, but I kinda need the answer fast, so I'm posting this to every related topic...
Sooo, I got my hands on a A4 B5 avant symphony non-Bose sound system, 4 speakers + a woofer, and a pioneer head unit that I want to put in my Audi 100 C3...the wiring is my problem, since it's not a stock HU...I've connected the 4 speakers (w/ tweeters) on my pioneer @ home, and the sound is ok, but I also want my woofer to work...how can I get the signal for the amp from the Pioneer, and can someone help me on wiring, from the schematics I understand that the red is +12V, the brown is the ground, and the two pairs of twisted wires are the rear speaker outputs...so what are the two white wires for, how do they work, and how do I get the signal for the yellow and the purple wire?

Thanks in advance guys... [:)]
