My dilema, I already finished my Avant. K04 full setup, Giac, S4 Bumper and Skirts, etc. But there is a M3 owner wants to swap. The M is in very nice conditions. Conforti Stage 3 upgrade, full AA exhaust, H&R Coilovers, sway bars, full UUC stainless interior, very nice sound system and OZ Superleggeras 3pcs wheels. My Avant is my DD... Is a good deal?

Well that all is all up to you. RWD vs AWD. N/A vs FI. Personal preference of color: Black vs Red.

I would personally keep the A4 and lower it. You would find new love for it with a Elim kit.

How many miles on each?

Avant is Tip/M is Manual
Avant is 160K miles / M is 150K miles

No snow here. Avant is very rare here also.

IDK, I usually stay clear of BMW but since you can't enjoy the twisties with your Avant, I would honestly go M. Slightly less miles and manual is a big fun factor.

Personally, I would stick with the Audi A4 Avant 1,8T tip. It may well have 10k miles more than the BMW M3 E36, but that's not really an issue. E36 beemers are notorious for rust - front panel, front wheel arches, rear wheel arches, trunk (around the lock) top of windshield area and around the gas tank filler / flap.

Regular US-spec E36 M3 makes 243 hp, assuming the VANOS is working (most arent, expect around 190 hp if so). The E36 wasn't the best platform BMW used, a decent E30 325i M-Tech II Sport can out-handle an E36 M3 with stock suspension.

Lastly, when you're looking at an E36 M3, make sure it's what it's meant to be, an M3. Many stock E36 325i / 328i are dressed up as M3's. It's way too easy - used E36 M6 skirts, bumpers, mirrors and badges are pretty cheap, and even cheaper are replica parts. Many have been stung, and ended up with non-M3's, when that's what was advertised.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

your car looks far newer/cleaner than the M3 also..

throw an elim on yours and enjoy it for another 100k miles.

Have you driven the M? How is it?

I never has been a BMW fan. Unless is an M. This one is solid and is a real M3 (WBS vin). Is true, the avant looks newer everywhere than the M3. Inside and outside. Maybe I like it because the more power/manual mix. I was looking for a Porsche when the m3 owner pop ups. He just need space, and I love v6 power. But really dont know if commit.

I personally would not trade unless I was planning on throwing a turbo onto it. And I mean one to actually take advantage of the inline 6. Otherwise, stay with the A4. I have heard those cars are maintenance headaches, though. But coming from a B5 A4, how much worse can it really be. And as others have said, do some suspension mods. You would be surprised how much fun suspension mods can be. My coilovers with Hotchkis sway bars (makes huge difference) changed the entire drive of the vehicle.

Tough call. Both are awesome cars. Before I bought my Avant I drove BMWs for about 8 years. I had 3 e30s and an e34 5 speed 5 series. I personally think the A4 has more maintenance involved than BMWs but you know what you have done to your car.

I agree with seerlah on the suspension upgrade. I think it will be like a new car to you. I am about to do my suspension and can't wait to get the job done....time permitting.

I always did want an e36 M3. At least it is a good color if you do trade. Good luck with your decision. What is your heart telling you?

Keep the A4. It looks very clean, and definitely not as dated.

i'd keep the a4
amazing how dated the bmw looks in comparison

I'd swap. (if in good condition)

Test drive it. My b5 always felt "heavier" than any BMW I've driven. I'd almost say it feels closer to an e39 vs an e36 (feeling of weight, not actual weight). And there's actual torque at low rpm. And those engines seem to be boost friendly. Plenty of 500+whp m3s on stock internals.

The e36 does look older, b5 looks is more comparable to an e46. But it's still a coupe and those age better than 4door/wagon.

like Seerlah said. keep a4, suspension and sway bars is like driving a completely different car. you will fall in love all over again.

We are talking about 5 years. That's almost the average auto maker generation change. I know about the susp upgrade. That's my next upgrade on the list. Maybe that's what I'm tired of! Continue upgrading and this M3 is completed. I want it for a DD, so right now a turbo is not an option.

weigh the positives and negatives.
For me, I need space to haul things. Hockey, camping, the dog, etc...
I also prefer quattro being in Michigan with sketchy weather.
I prefer a forced induction vehicle vs. NA.
I would however prefer the manual over the auto
The E36 chassis is just as timeless as the B5.
The M is is easier to work on.

The A4 fits my lifestyle better, but the M would be my choice out of the two if I were living in PR.

Never see any Avants in PR...keep it!

Exactly. No snow here. But the avant is very rare here too. I almost do all A4 B5 DIY. I think that the M being N/A is easier to work on. What I like from the M is that all performance parts are there. And a lot of interior and exteriors upgrades. The A4 is newer in all aspects. But some other stuff like suspension is needed.

What's the point of driving an uncommon vehicle if it doesn't suit your needs or wants? Especially if it's your dd...

xattica

There are just 3 avant B5 in PR that I'm aware off. Miguelo's famous GT3 orange (Giac/Maestro dealer), Eurohouse (unitronic dealer) and my avant (poor bastard). Right now only my Avant is on the road. The Avant suit my needs. I'm just studying the opportunity of a M3. I spend about 6k in upgrades. And just 2k to move the car from NC to PR. The M3 have about 20k in upgrades.

No jodas! Yo vivia en Rio Piedras cerca de la UPR. Ahora estoy en NY 160 millas al norte de la ciudad, en la capital. Que haces tu por alla?

Yo tengo una Avant 2001 1.8TQM y no la cambio por nada.

Okay, back to your regular programming.

I really don't like the idea of the Elim kit on a DD tip A4 B5!
"cabeza grande..." Puff!

I will post the same question on a M3 forum! Lol!

what's not to like about an slim dd? Its probably the best dd setup. As for the tip part of it, what does that matter?

Torque band! I know the limitations of the tip tranny.
If I spend some cash on an Elim kit plus
Maestro 7 I will use it hard! Tranny will suffer. Don't want ti spend
More on manual tranny swap.

Why?
Its faster, more fun, easier to maintain, and more reliable?

IMO, the E36 M3 is just a better all around car. Faster, better brakes, much better handling, better seats, N/A motor (I'm a much bigger fan of N/A these days), and it just looks better, in my opinion. If you don't have a need for an Avant and you want a more proper "sports car" (and not a commuter car trying desperately to be "sporty"), then I'd do the swap. The Avant may be rare in PR, but I'd much quicker take a DD that's more fun to drive. Any car is over 10 years old will have its share of maintenance issues, but don't let those scare you if the car has been properly cared for by the previous owner.

I'd easily trade my B6 A4 for a proper E36 M3 any day.

avant is tip. e36 is manual?

Go for the e36

andyrew
04-25-2012, 06:29 PM
E36 SHOULD be worth more. Especially as time goes on. Hows the maintenance on both? Personally that would be my deciding factor... If the E36 has had EVERYTHING and then some, and yours is going to need some stuff... Bam easy decision. Same reverse.

No shit... you're selling it.

If your avant was manual I dont think this would even be a question. For me a manual is one of the most important aspects of a car being fun. I think its 50/50 whether to trade or not

I understand, im just saying that you are planning on getting rid of it, hence easier to see yourself just trade it away. OP never intended to sell or trade his car.
