View Full Version : Is the B5 Going to get "old?"

Rosati
05-08-2005, 04:42 PM
ahhh another one from rosati.....

as most of you know , im the bum whose almost got his a4. i just got a loan and im just waiting to sell my car now. Ive been thinking -- is the b5 gonna get old? i was around when the "who doesnt like the b6 a4 " thread was up, and a lot of people didnt like the b6, naturally bc u guys have these. Yes the b6 looks like a few other cars, but once it is modded i believe it to be very sexy and sleek - i love the sharp edges of the trunk - etc etch.

but if im gonna spend the money on the b5 is it worth it to just get the b6? since i do like it ? btw i can get it an '02 for about 12k

any comments are welcome.....thank you -Rob

b6 looks more dated with the B7 out now. but since the B5 looks drastically different than the B6/7 then I think it still maintains a look of its own.No, I don't think it will look outdated for another 4 or 5 years

its a classic, they never get outdated.

the appeal of the B5 isnt just cause it was new, its because Audi created a damn sexy. good looking car. and that will never change.

b6 prices will come down with the release of the b7

i have thought long and hard about this and came to the conclusion that the b5 is a timeless looking car, probably audi's best car that will go down in history as the best body style in another 25 years it will be remembered as the cream of the crop

There is a reason the B5 body style stayed the same for 7+ years.

lol, that's because the b5 is outdated buddy.

sure, b5's can still look good, but when you see one, you know they belong to an older generation.

Outdated in what way? He is just mad because a B5 with less power will still hand him his ass.

Where can you get a B6 for $12k? Their Blue Book is over $22K here in Seattle for the Quattro 1.8Ts.

I don't think it will get old. I love seeing older, good condition classy cars like early 90s 5 series BMWs, Audi A6s etc. Keep it clean, don't rice it out, and it will look good for years to come.

If you just have to have the latest and greatest get a B6 [rolleyes]

Lets put it this way...in 5 years the B6 will be "old" too...so if you care what others think or always have to have the latest and greatest you're never gonna have a car for very long...not the way to be happy with your car.

i think b5s are one of those timeless, classic body styles whereas b6s look more new-style ....for now.

completely stock, b5s look their age IMO. but once you do some minimal mods on it (namely, suspension and ecodes if it's pre-99.5), it looks nice and fresh.

of course, this is all a matter of opinion and always will be. but like someone said, there's a reason b5s lasted 96-01. b6s only went from 02-03.

granted, b7s weren't a major overhaul or anything...

b5's have such good styling to me.

the lines and curves are so perfect.

if you see allot of the other cars, that are made in 1997(my year), you KNOW it was made in 1997 but when you see the b5, it looks up to date with the current cars. the b5 will never die. It is and always will be a huge stepping stone for audi.

i meant when b5's are modded... such as the one posted by ALEN... at that point, you can overlook the aging, and see that its a nice, "fresh" looking car.

but when you compare a stock b6 to a stock b5, the b6 makes the b5 look like shiet.

and yes, the b6 is now outdated as the b7 has come out, but its such a huge change in design, that many will argue that sticking to the b6 design is a much better choice.

however, i think we all can agree that the b7 interior (navigation mostly) makes the b6 and b5 interior look like poop.

People cannot believe my car is a 98. Its closing in on being 8 years old. Not too bad. People are still modding EG civic and if done right and not riced out, they still look good. I think as far as body styling goes, designers are at its peak with the amount of technology they have at hand. This makes it hard for slightly older cars to get out dated. For example; compare a 1990 modle car of any maker to a 1998 modle of the same company. Drastic changes. Then compare a 1998 to a 2004 or 2005. The changes are not as drastic. Follow me?

The B5 A4 is a great car. But personally, now that I'm getting older I want a bigger car. Around this time next year I should be in an A6 2.7T or 4.2. The A6 has a more grown up feel to it. Hell, if I can find one with good miles and price, I'll look for an S8 but we'll have to wait and see about that.

that's because most people only look at the years. And because it 's "older" some say it's outdated.

I pointed out the a B6 A4 to a friend of mine who's not really familiar with Audis. She said it looked plain compared to my car, but when I said it was a 2004, she said it looked kinda hot. Some people, yes even some of us Audi owners think like this too. I bet it was probably some young punk that made that statement. I really like the B6, but I see no reason to jump yet. Especially since B5's are cheap with the release of the B7. The B5 S4 IMO is still one of the nicest cars on the road.

B5 and B6 platforms are both great looking cars. As far as the B5s looking outdated? I dont see it, sorry. They may not be the newest body style or design, but that does not make them look outdated. Even if it was outdated by some peoples standards....who gives a shit? If YOU look at a B5 and enjoy its styling, then that would be all that matters.

i had a choice of a brand new volvo s40, half a year used b6, mazda-3 (dad's pick...), and i STILL wanted my own b5 in black. its chic, has nice class, refined lines with good performance for its size and abilities...and has the old school feel of an engine with a new(er) school car.

kinda like the earlier air-jordans...

Isnt this whole threat a little biased though? honestly, if money wasnt an issue how many of us would take a b5 over a b6? i could be wrong but im sure some would "upgrade". but were in a b5 forum so the majority will like their b5, and of course in the b6 forum the same applies. but i could be wrong, though i doubt it....

I never saw the B6 the difference to justify a change of car. Even now with the B7, the B6 will be more "outdated" that the B5. Just because it lasted very few years.

My next car must be an evolution of this and that only means a A6 avant or AllRoad. Not a B6 or B7.

fanuvbrak
05-09-2005, 09:32 AM
the only downside to the b5 (which is gorgeous) is that, as they go down in value, they will be more accessible to the honda/nissan crowd. so soon, you'll be seeing b5's with big ass wings and bad body kits and coffee can mufflers and neon ground effects. but on the other hand, this'll just make a stocker look better.

I would definitely upgrade. I love both the B5 and the B6, but if I nice 2001 sliver A4 with just the right touches came along with low miles and a price that couldn't be beat, I would take that over the B6. I mean, my car is getting up there in terms of mileage and I am one of those that gets something newer with less miles or no miles just for my piece of mind.

IMHO- the B5 might eventually look outdated but it was a Classic SEXY design from the start. My wife and I switched cars today. She drove my A4 to work. I just gave it a mega detail this weekend and let me tell you I couldn't take my eyes off it as she drove away. It might be considered outdated by some but this car is simply magic. I've loved many cars in my time but I have never enjoyed just staring at one like I do my Santorin B5 A4. [hail]

honestly i had enough money to buy a b6 when it first came out and i chose to buy a b5 instead, its a nicer looking car in my opinion, i am diggin the b7s now tho. b6s dont look that great, i think the ultrasports are the nicest ones. personaly it all comes down to preference and your question is, will the b5 get old not what do u preffer. so i think it wont get old, at least in my book.

Another thing going for the b5 is that it is much more rare than its competition. Where I live, I would be lucky if I saw 1 b5 driving along as opposed to the 20 3 series and c classes I will definately see. Even if the design is 10 years old, it is still not that recognizeable to most people.

Of course, I'd own any of them. I love my Audi. I still wouldn't trade my Avant for a sedan, but that's AFTER owning an Avant. They are so USEFUL. My answer to an SUV.

I've discussed this with my wife (and others) several times. the B5 is a timeless design. Right now, the only car I'd trade my A4 Avant for would be an S4 Avant, or maybe an Allroad (then again, that's an Avant as well). They are just so useful, and damn sexy in my book.

i dont think the b5 even at 10 yrs old is dated. I think its come along the lines of a MK2, alot are getting old and beat but when you see one nicely modded or even just stock in good shape it makes you think "damn thats sweet, a mint b5"

My car is a 1997, going on 14 y/o..... and to the average person who dosent know much about audis...think it looks new!

I had the question; "what year is it" asked..and when i said 97 w/ 290k km on it..they could not believe it.
Just goes to show that we, as B5 owners, might have a prejudice that when we compare our car to a b6 or b7 it might look out dated. Anyone else cant really tell.
Not to mention, it all depends on taste.

Personally, If I were to win the lottery tomorrow, I would get a 97 M5, a diablo, another cleaner black/black b5, and a scirocco...and mod them the fk out...except the diablo of course :D

Lol to tell the truth, to me the b6's dont look so great all rounded and curvy. Sharper tail end looks freakin great with the b5s. this car will live on a very long time. whenever someone gets in my car the luxury of it surprises them and many times ive heard, "damn, id get this".

I get compliments on my car all the time. It's a 1997 and it still turns heads with relative ease. I don't think the b5 will ever get old. The people who drive them now may move on to other a4's but its almost a guarantee that some one will pick up where they left off when that happens.

it's definitely the best choice in the 4k range...considering that civics from the same year goes for 3k plus..
i would move on only when i save up enough money for a B8 S4..

As an owner of Both a B5 avant and B6 sedan, I have to say that I feel the B6 is the best looking sports sedan on the road....period....

However, The b5 is a close second. Just my $0.02

What he said

My b5 still looks great after all these years, a little dated but still a classic. The b6 can easily pass as a 09 or above model.
