Hi guys,

I know this has been treated a lot in these kind of forums but I want to know, what is the best bang for the buck?

A K04 with stock internals, stock intake and stuff OR go big with a GT2871R and the custom shit that comes with it?

I KNOW that the GT will put out more HP's, BUT, I intend doing this by myself with no speed shop help whatsoever except for the ECU mapping.

And, how much can you pull out of a K04?

Thanks a lot guys!

ko4: 230-245 hp
GT2871R: is rated for 450hp, but we'll say 390+hp to be fair

My suggestion is to save up and do it right the first time around.

big turbo your going to have to throw in some rods and a whole bunch of goodies. check how much your cars rods can handle

my advice is go franken turbo, its a bit bigger hybrid Ko4 style turbo. better results for the little extra price than ko4.

I never heard that you could make a hybrid with a K04, from which turbo does the ''hybrid'' parts comes?

Just installed my GT2871R within the last month. On stock block and 15psi (what my clutch can handle) it is really fun to drive. You don't have to do rods, but you just need to make sure not to overboost and keep your system in check. Then when you have money, do forged rods and crank up the boost. And the best thing about going with a T25 or T3 (preferred) manifold/turbo is you will always have room for improvement. But it really boils down to your budget.

What did you swapped besides the turbo? Hence the ATW is a small port, do I need to go with the AEB head and a bigger intake manifold ? What kind of airbox do you run? Carbonio? Stock ? Custom?

I have the AWM with small port cylinder head. As for engine internal upgrades, completely stock. The rest of the car, not so much. And engine upgrades are coming soon.

Since you seem to know what you are talking about, I'll use you a little bit more! :P What software do you run on? And how do you know which injector sizes you need?

software is up to you, and injecors are up o the software. seerlah is running eurodyne non-maestro software from pag parts. you need to decide which turbo you go with before you decide which software and injectors. for k04 trubo, any go with giac. you could go wih frankentrubo, or a litle bit bigger and go gtrs, which is the biggest you should go on stock internals. a gt2871r may be too large for you if you dont want to do engine work. going with a turbo that size means your looking for real power, or 300 awhp. best thing to do is search for k04, gtrs, or gt2871r build threads on here or vortex and read through them to decide what is best for you. but i will say this. best bang for your buck will be the frankenturbo setup. you can get it done for less than $3000 with all new parts. look for deals and probably down to $1500. a full gt2871r is gonna cost about $5000 in parts alone, not to mention youd need rods installed

redline380 is correct. You should know that modding a car is not cheap to begin with. And a proper setup isn't cheap. Granted I did not pay that much for my setup, but I was collecting parts for over a year by grabbing deals when I saw them. Finally completed my kit a couple months ago. If you don't plan on doping engine work, I would suggest against the GT2871R or anything bigger. GT2860RS is fine, though. You really need to figure out what you want when all is said and done. If you think you will be happy with with like 280chp, then the Frankenturbo will be fine. If you think you will be happy with 240chp, then the k04 will be fine. If you want more power, just know what you are getting yourself into.

When it comes to tuning, the tuner will tell you what you will need to run with whatever tune you choose. Not all run on the same hardware. For example with my GT2871R, I had a choice between 440cc injectors at 4 bar or 630cc injectors at 3 bar. I chose 630cc injectors, because I plan on moving on from this turbo eventually and the 630cc injectors can still be used up to a certain limit. I suggest you do some reading to determine what it is you want. Here, I'll help you out:

if your car is a FWD as my 01 jetta was i used the KO-4 001 purchased alone and used apr tuning, i had exhaust, real cold air intake with gutted MAF and some upgraded hoses, the beauty of this is TORQUE, comes early and is a fun drive, no internal mods, i had close to 300ft lb which required a quaife differential to handle massive torque steer still 30 MPG, about $3000 excluding the quaife the only thing i had installed for $2000 parts including upgraded clutch and flywheel, just traded on my 01 TT, vw had 199,xxx miles still 20" on vac gauge, a fun reliable ride for not a lot of $$$$

I have to say it all depends on how much power you want.
if you want crazy fast BT 330 hp+ expect to be spending 7k on parts alone. remeber theres internals and clutches and stuff
if you want 300 hp which is modestly fast, go frankenturbo kit, intake, exhaust, DV valve, chip about maybe little over 3k in parts.

in my opinion the car just isn't the track type car to be worth doing all that work to. rather go crazy on a gutless miata
