Whats up guys, my names John and I drive an 01 A4 1.8TQM. I've had it since November when I traded my 94 Blazer for it. Ive been doing a decent amount of work to it recently so I figured I'd post up a thread, I always love reading other peoples threads.

And yes the previous owner did the full timing belt service right before I bought it, pictures and receipts to prove!

I bought it with some parts already on it such as:
Turbo
Frankenturbo kit (stock tune)
Forge DV

Exterior
Satin Black paint with Brilliant Black hood and roof
Euro A4 front bumper
Euro trunk
Euro stubby passenger mirror (put stock back on)
M3 trunk lip
Shaved center molding
S4 sides

Interior
S4 black interior
S4 grey leather seats with matching door cards
Camo wrapped door trim
Podi column boost gauge
All weather Audi sport floor mats
A6 coin tray
A6 Door handles painted black

Engine Bay
Euro B5 Passat power steering cover
B6 Audi charcoal grey coolant tank

Wheels/Suspension
17x9 BBS RC's, color is flat Olive Green
3mm spacers in the rear
Raceland coilover kit

Intake/Exhaust
Custom 2.5in straight back exhaust
Magnaflow muffler with custom turn downs
VMR test pipe with RAI motorsport J pipe (No CELíS)
VMR downpipe
K&N Panel filter

Extra Parts
CXRacing FMIC with 2.5" universal piping
Clutch masters FX300 clutch kit and new flywheel (sold)
Winter wheels (AT Italia S5)
Passenger mirror

Since then I have installed a few parts and done a few things such as
440cc Bosch Green Giants
Motoza Tune by Dave (awesome guy to work with, recommend him 100%)
K&N Panel filter
Fuel filter
Cabin filter
NGK Spark Plugs
SAI, N249, N112 deletes
Installed CXRacing FMIC and cut up bumper
Cleaned up the headlights some, want to do some more
Painted the BBS' gunmetal

Now some pictures! (I am by no means a photographer AT ALL and the pictures will reflect this, any tips welcomed)

A few days after I bought it at school, didnt even wash it yet

Do a short throw shifter [wrench] they clean up the interior and have a purpose ;))) lol I love this car even before you owned it but nice work so far.....I don't think the gun metal flows with the satin black though.

The racelands are ok, you can't beat them for the price. I plan on upgrading to something better with dampening adjustment because Im a suspension freak.

I was actually thinking about picking up a short shifter today. Its on the list, just not very high up haha. I am loving the gunmetal on the satin black. I need to clean the car up and take some pictures, its a significant difference in the color of the satin when the car is clean and polished.

Are you sure they are 9 inches wide? I've never heard of 17x9 RC's. Are you sure they aren't 7.5"?

They look awesome nonetheless.

Dalers08
03-27-2012, 11:03 PM
To be honest I'm not sure. They certainly don't look 9in wide to me, that's what the PO told me. I meant to change that on my list but forgot.

Love the car accept for the trim. I'm military and it drives me crazy when people do that. Get the short throw I got the e-bay one and love it for the money can't go wrong. makes a huge differance in the fun factor of the car.

The resprayed wheels look much better than the off-green. Diggin' the direction you are going with your car, but as sgt_g said, not sure about the trim either. It doesn't exactly flow with anything.

Dalers08
03-28-2012, 11:01 AM
Yeah their is no way I am keeping the digi trim. I am slowly getting to it haha. I just havent decided what i want to replace it with. I think carbon fiber would look awesome but everyone does it, so I just need to look more. If you guys have any ideas shoot them out.

Also I'm in class right now but how much does the eBay short shifter cost that you have sgt_t? I haven't really researched it yet, when I research something I need to buy it haha so I just wait till I'm ready to buy to research.

Nice! And for a suggestion, you may want to consider a larger fmic. Log your IATs, because that turbo seems to produce really high intake temps from running so hot because the size of the turbo vs power output.

I have been logging with Motoza and Dave said the IAT's look really good. I will check out one of my logs tonight and post what my IAT is under full load.

Did your fmic come with mounting brackets? If not, how did you mount it?

Dalers08

It didn't come with anything to mount the intercooler. I ended up buying some steel bars and bending them and bolting them to the radiator holes. I can post a better picture of it tonight.

So I have a lot of driving ahead of me this weekend! I am going to Redline Speed Worx tommorrow in NJ (2hour ride) for an alignment. Then from there going down to Rising Sun, MD to visit family (another 2hrs). And then on Saturday night I am driving back home (3.5hr ride). I hope I get through the NYC area without losing my oil pan haha.

Dalers08

Had a little road trip this weekend with her.

Friday morning I left at 6:30am heading for Redline Speed Worx in Washington, NJ for an alignment on the Hunter alignment rack they have. Awesome shop, awesome guys, very happy with the service they provide. Ryan showed me around the shop and they are a friendly bunch of guys and have some cool shit in there! They could only align the rear though because both of my front tie rod assemblies are frozen -.-. I am going to pick up some S4 ones eventually and throw them in. They charged me half price for the alignment which is very fair. Overall I would recommend them 100%.

From there I went to Maryland to visit some family and just got back about 2 hours ago. Audi drove so smooth, just scraped on some roads really bad near NYC! I need to buy a skid plate...

On another note... I am kind of conflicted right now. I dont know if I should keep going with this car (mod wise) and enjoy it OR start to save up for my dream car (Z32 300zx) for a second car/toy.

If I keep modding the Audi brakes are next and thats $750 for everything. Then suspension... which I dont even want to think about yet.

If I start to save for the Z32 I would stop modding the Audi and just keep it clean and keep doing the maintanence that comes up on it and take care of it. But a Z will be a long ways away... a year or two.

Let the argument commence!

P.S. I ordered a DDM Tuning 55w 5000k HID kit for her today hahahahaha

Frankenturbo DD with clean mods. Get yourself a fast weekend car if you like. Who cares if the ride is harsh on the project car bc you will be smooth sailing in the Audi (once you upgrade). Skidplate it a must with NY weather / roads.

Thats your opinion... you are allowed to have it even if you are wrong.

The Z32 is a classic, timeless car with a strong motor good for 500whp stock and drivetrains that handle 1000whp all day long. The interior is a beautiful design to go with the exterior and the community is awesome.

Are they rare over there or something?

Didn't mean to be rude when I said they are good for nothing else.. Because I see about 10,000 every time i go out lol.

They are everywhere hear, always beat up, always with bogans driving them like they are driving a Ferrari..

I have to strongly disagree with you on the interior.. it's an old 80's look.

Nice Ride!! I too am work with Dave from Motoza for my franken turbo, but my car is being it's usual self and being a pain.
I do have a question for you I have a similar fmic and i have been trying to figure out if it's cutting the mustard with this turbo.
How do I look at the logs and figure if it is or not??

If you are working with Dave ask him what your IAT's look like. If you want to look for yourself take a log with Intake Air Temperature and do a few pulls back to back. Then open the log with Excel and look at the IAT value, the number is in degrees celcius. My IAT's are very good with my FMIC.

She got $20 worth of premium tonight. She is sucking it up fast and I don't know way. Moderate driving and I only got about 240 miles to the tank. I think I have a vacuum leak to figure out. Sometimes my vacuum will be around 10, other times it will be 21... its weird.

jaychen
04-09-2012, 08:51 PM
Something is wrong if you vacuum fluctuates that much. It should always be up near -20inHg. Unless you're running stupid big cams or something.

$20, huh?

That would be like 10L for me, or 2 gallons?

Dalers08
04-09-2012, 08:58 PM
Yeah something is leaking somewhere. Its just odd (to me) that sometimes I start the car and its at 21, then the next time I start it its a 10.

Yea gas is rediculous, more so where you are I guess. Its $4.35 for 93 by me.

Comination of both really. 4 days a week I drive 15 miles on the highway everyday. The rest is mostly city. When I clocked that though it was mostly highway on my trip to Maryland.

Ok so I finally got my HID kit in the mail yesterday only to find out that one of the connectors is broken. I don't know what it's called but its broken clean off and the peice wasn't in the box, which makes me think it was damaged before shipping, which has me angry. I filed a claim with DDM but haven't gotten a response yet. I will call them Monday. The kit was a 55w 5000k slim ballast kit. Here is a picture of the damage.

Also, don't forget to vote for me in the Streets Are Life contest on facebook! I got a late start so I need to catch up!

I was hoping for 220whp and 245wtq to be honest. I sent Dave the graph and he wasn't happy either. This is the first 2001 he has tuned on the FT, so I expect it to take some time. I am happy with how the car feels right now, numbers dont mean much to me. If he can get more out of it I wont say no though :).

Dynojet, 93, peaked at 21 held 19-20. Since then Dave has worked on the tune and it is easily faster. I wouldn't be suprised if it was at 220whp 230wtq. Keeps up with my friends 200whp(ish) 240sx that weighs in around 2500lbs with him in it.

The spool is the incredible part of this turbo and tune.

Ouch. Dynojet is usually an ego-booster too. Glad to hear that the new tune is working out for the best. I suspect that the 2.5" exhaust is becoming a significant restriction for you at this point. I would also take a hard look at your FMIC core and piping too. Eventually, if you want to max-out this turbo, there will be a point where you may want to consider using the S4 bumper to allow for a larger IC core and piping. EDIT: I see that you've got 2.5" piping... so maybe its time to consider a larger core =]

It'd be interesting if you could log some airflow data (g/s) and hit the dyno again with this new tune.

Dalers08
07-17-2012, 11:41 AM
I was actually thinking about the exhaust the other day, I think I would benefit from a 3in as well. Yes I have 2.5in piping, I think that helps with the outstanding spool. The core is fine, Dave says airflow looks great as well as no heat soak issues. I'm dying to get an S4 bumper though for looks as well as getting my fogs back.

Plans with the car now are just maintain it and take care of it. I need a clutch kit, probably going to go with the CMFX300. Going to do the entire JHM Trio short shifter package with the stainless shift knob. I would like to get different coils, probably ST's. Brakes all around will be upgraded using the OEM BBK. S4 front bumper... I want to rewrap the camo trim in the interior... and would love to pick up some terracotta leather/power/heated front and rear seats with terracotta door cards. By that time I will probably need new tires... after that I am done with the car. Just going to drive it and daily it and save up for a weekend car.

I am happy with the power the car makes right now, yeah its not the fastest thing on the road but its peppy and fun, spools literally instantly and its reliable.

Finally sold my Mustang on Sunday. Turned around and ordered a bunch of parts for the family sedan yesterday! Also plan on lowering it back down some this week, not too much though.

I ordered:
Clutchmasters FX300 with the Fibertuff material w/240mm LWFW
JHM Trio Short Shifter package (normal height)
JHM Weighted Stainless knob powdercoated Satin Black with the 5spd pattern red (1.44lbs, so excited!)
Apikol passenger side transmission mount, street density
Apikol snub mount
Redline MT90 75w-90 for the transmission
Redline diff fluid

I also have a magnetic drain plug to throw on the transmission.

All in all I am super excited to get all this done.

Work will be performed by Elite Motorsports on Long Island as I can't get my garage right now, wouldn't trust anyone else with my car.

After that's done next is brakes. I will probably be going with the A8/TT upgrade in the front and the A6 upgrade in the rear with stoptech pads, rotors, stainless lines, tyrol sport slider pins and some quality fluid. Also thinking about painting my calipers a dark red color. Then after that is new coils, hopefully Koni's as I really want something with dampening adjustment.

How does the CX racing intercooler fit? Can you rock the fogs and lower grills with it?

The CX racing intercooler fits well, but since I have 2.5in piping there was just no way I was going to save anything. It looks horrible and I miss my foglights, I plan on going with an S4 front bumper eventually.

this is a great thread a lot of good info, I have been on the fence about going with the franken or going into the gt28 size turbos for some time now. I know I would like the power of the gt turbos but It takes a bit more $$$$ and I don't want to wait/ save that long. I also know that a lot of people that go with a k04 witch i know makes less power than a franken, but people say it gets boring after some time and they end up spending more money on a gt28 or gt30 size turbo for more power. What im asking is really about how much money will it take (did you spend if you don't mind. ball park) to get the franken turbo setup running well 220-230whp?? or should i just save more money and go gt28 size turbo?
Clean car good work [up]
thanks.

If its a 2001 your talking about, its only 2000... NA motorsports sells a full kit with a tune.

If its any other year youll have to get a tune and fueling from somewhere else.

Well I bought my car with the FT kit on it, I did the fueling and tune on it though.

The new FT (F21) should make a little bit more power then mine. The kit right from him is about $1100, plus about $250 for 440cc injectors (what I went with) and $490 for a Motoza tune. As long as your car is up to par with any other maintenance that's really it. Obviously you need a diverter valve and other necessary things like a boost gauge and you WILL eventually need a clutch.

I personally am happy with where my car is at right now. Sometimes I wish it was quicker but I plan on building another car in a few years when I am out of school, so that keeps me in check. But the spool is very fun.

OK cool, my car is a 2001.5 so it would be best to just to call Dave and get everything from him?
I have
DV
Boost gauge
turbo back exhaust with TP
EVOMS FMIC with samco piping
maintenance is on par.
when you did the SAI delete did motoza get rid of the Cel? I had to move mine when i did the fmic and I hate the SAI anyway. I have APR now on my k03 fun but slow...
I want to do BBK and coils before I go bigger turbo so im just getting as much info as i can
thanks

This is what mine turned out like (though I'm using a 3" thick Garrett IC, not a CXRacing):

Sounds like you are good to go. Dave coded out both my SAI and O2 sensor code.

Yep, 2.5" piping, I'm not keeping it though. It's been a giant pain in the ass, mostly because once you cut those universal kits you lose the lip that keeps the silicone couplers from blowing off under boost. I should have tried to make my own lip on them (someone here did that with vice grips they modified) but I never got around to it. I can't tell you how many times I've had to re-attach one of the pipes because it blew apart at 25psi. Instead of dealing with that I bought a pre-bent kit for our cars off eBay, hopefully that works better. The other problem I ended up having is the 034 Motorsports silicone T coupler (for the diverter valve) ended up ripping. So I have a boost leak until I get that new piping (should be in today).

So what tunes are people running now with the FT setups?

Ive heard a 440 file, a 550 file, ko4 files, and j-fonz/motonza files...

whose doing what?

The pre bent pipe for the B5's from Godspeed, work great, other than me hating that the passenger side is 2 pieces and not 1. Ive been planning on getting a little more piping and having the 2 welded together.

As for tuning, Im running the 440cc file from C2 Motorsports, been a little over a year now.

I think that's what I got... http://www.ebay.com/itm/380456181495?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_3917wt_1186

I'm using Malone Tuning. It's not as popular with the FT tunes just because not many people use it. I got a good price on it so I went for it. My tune still isn't finished, I ran into issues with the car, then I had a baby and there's just been no time to work on it. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to it soon, I'd like to get the tune finished so I can dyno it.

Same piping, just different couplers and it looks like its missing the MAP flange.

Yeah I actually blew off an intercooler pipe yesterday on the way home from a meet, not the first time its happened either. I want to get that part welded.

Dropped the car off at Elite MS yesterday and picked it up today, quick turnaround time for a lot of work!

First impression... holy shi* the JHM trio is amazing, and I still have the stock knob. Clutch feels great, going to take it easy on it for a while then I will start ripping on it and having some fun. Not really much different to drive overall, I feel a lot more grunt down low though from the LWFW.

Also last week I took off my diverter valve, which I was told was a Forge 006 (on the car when I bought it) turns out its a knockoff and it was leaking bad. I ordered a Forge splitter and got it Monday. Installed it in hybrid mode and holy crap is sounds horrible. Put it on full recirc and it works great, car holds boost much better now, spools quicker as well. I'm running the splitter on 22 clicks.

Again this is everything I just got done... The shift knob should be here next week

Clutchmasters FX300 with the Fibertuff material w/240mm LWFW
JHM Trio Short Shifter package (normal height)
JHM Weighted Stainless knob powdercoated Satin Black with the 5spd pattern red (1.44lbs, so excited!)
Apikol passenger side transmission mount, street density
Apikol snub mount
Redline MT90 75w-90 for the transmission
Redline diff fluid
Forge Splitter DV

Thanks, you should buy it now! I would love to see it go to a good home.

Final feedback... thing grabs like a mofo and feels like a stock clutch. The JHM trio is well worth the money and I will 100% get one on whatever S4 I get. Theirs a little noise from the shifter bushing with the windows up but it doesn't bother me. The mounts vibrate a little taking off from a dead stop but its been getting better the more miles I put on the car. It does feel a little quicker also with the LWFW.

All in all, nice clutch setup and buy the JHM trio!

Now that I've picked up my B5 I'll probably be keeping it forever but I'm excited for whatever your future plans are. I had the trio on my B5 Passat and couldn't agree more, its the bees knees and I can't wait to get one for my B5. Good to know about the clutch also, it's only a matter of time for me now at 136k.
