Hey guys, I will first off say I didn't search around this forum yet, but I am starting my search into what exactly I want in my car for an audio set up. What I have in mind though is a double din head unit with a touch screen. I want the touch screen to be as big as possible (seems like that would be around a 7" screen) but will settle for a little less. As far as specs, I would like it to be able to drive the stock speakers and have 6 RCA outputs for amplifiers, and a rear mounted USB port so I can easily conceal a USB flash drive in the glove box.

I haven't looked at car audio stuff in a couple years and have never really shopped around for a double din touch screen before. I am trying to stay in the sub $400 range. I see the Pioneers (AVIC D3 I think) is around that range and everyone I know with an Audi has a Pioneer unit for a double din. I was wondering if there was any other brands I should be looking at in this process.

The unit will be going in a 2002 B6 A4 for reference. If there is anything else I didn't mention that you guys would need to know just tell me and I will reply with the details.

Thanks!

I had a D3 in my former B7 A4. Loved it. That said, it's WAY too fucking old of a unit now. Don't get any of the D-Series Pioneers if you are going to run a massive audio setup (which it looks like that's what you want to do). You want a Z-Series with the 4V preouts. Trust me on that. I currently have a AVIC Z-120. I strongly suggest you save your money and increase your budget a bit. When you decide what you want, search this forum for "AVIC" and realted search terms. In that search you will find the NUMEROUS times I've posted what harnesses, dash kits, etc. you need to get.

Single 10" and dual 7's under the seats isn't what I consider massive. I would only worry about 4V preamp outputs if I was planning on maxing out the gain on my amps.

I know how to spec a system out, but with the touchscreen units now a big thing to consider is user interface and touch quality, something of which is not something you can spec out. You have to have experience with the actual device to know these. So shopping online makes this difficult and places like best buy don't have all the units on display which I am looking at.

Ideally I would love to stay with Pioneer, but it seems like they are more pricey..

Are you going to keep the stock amp and rear speakers the way they are? If you are, the 2V preouts won't cut it. It will severely diminish the volume from the rear speakers. I, too, know how to spec a system and have installed Pioneer AVIC units in 2 Audi's and 2 VW's along with subs. If you don't plan to keep them and are going to replace them with new components in the rear (which it sounds like you aren't), then you're right, you won't need 4V preouts. Still, you get what you pay for and IMHO Alpine's have a good touch interface, but Pioneer's are better. Not to mention, aesthetically, the Pioneers are the best fit for most cars.

My main problem with the Alpine units is that everything is an additional module, and they are typically not cheap either.

Used would be the best bet to find something under $400, if that were my budget though (and unless I needed nav) I would seriously ask myself if I needed a double DIN touch screen unit. While they don't look as good (to be honest most double DIN's in my opinion don't look all that good either in the Audi dash, something to do with the extra space left around the unit makes it stick out too much for me), a really nice single DIN can be picked up for $400.

If you Google search the new Pioneer units, the AVH-P4400BH is a great unit 'around' your budget. You'll have to come up with another $200 or so for installation kits/accessories, but installing the unit is not a pain in the arse. Christian at ENFIG can get you hooked up with the right goods on the back end.

Bought many times from enfig before. Also highly recommend.

Still haven't bought anything yet. I have been looking at units though.

I think I want to get this unit:

I am not sure what to do about a dash kit or wiring harness for the install. I have done it in a few other cars before but never an Audi, which has so many different connectors and different systems then I am used to dealing with.

Hopefully someone from ENFIG or wkornfeld can chime in here.

Wiring Harness: http://enfigcarstereo.com/CONNECTS2_CTSAD003.html
Pioneer Quick Connect for Connects2 Wiring Harness (so you have no cutting to do for power, etc.): http://enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_PNP_PIO0232.html
Conects2 to Pioneer for SWC: http://enfigcarstereo.com/CONNECTS2_CTPIONEERLEAD.html
Dash Kit: http://enfigcarstereo.com/ENFIG_RMK8_A4B67.html
Buy Radio Removal Keys: http://enfigcarstereo.com/42ND_42_002.html, look at your antenna connector and then go to this general page for 2002-2004 Audi A4: http://enfigcarstereo.com/RADIO_AUDI_A4_02.html to find the proper antenna adapter.

NOTE: You may want to call Christian at Enfig and verify these parts, but pretty sure this is all you will need to integrate completely into your car. I've done several of these installs, the most recent in my 2011 A3 all using enfig's products and they've worked great for me.

What is conects2?

It's a custom wiring harness made in the UK that just plugs in and translates the canbus to the remote plug of aftermarket HU's. That way your SWC controls work among other things. It's relatively plug and play compared to PAC units, etc. Totally worth it.

SWC is "Steering Wheel Controls" I assume?

I have a 2002 B6 A4 with no controls on the steering wheel, so from what you posted, what would that eliminate? I can't exactly tell from the pictures and descriptions what is what. I think I would just need the harness with the RCA plugs on it then, correct?

The other question I have, is that I have the infamous antenna amplifier issue, I have seen some threads on here about which after market antennas to use (the one I remember is a small back rectangle) I was hoping you could recommend something for me to use?

On top of the antenna question, I have a buddy who has his aftermarket antenna (also has a 2002 B6 A4 with the antenna amp issue) mounted on the front of his dash, but I see people on here to say to mount it at the top of the back window. So what is the easiest way to route the wire to the top of the back window? I would have to assume it would be under (on top?) of the headliner, which I know enough to pull out but would rather not.

You are a great help davis449, thanks for taking the time to help me! I just want to get everything done right the first time I pull everything apart.

I'd get the Connects2 anyway, despite not having Steering Wheel Controls. As Christian stated in another thread in here, it will read the can and give you power, etc. so you don't have to cut anything. The second harness I posted is so it directly plugs into the Pioneer HU, again, so you don't have to cut anything. As far as the antenna adapter goes, just make you get one that has the blue wire for power coming off of it and wire that into the power antenna wire (blue one). That will provide the necessary amplification. Don't bother with external antennas.

the pioneer avh-p4400bh is brand new model and if you look on buy.com I think its right in your price range.. my friend just got the avh-8400bh in his b7 cabriolet and boy its nice.. hd radio is very nice , xm sounds awesome on it too. the difference between the avh-8400bh vs avh-p4400bh is something called mix track... it blends your music from 1 song into another like a dj on its own.. the 4400 has rear usb jack so does the 8400, the 3400 does not it has the usb jack only on the front..

he only went with the factory wiring didn't do the steering wheel controls.. really don't notice it.. and saves 200.00 on the wiring..

if you want xm , check ebay you can get the xm pioneer module cheap < 50.00 if you look hard enough. just make sure its not blacklisted by xm!

I just wired my avant for xm, ran the ipbus cable down alongside passenger side.. fits great, you need a 18mm deep socket for the rear seat catch lock bolt.

good luck....
