View Full Version : Best coilopacks on ATW?

I'm looking to replace my coilpacks. Existing ones have 12 years. Now with the K04/j31 upgrade (with all ads) I feel some pinging during high boost. With the k03/giac no pinging occurred.
I know AEBs with 2.0t coils and ATW cables are a very good upgrade. But what is the best way to go on the ATW? 2.0t or OEM coils? If 2.0t, MK6's one?

Thanks.

Why not try better plugs first?

Plugs are new gapped to .026

This is the first time I have read about this issue, and I'm not convinced your ignition coils is the issue.

Then good to know. Also no vagcom code. I repaired all leaks. So now I know know what could be.

Could be a clogged cat? I have a labree HFC.

The stock Hitachi/Beru coils are the best for your ATW.

Pinging is not a sign of bad coils or bad spark plugs, your getting full spark but just way too early for the amount of boost/timing the tune is running. The J31 runs really high boost 25-30psi which is way more then your K03 did.

What octane fuel are you running and how much boost are you seeing because you might need to tone it down a bit by using a MBC.

^+1 on what they said.

Coils definitely won't fix pinging.

Are you sure your pinging not misfiring. If your misfiring, coils would fix that.

Is like pinging. Missfires will send a cel right? Is like the car is running good, if I press hard the car start the feeling like when the DV is disconnected. You can drive it, you can see the 19-24 psi but cant feel it. And is just sometimes. Today the car runs good for 5 mins (testing). Thanks for the help. I will change the plugs. We're new on Sept 11, since then the car was parked.

You should log your timing pull and see if it's excessive.

I Will! How much is excessive?

Misfire under WOT/boost - Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrppppp sound. Acceleration just stops at that point even under boost. It won't buck or anything, it'd just stop accelerating. Like what you said, you see 20psi but can't feel it.

Misfire - Under light load it'l give a CEL. But under full boost and WOT I'm not entirely sure. I think mine didn't under WOT/boost. The coils that misfired in boost drove great except when in boost.

Pinging - Ticktickticktick sound.

You'll know you have too much timing if your timing pull block (block 20 iirc) is up there. Imho it should be less than 5 - 6. Some say as long as its single digit.

Pinging will sound like someone is shaking a can of ball bearings. Misfire at WOT/Boost will have a stutter feel and the boost should fluctuate since not all of the fuel is being burned.
