Ok so it all started when I was in the market for an intake and saw the prices and barely any options that would be functional. So I began, If you think about it, an intake is literally just a metal pipe, filter, couplers and a couple hose clamps and they want to charge people $300 which is absolutely ridiculous. So i began thinking to myself and what better to use than the stock air box, it draws in cold air from the front grille and provides a cleanish look.
Step 1 was the purchase of the parts at AUTOZONE! yes autozone hahah, but what could go wrong i was buying a filter and a pipe.... (trust me i usually only buy quality parts)
I purchased this:
(Spectre Air intake Kit)
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/3903/spe8219w.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/827/spe8219w.jpg/) $40
(Spectre 3" air filter)
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/9853/spe9132w.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/834/spe9132w.jpg/) $25
(Vacuum taps)
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4474/dscf5602y.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/13/dscf5602y.jpg/) $4
Also bought a file to file down the intake pipe after cutting to a good length.
CUT 3.25" off the end of the pipe to shorten it up a bit:
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9585/dscf5603v.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/100/dscf5603v.jpg/)
Put the intake on to test length:
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4614/img8833s.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/img8833s.jpg/)
Now time to remove the stock air filter and these components from the air box:
http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/406/dscf5612j.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/845/dscf5612j.jpg/)
Use the vacuum taps and the provided hose in the intake kit also notice the engine cover had to be slightly cut to fit the vacuum line, like below:

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6623/dscf5609.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/821/dscf5609.jpg/)
FINISHED PICS:

That looks awesome, nice write up. Have you seen any difference in performance or noise or anything since you installed it?

Now THAT is different. How's it sound now?
Should have like a throaty kind of sound to it
Try to find some roof shielding or something and cut it enough to cover the space between the pipe and airbox

That looks clean as hell man!
Great Job. You should have gone with a thinner/ foam filter. Would have been less restrictive (and since its in the box, safe and fine to use). It's essentially a "HKS style" filter...
Probably one of the sweetest custom intakes I've seen anyone make. If I had a 3.2.....I'd probably go this route.

System looks great!! Us 3.2 guys really do suffer from a lack of aftermarket capabilities. I've got the Evoms setup which i was fortunate to pick up second hand cause $300+ for that thing is not worth it at all. If only the 3.2 saw gains from intakes rather than just sound increase. Oh well we'll soon be seeing some love from R.A.I and JHM.

A 45hp bump due to chipping would be great!

It looks just. I would consider replacing the Spectre filter with a high quality one though. It's not worth to go $20 cheaper when it comes to Air filters. I'd say get a better filter.
After all, great job!
I'm curious how it sound!
I heard that metal intakes transfer heat more then plastic. The metal heats up all the way through from the engine ambient air temperatures thus heating up the inside air. Plastic gets hot on the outside, but doesn't transfer that heat inside.
Just what I heard, and why many manufacturers use plastic.

Yea, I tried my best to make the air as cool as possible by leaving the stock airbox, Definitely understand what your saying.

The fact that nobody really makes an intake for the 3.2 is doing you favor. They’re pointless.
This probably isn’t the help you’re looking for but it’s the truth and is probably the most helpful reply you’ll get.
Don’t spend a penny on engine performance mods on a 3.2 because the cost to benefit ratio is stacked against you.

Don’t bother. If you’re only doing it for sound just run a K&N and Swiss cheese the bottom of your stock airbox.

Just send me the 300 bucks instead. You won’t have 300 bucks anymore and your car will be the same.
Giving the money to me will do the same thing. 😁

K&N filter $50
Drilling holes in your stock airbox $free if you have a drill
Same effect, just MUCH cheaper and equally pointless.
Not trying to be harsh. Just realistic.

It's this exact reason I went for the 3.2 instead of the 2.0T. It's a virtual rabbit hole when it comes to engine mods for any car, Audi's included. For the amount of time I use my car I couldn't justify the cost of doing engine mods. I'd much rather spend the money on appearance improvements, regular maintenance or at the very least saving some money for the times I needed to have repairs done that were outside my skill set. But that's just me [:p]

I don’t want to sound like an idiot but any idea what and where vacuum taps can be found? I’ve asked multiple auto zone employees and they had no clue.

They are usually by the oil filters/plugs.. atleast in my store, your area is in my district so the isles should be set up the same, check there, also check the isle with gauges, specter filters, and carberator supplies, there are only a few so keep an eye out, note not all of the items each store carries are the same, they base it around what sells in the store so that theu can keep product that sells on the shelf, if u cant find it they should be able to order it for you.
