So my transmission took a large dump on me, 1st thur 4th do not engage only 5th and reverse work. Took it to my local AAMCO to get fixed (just took the transmission to them), but since this is my only car, I really needed it back quick. So after about a week and a half they did not even try to look at it, so I went there and took it back. Found a used transmission for $300 after shipping, was pretty proud of myself for finding one for such a low price, hopefully it turns out to be good. So while the transmission is out did some things to the car that I've wanted to do.

Paint the valve cover:

Also cleaned up the transmission mounts and installed new 034 street density mounts:

Question?
Does this engine seem healthy?

Also plan to replace the sway bar bushings and fix a oil leak at my drain plug with a ecs tuning one.

Engine looks good to me. Mine is more brown inside than that, but no sludge. I'm going to have to replace my tranny soon also, so says my mechanic.

No brown oil stain=newer head/engine. Lucky for you. My A4 had that as well.

Yeah, that head is definitely not factory (or has been off and hot-tanked at some point). Usually either the t-belt failed and bent all the valves, or the pickup screen clogged and it trashed the cam journals. 10-to-1 it was one of those two "popular" 1.8T failures.

Also, your shifting problem sounds like it could be an easy fix. Your symptoms would indicate a very probable issue with the "stop screws" (AKA "slider bolts") on the "relay shaft" inside the transmission. Failure of one of those bolts will cause a loss of one or more of the left/right shifting "gates". Easy and cheap to fix and does not require trans removal. Please check out these 2 threads:

EDIT: Just noticed I already told you about this in your previous thread regarding the trans problems. So it didn't end up being the slider bolts? I'd be surprised if that wasn't it.

Update:

Finally got a used transmission, into the car. Did a test run, while the car was up in the air, and noticed that my rear driver wheel was not spinning (tranny was in 1st gear). Could my rear diff be going bad, or was there not enough power to let is just drive in place, all the other wheels were spinning. Any other thing was that once the car was on the ground, driving in 1st gear, there is a whining noise as I accelerate, this does not happen in any other gear, almost sounds like I was going in reverse. What could this be and should I worry about it, because the car drives fine in all the gears.

that head is extremely clean. its obvious something went wrong with it because it was timed before, hence the red mark on the chain roller

Sorry guys forget to mention that I had bought a new engine from Jasper has about 75k miles on it now, just wondering if its looking good for that amount of mileage, also pushing about 20 (now)-24(feeling adventurous) lbs thru it.

can anyone answer the question about my rear diff?
