Hi, im john, this is my first time posting and i know ill get people getting mad about not searching (after reading over the website, it seems to happen a lot). anyway ive had my silver b7 a4 2.0T non s-line (i think) for about a year now and slowly have starting to customize it. As of now i have added red led's to the whole interior. they are not nearly as bright as i had hopped (or appeared to be in pictures), but that is a question for another day, unless someone has a quick answer. i have also plasti dipped the rims, rear emblem and badges, silver strip under the trunk, and the silver outline of the front. i am going to do the whole front grill, maybe even front badges when i have time. i fear getting the plasti dip behind the grill and assume thats bad. i dont want to remove the whole front bumper and cannot figure out how to cover the back of the grill to stop over spray. I have also done the 240 mod, the power steering one, and a few simple vag com mods. Before i start to get bombarded with peoples opinions of looks and sound, i would like to say that i am 17 years old and could care less what yall think is stupid. my main priorities is for it to look sporty and aggressive and sound even better. for me better = very loud. i dont want it to sound ricey or anything, but just aggressive sounding. i want to be sure to hear it when i am driving and i listen to music somewhat loud so yeah. i also dont have much money to spend on this.....at all. so the cheaper the better. not looking for anything over $1,000 but would prefer things bellow $500. i want to EXTREMELY stress- the cheaper the beater ;) (i know that goes against most peoples hear ideas)...so anyway
What I am looking for now:
Exhaust- like i said i want something loud. i am aware that there are many options. i know i cant spend like 800 bucks on a whole setup right now. i dont have to worry about passing emissions. eventually i assume i will need a new rear valence because most exhaust will have 4 tips? how should i start out getting my car louder? im not too worried about performance gains but dont just wanna go and start drilling holes. eventually when i start building up the performance, i dont want to have this money i put in it before wasted. so suggestions, start out with a down pipe? tips? resonator delete? im new to this so have no idea what im doing. im pretty good with stuff so i wouldnt mind trying to install something simple myself, though i cant weld, but can find someone who can. btw i dont want to hurt gas consumption- idk if that is possible. maybe pure straight pipes plus a down pipe? later and then eventually get a rear valence and quad tips? i have no idea so just shoot ideas. i like the sound of the straights. its loud but also rough/horse sounding
Exterior- i will be getting my windows tinted before summer because in LA it gets HOT. and i want to make the chrome window trim black. debating between plasti dip and black out tape? heard the tape can be hard applying to the corners. true? i want to make my car more aggressive and sporty. i am thinking about the copra r lip, but also the vortex front splitters (the two divided in half and probably a replica) but from what ive seen it doesn't look right on a silver a4. maybe even both of these? i ant to eventually lower the car but not anytime soon. any other suggestions on exterior mods? make my car look more custom and aggressive?
Other/future mods:
-without a doubt i want performance gains but almost all of them have high price tags $$$. so why not make it look and sound fast instead ;) unless anyone has any noticeably different performance gains from mods on the low end of price range - beloow $200-$300 if possible
-subwoofers
-new stereo- either audi RNSE or aftermarkert
-pretty much full new audio system... subs tweeters speakers amps!!!
-new brakes (feel the stooping power of the stock is not enough
-rs4 rear sway bar
-chip
-black out the roof
-clear corner mod
-license plate leds
-after the windows are tinted, add the "dope" sticker. looks great and adds a ice custom look
-eventually get real black rims, not just painted ones
-tint the tail lights
-yellow fogs
If you read all that i want to thank you. i have some doubts that no one will and i just wasted alot of time typing all this. being my first time i have no idea what to expect. please dont hold back any comments or opinions. there ALL welcome. you can think all my ideas are stupid and id like to know and why because like i said im new. i tried to keep this as simple as possible. ill add pics in tonight when i get a chance. all the help is appreciated. i want to thank nick at nickscarblog for posting the pics and stuff about his car because that gave me the idea to start. not that im copying him or anything. thanks again and please comment. other pictures are welcomed and encouraged. pm me or something too for help or whatever. i may eventually do some DIYs on the leds or plasti dip or simple things ive done (or future) because i know i ran into a lot of small problems that i wish i had help with and could not find answers

Don't tint the tails.
Don't put a DOPE sticker on.
Don't purchase mods for cheap because you want to ball on a budget.
Do take your time, and make it perfect.
Do use the search and lurk on the forums, there is a ton of information available.
I would follow this beginners list:
Tune: Performance wise, it is going to be the BEST bang for your buck. You will REALLY notice a difference.
Debadge the A4 & 2.0T: It will look much cleaner.
Clear corner.
Take off that plastidip on the wheels.
Coilovers.
New wheels.
Exhaust.

Ok so first off I read your entire post! Your car will never look aggressive with out Coilovers or lowering springs, IMO its just not possible! The more small mods you do to the car and its still 4x4 skyjacker status will just make it look awkward! just hacksaw your exhaust off before the resonators and its free, it will give you the "loud" exhaust you wish to achieve (that was a joke). Save your money and spend it wisely, you have to be patient, if you save for coilovers you will be very satisfied with you car! You could also get a test pipe which can be bough for about $100 on ebay which will give you a much louder exhaust note. Bottom Line Save your money and be patient, many of us on this forum have gotten ahead of ourselves and bought mods that we no regret buying and wish we had just saved up and done it right the first time! Best of luck on your build!

just do whatever you want. You can think long and hard about it but in the end you will go with your gut. Might not like it in a year or a day, but that's the best part about cars. EVERYTHING is reversible.

Good luck with the modding. I agree with a member above. I would try to get a set of coilovers asap, you can find some good deals, but make sure you buy from a reputable dealer or company.
I really hate the "dope" sticker, but like you said, you're 17, so I guess that's fine. I'm sure you have one of the nicer cars among your group of friends, so you got that going for you.
After you do the cc mod, also change up the front side-market reflector. Either paint-match it, or get clear or dark color sidemarker.
Looking forward to more pics etc.

1. If you don't want us to tell you our opinions on what we think looks and sounds good.... why bother asking?
2. You lost me after saying you didn't want to sound "ricey," but wanted your car to be as loud as possible.
If you wanted straight volume, you will be disappointed. Turbo's are not nearly as loud as NA cars. Straight pipe from the turbo?
Other than that, I couldn't read any further. I just... couldn't.
I'm not normally a mean person, but in all honesty - I doubt you will get along with the majority of people here.

Here's what I'm doing for my exhaust...I got Magnaflow quad tip mufflers for $310 shipped, a Eurocode test pipe for $40 shipped, so when my exhaust is done it will be about $450. About the cheapest you're going to find. You could also buy a test pipe and have an exhaust shop weld up a custom straight exhaust, I wouldn't do that, but it wouldn't be as much as a catback.

I would remove the plasti-dip...or just buy new rims. I don't like the stoke spokes. Just my opinion though, many do like them.
Agreed on the dope sticker (don't do it), but...it is your car so have fun!
good luck modding

I hope you know that pretty much any exhaust mod is borderline ricey. There's pretty much no way to make a stock 200hp 4 cylinder sound aggressive. Only way it will sound somewhat good is if you have a BT and some major ponies...

I know what you mean about the "border line ricey" but I don't really care about border line. I guess being a kid, ricey isn't bad like it is to the adults who think its "ruining the great beautiful cars" but growing up around need for speed's and fast and furious's, I can't say that I do not dislike ricers. Not that I encourage everyone to make their car one, and so i just like the sound of loud cars (probably shouldnt have got got a 4 cylinder), but hey that's just my 2 cents

huge difference between "ruining the great beautiful car" and laughing at the retard with a shitty sounding car. at 17 or 45, if your car sounds retarded, you look retarded. just trying to save you from some future ridicule, that's all

Okay seeing as your 17 and I'm 18 I can relate to you a lot... Coilovers is the best thing I've done to my car, that's the only way to make it look aggressive. Do what you want to do, it's your car, but if you want it to look good to other people you'll want it to look clean. Coilovers, nice set of rims, debadge, stage 1, CC mod, and exhaust if you have the money is what I'd go with. It's your car and your money and I wish you the best of luck.

See I wish I could agree with this but here's the thing. If he takes good advice, waits, and does things right. He can save himself some serious money. The money I've lost on mods I regret is absurd, and would have loved some really good advice early on.. Learning things on your own can be useful, but in this case its too expensive to be worth it.

Come off that way. I just want some excitement and well..noise. Obviously the more the better but not to make me look stupid. And I mean I know what will and what won't. I know what's too far and what's not noise wise but I'm not sure how to ACTUALLY ACHIEVE these results

I don't mean to sound stupid. I mean the reason I started to read on this site and eventually posted was to learn and figure things out. I don't know anyone else with an Audi and rarely ever see any (here in LA it's mostly big loud trucks) so its not like I have friends or anything that I can get opinions from. I hope "not all hope is lost" because I think y'all are just misunderstanding me. That's my fault cus idk all the car terms or whatever and like I said I'm new to this so the help is great. Even bad help. I'd like some answers that have actually answers and not opinions

At this point i think i will start by doing something to the exhaust. ABreeden had said he got a down pipe and pretty cheap magnaflow mufflers. my question now is this TOO cheap? i believe they were from ebay but any opinions going down this route? could i get the downpipe, install it on the stock exhaust and see what its like? seems like downpipes are pretty cheap and cannot hurt/eventually required when upgrading performance. ill search and find what downpipe would be the best and all
On a side note, i will eventually get coilovers just dont have the money at the moment. i do work in the summers so maybe by the end of summer ill have coil overs, rims, and a cupra lip. from what i hear and see, those will make the best exterior differences. not even going to start worrying about what rims or coilovers yet though

sounds like you have a plan, when you get to it do coilovers before rims... I made the mistake of doing rims before coilovers

Coming from another young member, the best thing you can do for your car right now is wait about six months before you even think about doing another mod to it. Do your research now so you won't have to spend another $1000 in two years when you get sick of your super load exhaust and realize that it's absolutely ridiculous on a small 4cyl engine.
I know you're young and stubborn so I don't expect you to hold off completely on the modding, so if you're going to fiddle with your car, keep the mods cheap and minimal right now. Window tint is a good one (please don't go under 20% or I can guarantee you'll be retinting your windows in a year), cupra lip is good, plasti-dip is great because it's reversible, debadge is necessary, RS4 swaybar is awesome, clear corner and colour matched sidemarkers are good because it'll teach you to take off your bumper and they look great.
I think you should wait about year and do tons of research before you invest into things like exhaust, wheels, suspension, chips, and RSN-E. They're all huge financial commitments and not something you want to be redoing in a years time. Save that money for the partying you'll be doing in college.
Things you mentioned that I think should never, ever, ever, ever be done to your car (or any car that doesn't belong to your worst enemy), ever:
- subwoofers/new stereo, audio system (you may not realize it now but when you have your music blasting and your windows down, people who you drive by will literally laugh at your naivety)
- stickers... especially the dope logo. Easiest way for real enthusiasts to spot "posers".
- tinted lights
- any body kit
- simultaneous cupra and votex (I literally laughed out loud when I read that)
You're lucky you live in L.A. because you have a great resource in that there are tons of Audi enthusiasts in SoCal. Do yourself a favour and GO TO A MEET. You'll meet some great people, see some great mods, get to listen to a bunch of different exhausts, and have people give you real live advise.
Oh and BTW, if you ever want to see a mod on your car before you fully commit to it, send me a PM and I can photoshop pretty well any exterior mod you want for you.
Oh and welcome to AZ and congrats on the great car at such a young age. [up]

thanks for the great advise. first off i meant Louisiana by LA not the La in California. BIGGG difference. no audi enthusiasts. anyway i dont have to worry about making bad choices now because, i have no money to do them. just a quick question though since you seem like the guy to ask, i would really like to add some sound to my exhaust. is starting with just a down pipe or test pipe a bad idea? i know a down pipe wont add much sound but if im correct (and may not be so feel free to correct me) the test pipe deletes the resinator? i dont think i have to worry about SMOG tests down here. is their one i should do first? or neither and save up for a full exhaust? thanks
ABreeden

Test pipe deletes the cat, not the resonator. Also, a test pipe will add more power than a catback exhaust will and a test pipe is only from $75-$300 new while a catback is $600-$1500.

I'm probably not the guy to ask on exhaust questions. I personally think that any exhaust on our tiny engine sounds absolutely terrible... reminds me of a civic. If I were to do anything, it'd be a HFC or testpipe as the most performance gains are to be had from those. If you want a real substantial sound diffference, save up and get a proper catback. Don't cheap out and settle for mufflers, it just screams poser to me.

Welcome!
Looking at your car definitely reminded me of the time when I first got my car not too long ago.
I was in the same position as you.
I went with the Lamin-X gun smoke tint, rocked those for half a year, and i definitely threw them away simply because I got so sick of the look.
One thing i regret was not going for the quad-tip exhaust. Definitely think that through so you don't regret.
This is my suggestion in terms of exterior mods:
1) Lower your car (whether it's coils or springs, whatever works for you) **** do this before new wheels because once you get new wheels on stock height, you'll look like an idiot and wish you lowered it first
2) New wheels (i'm sure this is self-explanatory)
3) any small add-ons/spoilers/lip that you want? (roof, trunk), S4 valence if you're going the quad exhaust look, S-Line valence for regular single tip (way more aggressive than non-sline valence), cupra lip?

1) Lower your car (whether it's coils or springs, whatever works for you) **** do this before new wheels because once you get new wheels on stock height, you'll look like an idiot and wish you lowered it first
2) New wheels (i'm sure this is self-explanatory)
3) any small add-ons/spoilers/lip that you want? (roof, trunk), S4 valence if you're going the quad exhaust look, S-Line valence for regular single tip (way more aggressive than non-sline valence), cupra lip?
I do plan on doing some of those small add ons such as lip and small trunk spoiler. After that probably something to the exhaust but am conflicted between so many options so it may be a few months. I'll just keep reading about the options. I would like a quad tip and new valence though? I like the looks of your car. Especially that front bumper

Thanks, yeah I had the opportunity to swap since I was in an accident.
Also a must-do DIY is the clear corner. it really isn't that hard, rather quite fun as well.
Hardest struggles for me when I did it was learning how to take off the bumper for the first time, took me a couple hours to figure it out, but nowadays it only takes me 10-15 mins.
Grab a heat gun, and go to town on those headlights. There's a DIY, the difference is almost night and day. (definitely get the chrome bulbs beforehand as they seem to be only available online).
Makes your front end so much more 'clean'

Asking peoples experience on a particular tire/wheel set up has nothing to do with destroying (in my opinion) a car. I will say what I please as it's an open forum.
Never did I say he was failing also. I said the car was. He wanted opinions and I think the car is heading in a horrible direction. He also got an attitude when other members gave their opinions. So yeah, I stand by what I said.
I'm also pretty sure there was a time when you were a brand new member.

People are still noobs in my book until about 1-year of membership.
But seriously guys, cut the kid some slack. Most people did and said stupid shit when they were 17, that's how they learn and become functioning adults.

I'm not saying I didn't.... I asked TONS of stupid ass questions... A4A4A4 was there for that (don't know if you remember that Cam haha) and I remember him being just as polite and reasonable as he is now. But I try to keep people from making the mistakes I did. No worries dude, I made worse decisions. Just read as many threads as possible, look through a lot of picture threads to see what you really like, and wait 6 months before you do ANY mod. That's the best advice I can give, especially based on my mistakes.

Ive decided i want to get a test pipe. i have many specific questions and just thoughts about which one, pricing, install, warnty, and most importantly is it a good starting mod? worth the money and will be able to contenue to mod the exhaust without any negative gains? example once i do this will i be able to eventuall add a downpipe, replace mufflers/tips. i know i can find alot of this on here by searching but some i cant. would it be advisable to start a new thread with only the test pipe in mind (unlike this thread thats pretty much about EVERYTHING)?

First step is don't start a thread. Second step is search. First go to the New Members FAQ. I guarantee there will be information on test pipes in there. If there aren't, use search and search for test pipes, again you'll probably find your exact question answered time and time again.

Test pipes won't generate s huge amount of sound, which is what I know you're after. They do however free up a fair bit of untapped power, which I personally think is a much better thing then sound anyway. They also allow you to go straight to stage 2 software when you do eventually get chipped. The downside to them is that you a) won't pass any emissions with it, and b) they give off an odor.
If you don't like the negatives I just mention you can get a high flow cat (HFC) instead, they make ever so slightly less power and sound and cost a touch more, but run much cleaner than the test pipe.
If you don't know already the exhaust is set up like this:
Manifold -> Turbo -> Catalytic Converter -> Downpipe -> Rest of Exhaust -> Exhaust Tips
So the test pipe you're looking at buying will replace the catalytic converter. Yes you could eventually change the downpipe and tips if you wanted but I think a better next step would be to just get a full catback exhaust (everything back from the catalytic converter). The full catback exhaust is where you'll hear the biggest difference in sound.
IMO, I think it would be just fine to do just the testpipe now, and then in a year or two, add on the full catback.
As for price, you're looking at $100-$200, you could probably buy used for a bit less. It really is just a pipe so there isn't much variation between brands; Eurocode, 034, etc... they're all good. I hope you're planning on installing it yourself, it'll be a good way to learn a bit about the underside of this car.

Which is perfect. You don't want your humble four door saloon to wake up the neighborhood at 3 a.m.. But with the test pipe you get the power gains, without the look at me sound of a ricer.

only thing holding me back from ordering one is
1)appears that it almost always causes a CEL without any chips or tunes (i think because of the 02 sensor)
2)Warranty. only being 17, my parents still pay the car bills. theres still one year left on the warranty and i dont want to screw that up, theyd be pissed. (not about the mod, but the warranty)

you will 100% get a cel without a tune. and another downside to test pipes is you will burn though rear 02 sensors faster. i killed mine right off the bat when the tp went in.

Same bro, I don't have just a whole bunch of money but working to save up some. Future planned mods that I want to do is Ksport Coilovers, Enkei 19 inch wheels, 034 Motorsports High flow racing CAT, Brembo big brake kit for front and rear, big brake rotor kit, (it's the GT series Brembo kits). So far look wise, I've blacked out my grill, besides the chrome trim, and managed to ding up my front driver side fender lol.
