View Full Version : DSG Problems hard shifting at low speeds

I read a lot of people are having hardshifting and uncomfortable engagement at heavy traffic and low speeds, nevertheless I don't seem to find any post on this forum.
The problem gets worse when the car has been spirited driven, when comming to a stop and engages from 2nd to 1st gear it shakes pretty bad, when you resume driving and press the gas pedal lightly 1st gear is very inconsistent it feels like stop and go, however if you push the pedal agressively it works ok.
I heard there is a TSB that addresses this issue with a software update but my dealer doesn't have any update available for my gearbox.
Can we do a DSG addaptation with VAGCOM?, are there any procedures?

I have the same exact issue on mine - only 800 miles on it so would assume it has the latest software. I am taking it in later this week and will see what the dealership has to say on the matter.

I had this issue for a while now, some say the mechatronic is faulty and I will need to get it replaced, but it costs US$ 8000!!! :S and that it only affects at some cars not all
Keep us posted on what the dealer says

i went to the dealer multiple times now. got the same answer both times.. they told me my car was still adapting the my driving habits. 10k later still have the same exact problems.. i was told by the service manager who also has a S4 that the "shaking" when coming to a stop could be the clutch disengaging. This shaking is def the most annoying! everytime i come to a stop the whole car shakes or chatters. i also do have a problem with the 1-2 shifts and i agree that it does get worse after spirited driving.

Tell your dealer you want the following TSB applied. This is copied from another thread titled "DSG Woes" and will be applied at my 5000mile service.
"Tranny hard shift 1-2 service update for mechatronic unit.
Just had the TSB below applied. Big difference... Do it!
37 Delayed accelerator response after cold start or Harsh 2-1 downshift

Interesting. I would think that for a TSB that was introduced in Jan 2011 a just purchased 2012 would have the latest software, but who knows...

Yah, go figure. :/
I had it (all symptoms in discussion) on my 2010, dealer replaced fuel injectors and mechatronic with approval from AUDI GMBH (for warranty claims), she now drives like an S4. :)

600 miles on my car now and almost all that was in the city. Only experienced this once, and I was in dynamic at the time.
Like someone mentioned, it's probably the computer learning our driving habits.

I was told that it is like that, we have to watch our foot and the hardest shift is when you come to a dead stop but dont let the car roll a few inches in 1st gear before you stop it jerks when you re-engage with the throttle. I can feather it a bit to better it but I just wish it would down shift a split second earlier that is all the problem is.

Had my 2012 with 950 miles on it at the dealership yesterday. They checked my latest software and claim it is all up to date and that any existing TSBs for this were for older version of the software. They did however include a TSB from Feb 2012 that basically states it is normal and will smooth out as the car adapts more to my driving habits. I only drive in Dynamic, so have not tried it in Comfort.

It seems to be the quirks of the DSG gearbox (there were days with my previous 6MT car where my shifting sucked). I experienced the DSG transmission in my father's S5 cab before I purchased my S4, so I was prepared for it not to feel like a traditional automatic...

I've taken my car in many times for this...it will click a lot and stuff, not really shake, but i didn't like the sound. i got 3 dealers opinions and all said that this was normal for the DSG

Im getting used the DSG being a little clunky. On the 2-1 shift I let the car roll a few inches inches in first before coming to a complete stop and I don't feel the clunk 100% of the time if I do this. What I am having to get used to, is allowing a second from releasing the break before I apply the gas. If I apply the gas to fast before the clutch engage it is clunky as well.. I find this to be more of a pain than the 2-1 shift.

im getting pretty hard shifting from 2-1 and 1-2 after some fun spirited driving. passengers get scared because they think something is wrong haha. i'm at the dealer as we speak and getting the updated tranny software done. they are aware of the issue

+1 2012 with 6000 miles. At the 5K service, dealer said there was no TSB to be applied. My car is very jerky in bumper to bumper traffic here in LA. I can feel the clutch abruptly engaging/disengaging between 1-2. Also had a very odd shift the other night when on dynamic at WOT, the car revved to 7400 then finally shifted. It's done this a couple of times when it's held the gear and not shifted at high RPM's. Will take it in again and get more insistent. Behavior is not normal.

yeah it gets me excited too

drove in 78n west traffic today... and its rather embarassing to have your car bog and hop.(espc since i have an automatic) and the down shifting is just plain uncomfortable for me. i took it to the dealer about 3000 miles back... they said the Wheel sensors? were bad so it made the transmission read diffrerent speeds. sounded like BS to me. So i drove for another 1000 miles or so until today i met some heavy traffic, didnt really have spirited driving prior to this. and like most hear same problem..shifting down 2 to 1 and accelerating 1 to 2. and on top of that i had all lights coming up on my dash.. TPS..PB light, ABS sensor light, almost every light came on and flashed for the entirety of the ride. bringing it back to the dealer tomorrow. [headbang][facepalm]

how is your car so far? i also have this jerky feeling from 2nd gear to 1st gear to a stop. now my car is at the dealer and maybe i could ask them to perform your tsb version on mine too if it fixed for you.

TSBs are just informational bulletins if a person experiences the issue. Since not everyone has this problem, or not everyone notices, they don't just automatically do it.

took my car to dealer and they refused to do the TSB because car has been flagged TD1. They even went as far as trying to charge my 2.5 hours labor for "diagnosing" the problem!?! i told them what the problem was and a simple flash would solve it. While i can see how they may say NO because of the TD1 but to try and charge me for labour to do absolutely nothing? ridiculous... Even if they offered to do it at a cost i would have been ok but to try and screw me like that... lets just say i wil not be going back. Time to go the GIAC DSG upgrade route and give my money to someone that actually cares.. FU Audi!

I had this problem, over time I simply adjusted my driving habits and that pretty much eliminated the issue. Other than that, the car seems to hold first gear much longer now, and doesn't get caught in a 1-2 shift when I'm rolling at low speed, so that is gone as well.

+1, except I got 2 dealers' opinions. One said nothing was wrong, the other did a software calibration. It did seem better, but now it's jerky again, especially in traffic when inching forward and then giving it throttle.

Sometimes if I'm in alot of stop and go traffic I will shift into neutral when coming to a stop. Eliminates a little bit of the clunkiness at low speed - the only catch is usually you have to apply the brake (lightly) to shift back into drive.

Some amount of jerkiness is normal from 1-2 and 2-1. Remember, it's really a manual (no torque converter), not a true automatic. The most common complaint involves stop-and-go traffic. If you touch the accelerator..... but hit the brake without ever leaving 1st, the car will shake a little. This is normal operation for the Audi DSG (Porsche's PDK does the same thing), and it is possible triggered by spirited driving.
There are a few different symptoms for when a Mechatronics Unit goes, but the two most common ones seem to be: (1) RPMs shooting up sharply when downshifting to first followed by a hard "bang", and (2) heavily delayed throttle response when you accelerate from a dead stop.
I've experienced what the OP mentions quite frequently and, for peace of mind, have run it by the technician as well. Normal operation.

The BMW M-DCT (same unit as several of the Ferraris) does it too. I just let the car roll to a stop in 2nd gear and then go down to 1st; the trans computer actually does the same thing in full-auto mode.

I would like some feedback on that also. Mine does the same exact thing. I was thinking it was the DSG mechatronics going bad but Dealer says everything is normal though..... just a glitchy tranny that is normal operation. Kind of crappy for a high end car IMHO. But I still love driving it!!

I do think this is just a DSG characteristic. My car does it and every DSG car I have driven does the same thing. I am hoping to go GIAC route soon that will get rid of that for me

How does going the GIAC route fix the hard downshifting and if they can lick it, why can't Audi?
Now I go to read about GIAC. Lol

Because Audi and GIAC have different priorities. Audi needs it to be usable by a huge range of people in different situations, and needs it to be reliable. GIAC is targeting performance-oriented users and isn't warrantying a multi-thousand dollar transmission on thousands of cars.

Now that I have had mine for over 6 mo I have learned how to approach lights and leave lights and not get it. Every now and then I still will get the hard shift.
The one that scares me is a few times I have gotten on the car and gone up a couple of gears then got out of it. When I did I got a very loud bang noise that I could feel in the car. Almost like the motor just fell out of the car. Can not get it to do it every time just seems that things happen just right and it does it. Scares the crap out of me every time.

I fixed the delayed throttle response with this:
Every time I come to a stop sign or red light, I just put the car into neutral and rev to 7k rpm..Then while I'm still revved to 7k, I put it into drive..it takes a second to go back into gear, but then the car starts moving. **

I really wish posts like this would be deleted. Not that I don't have a sense of humor, it just adds to the pile of bad information that can be found on the Internet, and isn't helpful to those who are looking for real answers. Then everyone gets upset when someone starts a new thread on a topic that's been covered a million times, cause they don't have time to sort thru the garbage.
Sorry, just saying.........
