I have owned an 2007 A4 2.0T for 3 years now. It has always been very slow from a dead stop to begin accelerating. Audi said this was normal for the turbo. I took it to a dealership to trade in on a new vehicle. They drove it and said the turbo is bad and it will cost 2000 to fix. Any idea what could cause this for the last 3 years. If it was truely bad I think I would have had bigger problems with the turbo by now. Any help will be appreciated.

Eh Check it yourself.....and if it is bad replace it yourself.....should not cost 2k to fix.....talk about stealership
they are trying to screw you with your trade.

Rebuild kit is $40 - $50 and will take you a couple hours but these are pretty simple to rebuild. You have 2 options as I see it:
1. Invest the cash and man-hours, OR
2. Walk away from a place that may very well be trying to cheat you
It could be that they are knowing trying to cheat you, which means any chance they'll get, you'll be SOL, or the mechanic is so bad/unfamiliar with turbo vehicles that he shouldn't be allowed to walk near them, and any car you buy from there will have that same level of care.
In short.... find another place to deal with and don't look back. Do us all a favor and let us know the name of the place too.

Even in stock form, diverter.valves can go bad. Check all the normal stuffs that us tuned guys do. Coilpack recall, pcv recall, spark plugs, dv, n80, etc. Find a local guy with a vag com and do some logging. Highly unlikely that your turbo is actually bad on a stock car.

Yeah, what JR said.
Turbos generally only go bad on people who have done work on their car and push them harder than normal drivers...
My journal bearings recently went (and subsequently replaced the turbo) but thats most likely due to the fact I have st2, few mods, and drive my car too aggressively.
I also do not have a turbo timer and having that excess boiling hot oil sitting inside the turbo didn't really help my cause.

Can you verbatim tell us how they determined it to be bad. Like removed and checked, bench tested... You would be blowing lots of smoke for a majority of the causes that determine a turbo "bad"

Reasons for turbo to be bad without obvious symptoms other than loss of power.
Ceased turbine/compressor shaft
Fins sheared off
Faulty wastegate
Excessive carbon buildup in housing?
Hole in housing (loud hiss)
Those would be some impressive things to not notice after 3 years... Even if it was like that to begin with.
Not to mention how odd it would be for those things to not destroy the turbo completely over time...

200hp struggling to move 3500 lbs [>_<]
IF your turbo really is bad, they have used ones in the classifieds for $350 and IF you want to upgrade it, you have a "reason" to get a bigger turbo.

specifically, what is bad, what exactly were they quoting you?
saying your turbo is bad is like your mom saying her computer is slow and demanding you fix it over the phone.

Hehehehe I love having that excuse....
"well shit... its going to cost me $2000 from the dealership to swap the turbo, might as well spend $2300 and do it myself with bigger and better!!!"
