View Full Version : What to log before and after tune

I just got my vag-com cable and will be taking my car to a shop to get the APR intake, tune, and CPS on Wednesday. What parameters would be of interest for me to log before and after the tune? I still have to figure out how to use the software because all I've done is check out the engine fault codes, so any hints, tips, and links would be appreciated. I'm assuming I can make the fancy graphs I've seen posted with the software. If not, then I'll need to figure out how to feed the data into excel to make some graphs.

If anyone is in the greater Sacramento area and wants to join me to lend their expertise or learn with me they're welcome. I should be available for most of the long weekend.

Thanks,
-Skid

I failed in my first attempt, but found this handy set of instructions and will give it another shot.

Now that I'm searching more diligently, I'll include what I think to be helpful information.

With our cars, which are UDS based, you can only log via advanced meauring blocks.

Just go into that screen and select the measuring blocks in the pop up window that you would like to log. You are limited to a maximum of 12. Once selected make sure you go to the top left and select the "group UDS requests" check box. It will increase the data logging rate substantially.

Here are some good blocks to use:

Record once before run:
128 - Ambient Pressure

Blocks I personally like to use:
22 - Throttle Position - Normed
35 - Engine Speed
292 - Timing Retard Cyl 1
293 - Timing Retard Cyl 2
294 - Timing Retard Cyl 3
295 - Timing Retard Cyl 4
296 - Timing Retard Cyl 5
297 - Timing Retard Cyl 6
298 - Ignition Angle
421 - Mass Air Flow
436 - Boost Pressure (absolute) **
710 - Boost Control Valve Angle **

Some other interesting ones are"
632 - Intake Air Temperature
702- Boost pressure specified.

Even more helpful.

Is the location table value from the advanced measuring blocks area the same on all our cars? That's a huge table and I found that the numbers under the loc column weren't the same as the block values indicated in the other posts I linked to here. It will be a pain in the ass if I have to search that list every time I wanted to log some data.

Doing the 0-60 acceleration runs are a cool feature though. I wasn't on a straight stretch of road and don't know how to properly launch a 6mt, but I did get 5.0s on my second try. I still didn't log any data though because I didn't find many of the blocks mentioned above in the advanced measuring blocks list. I'm thinking that some of the blocks were in the abbreviated notation with the underscores and I simply didn't understand it.

i love the conversation you are having with yourself [:D]

I tend to do that when I don't get responses from others. If nothing else, when I eventually get this all figured out I will have posted it all here and hopefully that will help someone else. :D

This thread has some good info on logging:

It would be nice to add some APR v2 logs to the graphs.

I have an issue though. I can select all my parameters to monitor and see them changing on the main window, but when I click the log button, it just hangs there and doesn't respond. If I go to the task manager and click end task, it will then go to the screen to select a log name, but all the values of the parameters it was monitoring go to N/A. Is there a critical set up step I need to take so that it will let me select a log file name and then populate it with the data?

I'm using Windows 7 on an Ultra Book. I have another core i7 laptop with Vista on it that I could try, but the battery life on the Ultrabook is preferable and considering that it is brand new, I think the core i5 processor in it should be fast enough to handle the logging.

I had a similar problem, it was the "turbo" mode that caused it. Whenever I had turbo option checked, it would freeze as soon as soon as I clicked log. I would have to end task and the whole program would shut down. If I didn't check turbo, it worked fine. I'm running an older core 2 duo laptop.

I emailed Ross Tech customer support, and they replied quickly with several suggestions, but I never tried any of it because I was ultimately able to get a decent sample rate by just using the "group uds" option.

Try emailing Ross Tech, they seem pretty helpful.
