So what are safe power levels for a stock bottom-end? Looking for 300 @ the crank, is it safe?

300 at the crank is more than safe. You just need to be cautous of high torque spikes, because that is what will do your connecting rods in. Rest of the block is rather stout (other than connecting rods, the rest of the black can be pushed to over 500chp). But 300chp will be just fine on the stock block. It is when you reach the 300whp mark that you should worry and consider doing a minimum of forged connecting rods.
