Well I guess I'll start a build thread...

Story so far:

I've had my 2001.5 Silver S4 for about 3 years now.. bought it bone stock with 95k miles on it. By 110k miles it was full stage 3, with a custom tune from JHM, running meth, put down just over 400whp on 034's dyno. A few months ago I started having some smoking issues during decel along with some oil burning. Tried a bunch of fixes to no avail, most likely culprit was the valve stem seals leaking. So I decided to pull the motor. Started a few weeks ago (first motor pull), and I have another car to drive so I just took my time. As of last Sunday, the motor is out and I have started to break down the motor.

Turbos have been selected and paid for... should be here within a few weeks and they aren't 605s.

Have to wait until Tuesday to get the head bolt tool from the local Snap-On guy, then the heads will be pulled.

Wanna sell your K04's?

Yes, they will need to be rebuilt. They are not blown and had no issues when pulled but there is some shaft play and I would not put them back in without a rebuild. I have someone local that has dibs on them but send me over an offer and if it falls through we can work something out.

No, they are fixed back. I believe they are called Momo Evo RS GTs... weigh about 30 lbs each.

What led you to think your valve seals were leaking?

What led you to think your valve seals were leaking?

I had whitish-clear smoke only during decel or cruising down hills, and was burning more oil than usual. No smoke under boost, no turbo whine, no loss of power. Pressure tested and found no leaks, no codes, replaced spider hose with no change, compression test checked out fine. Talked with a few different mechanics and a few knowledgeable people within the B5 S4 community and only thing we could come up with was leaky valve stem seals.

If it turns out that that isn't what was going on, oh well...

Looking good Brian!

You won't really be able to inspect the valve stem seals with the valvetrain installed, but a leakdown test on the head will show an issue.

You can rotate the cam till you can see up a valve stem and try to see if there is evidence of oil burning. However its probably unlikely more then a few of them were leaking, if that.

Make sure you take your heads somewhere that is familiar with 5v heads.

01-19-2012, 07:17 PM
What are people paying to have their heads rebuilt? The machine shop told me my heads need new valve stem seals, guides, 2 intake valves and all 12 exhaust valves.. the quote was around $1500... ouch!

2380S4
01-19-2012, 08:06 PM
That's not horrible, depends on parts being used.

I spent $200 on just having valves on brand new heads lapped. On top of the cost of a full 2.8 head build with super tech.

034Motorsport
01-20-2012, 11:12 AM
I still think you should get some upgraded exhaust valves, but from a financial standpoint, grabbing some 2.8 heads or that motor you found might be your best bet. But with 605's, it would be nice to rev to 7000rpm or higher without worry of your old hollow exhaust valves busting.

MikeyB3
01-20-2012, 11:39 AM
Wow, your pistons look just as bad as mine did!

As far as head building, 1500 seems a little low, but I guess it depends on how far they're building... Mine was way more than that. Then again, I had a P&P done and had them completely rebuilt.

Did you decide on which turbos you're going with?

I think I am gonna go with the SS Supertech exhaust valves with the Black Nitride coating.

The $1500 would include disassembly, valve job, all new valve stem seals, all new guides, (12) new exhaust valves and (2) new intake valves, reassembly.

As far as turbos, I really would like to go Tial 605, just not sure if funds will permit.

I dont know parts/labor rates, but I'd say if that's where you're headed, sounds about right.

Are you doing rods? If funds are right, do what you plan to do. But if you're a little low, I've ridden in/driven an RS6 car without rods, and on a moderately conservative tune. She's quick, man. Feels stockish in drivability, but way more push.

That's a very competitive price for all of that, I'd say go for it but get the supertech exhaust valves.

I'll probably end up running a stock airbox with 034 85mm MAF and 034 silicon accordian. The RS4 intake stuff I have is setup to be used with a 90mm MAF

labor was $1100, the guy gave me a little bit of a deal since I paid cash. I'm not exactly sure what they did with the intake valves but I know 2 needed to be replaced and I had that done.

So I used about as much force as I could, remember this is with the motor out of the car so its much easier, and got the coilpacks to seat a little further down... still doesnt seem like it should be that difficult because now the coilpacks are nearly impossible to remove... I thought this mod was suppose to make changing coils/spark plugs way easier?

Brian and I chatted on the phone earlier and hopefully things got straightened out.

They are a very tight fit to keep things sealed and to make sure they don't ever pop out.

For anyone else reading this, it helps to lubricate them with a solvent or something that will evaporate quickly but help you get them in. Rotate them back and forth while applying pressure till you get down to the notches, and then they need a good bit of force to drive them home.

Good read. Its a good thing your doing this before me cuz RS6rs are right in my wheel-house after Dru from JHM saving me on the freeway. Will be pulling my engine in the next few weeks. why .040? and why do so many others gap down to .024 - .028? For education purposes...namely mine.

people gap down with the stock coilpacks, but with the 2.0T they allow you to run a larger gap. INA runs a .040" and they said they have had people go as big as .044". A larger gap allows for a hotter spark which promotes more complete combustion resulting in more power.

I think 605's have bit more topend power in them then a straight RS6 and an RS6-R would probably be (wonder when we finally get the specs) a Hybrid RS6 like a Loba LO600 so comparable or slightly bigger then a S605

Well when I first posted those pics, JHM had not released any photos of the turbos and asked me not to myself. They have since posted pics on their facebook so I assume it is ok for me to post pics. You can see some of the turbos in the last pics I posted. I have some others I will post soon...

^ I installed a set of rp's on my buddies s4 a couple yrs ago. He got them from the group buy & they were a pain to make everything line up for the line brackets & the inlet piping. He later sold it when he heard about the bearing issues because he didn't want to go through the hassle of pulling the motor, dealing with rp & paying for labor again. A 4 week job (waited unroll motor was pulled to order parts) turned into a 10 month project that he kept for 3 months! I've talked to few tuners, some being a friend at 034, mark at autospeen & a independent shop owner/drag racer who have said the Chinese casting are ok as long as you don't get to aggressive & run too lean. Then they heat up too much & fail.

Hey Brian - Sorry for the thread-jack but I need to address some of the false statements in these posts.

Here are the facts regarding JHMotorsports and RP Turbos:

RP Turbo originally approached us to have us test fit a set of these turbos on one of our shop’s B5-S4s.

We agreed, and test fit a set of RP’s K04s on our cars. They worked great.

After this confirmation, we sold over 50 sets of RP K04 Turbos.

Out of all the sets of RP K04s that we sold, there was a little over a 10% failure rate overall. This was due to one bad batch of turbos.

At the same time, OEM Borg Warner K04 turbos were experiencing the same failures. Both failures were caused by bad seals. RP Turbo was using the same OEM seals as Borg Warner was.

JHM was not and is not, the only company selling RP K04 turbos. ECS and CTS are just two of several vendors who “pushed these turbos [as] hard” as we did. Both companies also continue to sell these turbos.

When the warranty claims occurred, we were not able to get RP Turbo to handle the warranties fast enough. Some customers had to wait several months before RP would handle their claims. At this point, we stopped selling RP Turbos. We had several notes on our website about these turbos and whenever our Sales Staff was asked about them on the phone, we tried to guide them away from these turbos.

Within the last year or so, we have started to sell these RP Turbos again. RP has told us that they went back and addressed their issues. We haven’t had any issues or claims on these turbos since we started re-selling them.

Why the JHM RS6-R Turbos are different:

We have been installing, testing, and enjoying modified, OEM RS6 turbos since late 2007. We have several cars with these turbos on them, some with 70,000 to 80,000 miles on the turbos. We have had excellent results with OEM RS6 turbos in terms of power and streetability. Unfortunately, full RS6 Turbo Setups (heavily modified, OEM turbos with inlets, hardware, etc…) would cost $3500 to $3600. About two years ago, there were also bolt-on, big turbo setups that would cost the same as OEM RS6s or sometimes less. Since we had a lot of experience with bigger turbos (GT28s and the like), we didn’t feel these setups would be a good fit for our customers or the market, which consisted of mostly street-driven cars. At this time, we decided that RS6 based turbos would offer the best, all-around street performance but the only options out at the time were too expensive.

It was because of those factors and our success with these OEM RS6 turbos, that we started developing our RS6-Rs through our own, DIRECT manufacturer. Working directly with the manufacturer throughout the entire process has allowed us to have more control over the design, manufacturing, production, and supply of the product. This will allow us to serve our customers’ needs better should any issues arise.

For more information about these turbos please see our product page here: http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/jhm-rs6-turbo-kit-for-27t-p-18.html. We're getting ready to drop the price and do a full release shortly.

RS6 hotsides. If the housings were OEM Im sure JHM would say this but it doesn't mean they are chinese or otherwise bad. JHM should tell us more about the compressor wheel specs. The biggest wheel is 2280 what you can put in the compressor housing without boring out the inlet so I'd say if its a true custom wheel it is similarly sized. 2280 inducer/excuder are 44,8/59mm. That been said I'd say these will out flow the S605 or at least the same. And 360 degree thrust bearing is a must when boosting up to 30psi (S605 only have 270deg bearing).

BlkdoutA4: Good luck with your build. This car is going to be fast!

-Jhms site states how every single piece on these RS6R's is european or usa made/assembled... if you look a few posts up, youll see JHM stating that NOTHING IS CHINESE MADE...
*does this mean you bought them from a vendor in europe whom buys them from china?

why do chinese rs6's use the same EXACT banjo fittings, tag plates, & castings. rs6 frankens look very similar...

just be honest & prove me wrong, who cares if they come from China if they work...

I've been in the car plenty of times with Dan, but thank you for the offer.

I'm more curious to get a ride in Brian's specific car. I have extensive logs and experience with Brian's car when it was on K04s as I lived in Santa Cruz the last 8 years, but I primarily would just like to feel what his particular car feels like after this upgrade.

Jason's car is very, very fast, but it's pretty maxed out in a lot of respects. I've yet to experience a stock motor RS6-R car and Brian will have to drive right past us so.... =D

I'm anxious to see how this car runs with the RS6-Rs. I have a set waiting to be installed as well:

Any idea how about how long it'll take to get the rest installed for you? My car has been in the shop for almost 6 months...

Were those K04s still blowing just fine? You sold them I'd imagine right? Just wondering how many pennies I can collect when I sell my K04s next year.

Ya they were still working fine when I pulled them. One side had some slight shaft play. I think I sold them for like $1250... Can't really remember

Nice. You're definitely going to have yours before I have mine.

While the car is at JHM getting tuned, I've started to reassembly my Fikse's... (Sorry for the shitty cell phone pic and bad garage lighting)

Like the color on the fikse's. They are one of my top 10 wheels I'd like to own. Can't wait to see the car up and running.

Ya, I think they should look nice on the car. I'll probably run them for a while and then sell them... who knows

Meh. Was there yesterday, headed down the road and decided my old VAST tune and supporting fueling was not going to cut it :banghead:. Turned around and left it there for them to tune and replace a few of the fueling items such as injectors, maf and plugs. They fully recommended doing so but I guess I had to be convinced.

Looks like you're going to beat my "before Halloween" finish date. Good luck!
