I want to put in an actual dipstick so I don't have to deal with the MMI oil display, but ECS is back ordered till Feb. Contacted the dealer near me and they have it in stock but they're saying the part# is 06E 115 611H which is different from what ECS lists (06E 198 045). Can anyone clarify?
Also, the guy told me that I can't leave it in, which doesn't make sense to me and I'm pretty sure those of you that have it leave it in. He said it's just to check the oil and then recap. Anyone have any input?
Thanks.

Bunch of crap dealer is telling you, left mine in for well over a year with no issues whatsoever. Not sure about those part #s but if you really want it I would wait till Feb since you might get that typical dealer markup.I paid almost $12 for the dipstick at ECS.

So long as it has the same rubber gasket to seal it in the neck that the plug has, there is no problem - many here have it and run with it in there. I know the ECS is the correct part though, they use OEM parts and are pretty tight with the supply lines and ensuring things. I have had my parts dept order me a S4 front filler plate and it was for the A4 when it showed up. They were like "A and S use the same part," Sorry buddy, but totally different grills and parts that fit on them.
Personally I would trust ECS over a dealer parts dept most every time.

http://genuineaudiparts.com - That's where I got mine. Got it for $19. The one I order and works for my 2012 S4 is the same one the dealer gave you (06E 115 611H).

The dipstick ECS sells is an Audi part. It can be kept in the car at all times. Audi part number and ECS part number can obviously be different. I never take mine out. It is plastic and will not melt or deteriorate from the heat of the oil

I got mine here. A few bucks more, but in stock. Dealers didn't want to sell me a dipstick for some reason. One dealer wanted to sell me one for $37 and I had to order it.

This. Never had an issue with ECS, have had plenty with my dealer's parts department.

The part we use is the same dipstick that comes in the A6 3.0T (same motor as the S4) So as long as the part is for a 3.0T engine it will work.
