View Full Version : Power steering fluid?

Does anyone know if it is possible to burn the stuff off? Does it ever get hot? I am having to top of my power steering fluid every other month.....I am 99% sure it isn't leaking anywhere and have been checking. The manual says not to crack the wheel fully to one side or the other for 5 seconds and it can damage the pump (how so?), and while I don't for that long, I do have to crank it and hold it for 1-2 seconds everyday to get out of my garage and around 3 other cars.
On a side one, the pump makes the RPMs jump and drop when fully cranked like I've never seen on any other car...

Power steering fluid never really gets "hot" anywhere in the system.
If you are loosing it, it's leaking, my mk4 leaked at the steering rack/tie-rods, filled the rubber boot up before I could tell where it was coming from.
Either that or you got a fine split in one of the rubber lines somewhere and you are only loosing it hard under real pressure. Are you using the good stuff for PS fluid? Pentosin or what ever OEM?

Have a 500ml white container of the OEM stuff, cost me about $20 at the dealer if I recall correctly. I just check this today and after 30 minutes of driving, the cap does get hot to the touch and so was the fluid...Hot enough to burn some off? I don't know enough about its properties to say so....
On the other hand, it could be pooling somewhere within the lower parts of the engine bay and I just just not know about it.

Speaking of which, my fluid was kind of low so I went to a local parts store to get some Pentosin brand fluid because the big chains like O'Reilly or Kragen doesn't carry them. The guy looked up my Yr/Mdl and handed me a tin quart of Pentosin CHF 202. I'm not sure what the difference is but according to the system it is compatible with Audis between 2006-2010. I'm not sure what the original grade was, all it says on the filler cap is to use only 'Mineral Hydraulic' fluid, so therefore I bought it. I've been reading conflicting reports about how one shouldn't be mixing one Pentosin with another Pentosin, and others say it is okay, so what is it? Should I be concerned because I've already added a couple of tablespoons to the reservoir.
