do people usually charge $$ for a ECU upgrades (by which i assume you mean a flash)? i was always under the impression the 5 minutes it takes to load a new file on the ECU was free... definitely has been for me, and i've been flashed 3 times haha

Technically they don't charge you, but the dealer still has a profit margin so they make money off of it.

if i took my car someplace where they tried to charge me for a tune i would laugh at them and take it someplace else. A co-worker tried to get unitronic license for his performance shop and im pretty sure it came out to about $349/tune from Unitronic and then retail is $550.....assuming APR is about the same, there is no reason a shop should charge for labor. you really dont do anything when flashing it anyway.

Most of the new ECU's require removal from the vehicle to program and that's why many charge labor.
