View Full Version : Carbon Cleaned + ECS Underdrive Pulley + Check Valve + Plugs = WOOT!

I haven't posted a thread in a while but felt compelled today. Just got some work done from Billy @ Athans Motors (Renn Art Owner) and I'm very pleased so I wanted to share. I'm at 62k and figured it's about time to get a manual carbon cleaning. In doing so, I decided to throw on a few other bolt ons:

- ECS Pulley
- HPFP.com 142 bar check valve
- OEM plugs (replaced NGKs Iridums with 20k)

I also wanted the excessive idle vibration fixed which got worse recently after a visit to the dealer. They changed my engine mounts under CPO warranty and the vibration got real bad, borderline unbearable. I even complained to AoA and they were not much help. Athans Motors hooked it up by aligning all the mounts and torquing the bolts properly while car was in idle.

Overall Results: I really feel the stage 2+ now. Moar power all around and the throaty sound is back. The acceleration is so much better that I realized my stock sport suspension is almost shot. The idle vibration is nearly gone and I'd say it's better than the day I bought it used (40k).

EDIT: Pics Posted of before and after the carbon cleaning. The before pics show the valves soaking in cleaner.

Consider doing the BG induction cleaning service on a somewhat regular basis. It'll help keep the valves and such cleaner, and extend the time between having to do the physical cleanings.

Carbon cleaning.... mmmmm. Been on my mind lately as I'm at 61k. Need more money first.

Thought about it but I'd rather pay the $400 once a year or so for a manual cleaning. Until I see some real before/after pics of BG on a 2.0T, I'm not convinced it does much.

What does the ECS underdrive pulley do? Notice any benefits after the install?

Reduces rotational mass. Less rotational mass = increase in power.

Wow, that's a good video. There really was a big difference in that video. Can I post this in the BG group buy thread?

Where can one get a manual cleaning done? ... do dealerships do this?!

Yeah the dealerships can do it. They quoted me 5 hours for the manual cleaning...

Yeah, it's not cheap at all. Definitely 500-1000 if you want to pay for it. Otherwise, you can do it yourself for like $25.

Chris, are you an 05.5? I am at 114k without ever a cleaning, and nothing feels wrong. I'm sure there must be some shit all over in there, but I can't imagine the car running any better than it does now.

Why are our 05.5s so much more dependable than newer models? You, me, Jeff. Everyone I know with an 05 has had very few problems compared to the newer models.

JR.... from some of my readings back in the day when I first bought my 2.0t there were a few dealers that said hard or spirited driving where the engine gets hot can help against carbon build up. I can only imagine you drive your car as hard as I drove my A4, which is why some people don't have problems. The A4 driver that does not "beat" on his car probably has more build up.

That too. I have also read beating on the car is actually good for it. I don't redline it or anything, but I definitely like to get into full boost for every gear change when possible. I blame my exhaust for making me want to hear it.

I ride mine hard so it gets hot every drive and maybe due to the early roll out they used smaller/better volume parts and just tried harder since it was important to make a good showing early with customers and critics.

If anyone lives near northeast PA .. I'd rather pay you a couple bucks to do it.. I don't feel like doing it myself nor taking it to the dealership.

What exactly was the procedure they've used to clean the carbon? And if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for aligning the motor mounts?

x2. 05.5 ftw !

still surprised at how well my stock prv handles my 130bar fuel pressure request.
i got carbon cleaned at around 80k and there was a ton of gunk in there. but i couldnt really tell a difference in performance after. cost me about $500

If you have balls and 25$ check out my helpfull guide with the updated PDF. For removing the manifold.

I still am very skeptical that a BG cleaning does anything, spend some time knuckle deep in carbon gunk and continuously blasting it with
Brakleen or card cleaner to no avail and you will understand the manual clean site only way :-/

Also the under drive made a good difference in response for me.
