How does a plasti-dipped wheel hold up to road debris? Does it protect a wheel from wheel rash? (I mean - it has to - but how much?) How many layers do you typically apply?

Dipped wheels hold up great against road debris. I have had my wheels dipped for just under a year now - without touching them up or respraying - and there arent any scratches or chips at all. Looks the same as it did when I applied it.

I usually suggest a minimum of 4 layers per wheel.. but when I dip wheels for people I personally do 5. The first layer being a very thin dusting.

As far as wheel rash - it really depends on the severity of the contact. Yes, it will take the damage for the wheel on a light grazing of a curb.. but as you could imagine, if the impact is great enough - there isn't much the dip can do.

So are you able to mask over the plasti dip pretty easily without worry about it coming up when you pull it off?

You mean mask over the PlastiDip with tape? Yes.. the painters tape sticks to the dip, and then comes right off without disturbing the dip.

Is the glossifier similar to a clear gloss Plasti-Dip? I hear DIY clearbra written all over that! Most likely not for the areas where you would want the perfect finish, but areas of the lower front splitter, behind wheels, rocker panels, diffusers, track days....

The Glossifier is brand new - just released Dec 5th. Totally different than the Clear Plastidip. The Clear Plastidip has a matte finish - this provides a clear, wet, gloss finish.

Much more examples, tutorials, ect to come.

So in Psalm40s scenario, if you want to apply it like a clear bra to various parts of the car, do you spray on the clear Plasti Dip first and then apply this glossifier on top of that to get the shine?

You got it my friend. 3 coats of clear followed by 3 coats of gloss

The Dip lasts quite a long time. I've personally had wheels dipped for about 9 months.. with the color and texture looking the same as it did the first week. I just give my wheels a gentle wash with soap and water once a week.

Giving my black dipped wheels a gloss coating this weekend - pics and video will be up ASAP

how does the dip hold up to high pressure wash from car washes?

Low psi pressure washers, from a normal distance - it's fine. Close distance, or high psi washers - you could run into trouble. I usually tell customers to steer clear or wire brushes or pressure washers.

Fonz-
We need to see some work with the Metalizers....maybe a gunmetal wheel with a coat of silver metalizer/glossifier? I am looking for something like the stock 2009 GT-R wheel. It is a metallic flake high-gloss gunmetal colour. It would be for my winter OEM Ti package wheels so I want it cheap/reversable/durable for snow and salt. Thanks!

Wow you're freaking me out. My first metalizer project is on a Gunmetal S4 OEM wheel - with silver metal flake. It's drying at my shop as we speak! Pics probly up tomm. I'm planning on posting a DipYourCar.com Intro post - quickly showcasing each product.

Good stuff man. I see gunmetal on those wheels. Your site only sells red black and white for the wheel package, any chance of getting gunmetal in there?
Either way I think I am plasti dipping my wheels the coming summer and would most likely buy the kit from you.

Now this I like.

Or I might contemplate redoing all the interior trim bits with gloss gunmetal. The effort in removing (or masking?) all the pieces is a bit of a concern, though.

The Gunmetal Wheel kit goes up very soon! I needed to make sure enough Gunmetal was pre-mixed before I made it available on the site.

First of all, congrats on the banner.
I have to say the gunmetal plastidip is looking very nice and i might do my stock 19" RS4 with that one day (if i can find a matching winter set for it :s ).
The bad news is and how do i say this in a good way...imho gloss needs a super flat surface to make it look ok. Not sure if it is the plastidip ground color or the gloss plasitip itself, but that is a bit of a fail in my eye.
Never the less, i'm sure it can have its purpose on other not so visible places.
Anyway, dip ahead!

I wouldn't call it a fail, its just not as nice as real gloss wheels of course. What do you expect? Its pretty impressive looking for coming out of a spray can and being able to peel it off at whim.
I do prefer the non gloss though (at least on gunmetal).

Hope to see a lot more comparison pics of this gloss vs non gloss on all other colors.

Keep em comin Fonz!

Well the peel off is indeed a great feature of the plastidip. But wondering, can you use a regular gloss spray paint (and even color paint) on plastidip or will that fight with the plastidip paint itself? Just asking, maybe it gives better results (maybe enough coats will make it all more flat). In the end everything can still be ripped off.

I have tried spraying clear coat over black plastidip. The result was a coat that was rather difficult to begin peeling, and once done so left a grayish color underneath the black. It looked as if the clear coat reacted with the plasti dip and changed the peeling properties of it. I've only done this once and it was only 1 coat of black plasti dip with 1 coat of clear over it,

This may be different with more coats of plast dip but I didn't like what I saw after peeling it off so did not ever attempt to do it again.

I believe plasti dip should not be mixed with regular spray paint, but Fonzie should know the facts.

I've tried spraying clear coat, clear enamel, spray paint, engine paint and spray paint for plastics over PlastiDip - none with great results.

I'd assume with enough coats of dip down first, there are ways to make it work.

hi i just had a question... im going to be plasti dipping my peelers since its spring time and im going to be swapping wheels figured itd try dipping them to see how they look before i put em on the car.
anyway so Im going dip my peelers matte black and coat em with 4 - 5 coats of glossifier, did a bit of research looks like a clean wet finish so im willing to try it out , my only concern is , if you glossify does it make it THAT much harder to peel off ? or is it just the same thing with or without glossifier in terms of removing the plasti dip

thank you

Fonz,
I'm going to dip my wheels in red, but I'm not a fan of the 'muted' red that comes from the can.. Maybe it's just pictures on the Internet?
but I want a striking 'Ferrari' or 'fire engine' red. Any other shades of red available that I just have not come across?
I really would like a red like this:
