View Full Version : 3.2Q Tip Problems, car won't move!

So after leaving work the other evening, my car starts to rev and I notice that I'm soon coasting to a stop!
I pull over to shut it off and let it sit and the car is completely immobile. It runs great, sounds fine, but will NOT move.. Like the engine and transmission are not connected. I scanned the car and it gets NO codes.. It's stuck!!
This happened after setting it down for the first time after my coilover install, but after sitting for 10 minutes was back to normal..
I purchased the car less than 5k ago with 50k on the clock, it is an 05.5 A4 3.2 Q Avant with 6 Speed tiptronic..
I plan on following Phil's DIY this week for filter and fluid change, but until then I'm curious to hear if anyone else has seen anything similar?
I've been searching all night to no avail! Do these cars even have a torque converter!?!

Back to the point at hand...
Don't have a solution to your problem but at least I can answer one of your questions: yes, it does have a torque converter. It is a tiptronic, not to be confused with a DSG or CVT, neither of which has a torque converter.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks Cleaver,
I'm 90% sure it's a tip, since it is a B7 Quattro and neither the window sticker now anything else has indicated it to be DSG or CVT..
The problem is very frustrating and the car rolls freely even in Park! I always heard the quattro setup was much better than the CVT which is completely why I bought this one or a similar sedan!!!
Need some more info on the way our TqC works as well, something about an oil pump? Can't find any definitive information..

If you change the gears (say going from like reverse to drive or park to drive, you know...) can you hear anything in the transmission moving. Sometimes if i dont let my car warm up entirely and throw it into gear *while holding down the break* i feel a slight jerk which at least lets me know the transmission has selected a gear, sometimes i can hear it too...

If you have steering wheel paddle shifters, you have Tip.

No paddles, just the tip shifter.. If you have paddles can't you also have CVT or DSG as well?
When I shift from R to P, I get an unusual spinning sound that I'd never heard before, but when shifting from P to anything else it seems as if its going into gear, just not mating with engine.. Even when I rev in D it shifts into 2 and 3.. No luck when putting it into Tip mode either..

Still have no answer to your problem, but I can definitely say if you have a non-manual 3.2 quattro then you have a torque converter equipped tiptronic. CVT is for front-drive only, and DSG is simply not available for the A4. BTW, paddle shifters came with 2006+ S-line and 2007+ 3.2.

No NO NO! Tip doesn't have to have paddles! Guys this is a 3.2, of course its not a CVT. And jesus christ an A4 has never had a DSG. GOOD GOD! So much fail.
OP, this problem sounds REALLY unusual. Theres a known issue with the Tip on the 2.0t where the torque converter slips a little while under constant light loads but this sounds much more serious. Try to get a hold of a vagcom, or at the very least a code scanner from an autoparts store. There could be a code. It sounds like something is broken with the tranny, especially if the trans is shifting through the gears while in drive yet the car isn't moving. If you can, have a friend put it into drive and give it some gas while you look underneath the car to see if anything (driveshafts, axles, etc.) is spinning. Any clunking noises?
Honestly you might want to flatbed this to a shop, a dealer if you have a warranty left.
Edit: Damn you Cleaver, beat me to it!

That is what I figured, a CVT was not Quattro! And even though it lacks paddles, I didn't think these were available DSG..
I did scan the car with VAG immediately following but received NO codes..
I'm going to get the car up and did a Fluid change and at least check for fluid inside..
Odd because the last time it did this, it was suspended up at an angle for quite a while a couple months ago.. But it did this briefly and went back to normal..
I'll post back when I check the fluid this week, thanks for everyones help!

Tiptronic did have paddles as an option but very few cars are equipped with it...
