3 inch downpipe illegal?

I tried to get a muffler shop to make me a 3inch downpipe and the guy said he would only go up to 2.5 inches. This sucks because the stock exhaust on the b8 a4 is already 2.5 inches. Would 3 inch piping be illegal because of the noise? I wonder if he thinks it's because I won't pass smog or something... He made it sound like a big deal, like he would be breaking the law or something [confused]

Shouldnt be illegal, the issue may be that he doesn't want to deal with fitting 3'' in there. I had 3'' on my B5

There's actually plenty of room and the B8's have a downpipe that starts almost at the bottom of the car because the CAT is so long. I guess I'll take it somewhere else....I wish he would do it though because his welding/exhaust fabrications skills are on point.

there's a shop called Ralph's mufflers in Fontana. they're good. I know a lot of ppl that have gone there. they're fairly cheap
As well. and they dnt say anything bout emissions nothing like that.. call 1 (909) 355-6603. if you want, to make sure and see how much they'll charge for whatever yu what.

Just FYI, Magnaflow makes a 3" cat-back for the B8 and it fits and looks perfect. My friend got one on sale a while ago for around $600 which is less than half off retail. Highly recommended.

And by the way, I think any aftermarket exhaust is technically illegal but not really a big issue unless you have catless straight pipes drawing attention from cops all the time...And I just noticed you are asking about DP's...everything I posted about was for cat-backs.
