Does anyone know what the finish on our cam lobes was when the cars were new? Polished? Crosshatched? Blued(hardened) etc? I was looking at mine through the oil fill cap, and not sure i like what I see. Does anyone have photos and mileage they can post? Service records show oil change at 2,900 miles, I bought it with 8,000 (new oil) changed it again @ 11,000 full syth.

Completely black on top when new. Black finish will wear out, starting from the inside and work it's way to the outside. The wear won't be completely smooth but as long as you're not looking right through the cam follower, it's probably more than fine given the mileage you stated. Post a pic of yours would help.

Not the follower, the lobes that you can see thru the oil fill cap. I was planning on inspecting/replacing the follower at 15,000

Ah right, half asleep here. Not sure, if the cam follower is really worn down by a lot in the middle and not quite as even as it should be (though the wear is slightly more in the middle vs the outer edges so if you rest the edge of a business card on top of the cam there will be a bit of light coming through the gap), then the lobe might be damaged.
This follower with 58,000 miles and the lobe is fine.

I'll post some pics when the sun comes up etc.. Basically my lobes (the 2 you can see thru the oil fill cap) have some discoloration on them, the shaft between the lobes is a light golden color, from the oil etc.. the lobes are the same on the outer 1st mm The center part of the lobes is silverish, but has some discoloration on some of the faces, reddish/dark gray in appearence.

I think if the wear on the cam follower is okay for the mileage you probably don't have to worry, indicating the lobe is smooth. If it wasn't which would be a bigger problem you'd be going through a cam follow every month.
Besides if yours is a 2005.5 to 2007 its covered by the extended warranty now.

I am not talking about the lobe that drives the fuel pump, I haven't checked that one yet. The ones under the oil fill cap don't look right to me, and I was curious what the finish was when new, and what other owners on here are looking at.

ha ha you're talking to the guy that still has some mud in his truck engine bay from 2008.
I do keep the outside looking clean though.
what do you do to clean the inside? I dont feel good pressure washing it, and I dont really want to take a rag to the whole thing.

LOL must have been pretty tired last night, cam ≠ lobe!
I haven't heard of any wear on the lobe itself, if the follower hasn't worn completely through the lobe is fine.
