inlaw has had dyno in his b6 for 230k miles (delvac) never once had a problem, sludge/carbon or other. Plus never had to top of the oil since synthetic is too slick

Use a synthetic blend if anything. And I wouldn't head over the 3,000 mile mark. I change my oil with full synthetic, then top it off over the course of 5 months with a less viscous oil or and oil additive and my car runs great!

While you're at it throw in some 87 octane too

hate to say it but he's done that for the last year

Regardless of your flame suit being on or not, is there a reason why you would consider running a conventional oil vs. a synthetic? Cost?

I used regular on my first oil change bc of the cost but seeing as ive only put like 2k miles on it in the last 6 months I will do synthetic on all the next changes.

People think "dino" oil is going to hurt an engine?

These engines were made specifically for synthetic. Why not put vinegar instead of coolant?

You own an Audi and you're concerned about the cost(s) of an oil change? You bought the wrong car.

I mean you COULD use conventional oil and 87 octane, but as Stewy said, if the extra $1.50 a tank and $20 an oil change is getting to you, then you should look elsewhere for cars. Maybe a nice Civic...

OP your friend sounds like cheap bastard. You should punch him in the mouth for all of us!

not to hate on you but running water/vinegar mixture once in a great while cleans a bunch of junk out of the insides. I do it at every 100k on all my vehicles (and 20k on my bike) and I am always amazed with the junk that comes out. I just let it get hot and cold 3-5 times. It doesnt stay in there more than a day.

Also, on the note of dino oil. Just how many of you guys hating on him have actually done any research short of watching a commercial? dino oil isnt bad, it is actually better for breakin on an engine than synth.
It definitely doesnt act as well to extremely hot temps (like those in a sitting turbo), but it doesnt make your engine go boom or anything. It will burn quicker, and leave more 'junk' behind, so you would definitely have to run some sort of cleaner from time to time, but you would probably come out ahead in the

What's wrong with saving money regardless of what car you drive?

Like others have said there is nothing wrong with regular oil, the engine is worse for itself with its many design flaws than any kind of cheap oil I could put in it. And I will have likely sold it long before (if any) issues arrise due to the use of conventinal oil over synth.

since 1/2 of the owners in here drive with an extra set of coils in there trunk the civic might be the better choice...just think about it, your driving around with spare parts in your trunk. Since I bought all three of the honda's the first thing I did was remove the tool pouch. been running dyno oil on all three of my 600rr's since day one (one is a track only bike) and still on all 3 stock clutches, and all with "hard break-in's"

This thread is great!!

OP, buy a GEO METRO... It will treat you right and I hear those things don't even NEED oil!!!!

I tried some royal purp in my sv650 and felt literally no difference. I'm pretty sure I used rotella on my last change. Btw, you bikers, should I really be adding fuel additive fir parking the bike all winter?

Nice bike choice, have a few close friends with them!
You should make sure that the fuel is above your in tank fuel pump (basically, just fill her up before storage), buy 'good gas' (as in not a shady gas station) because some cheaper gas will leave a nasty residue (more of an issue with carbureted than EFI though). Finally, I add some isoheet in mine. gets rid of moisture, and keeps everything lubed.

hope that helps! I even had to store my bike out in the snow for a month last year and it started right up after I put in the battery (literally didnt miss a beat)
