so my buddy nick (exanimas on here) and i both just recently baught our b7s a bit over a month ago and cam followers were on the top of the list for things to take care of. well we finally got around to it today. what we found was nothing short of hillarious. and by hillarious, i mean absolutely horrible and noone should ever wait 77k miles to do a cam follower, ever. now, he baught his car at a dealership and i have a feeling that they replaced his before the sale(hes just over 70k miles). I got mine private party off craigslist and it was all dealer serviced...but yea...mine deffinatly was never replaced. all i could do was laugh about how horribly worn it is. i inspected the cam lobe and it seems ok. still felt very smooth and didnt see any physical scoring, which is lucky. i also have no idea how my CEL was not on. Obsurd.
on to the LOL WUT:

After all the horror stories I heard, I decided to have mine checked out. 2007 6mt w/about 52k on the clock when I had it done, and I saw it myself when they pulled it- they said its the best looking one they've seen and I didn't even have to replace it. Could it be plain old luck? I guess so. At the time of having it checked, I have been chipped for about 5,000 miles. I had a new one all ready to drop in, but I just held out because it didn't need it at all. I will be doing it at 60k though to be on the safe side. For only 90 bucks its pretty affordable piece of mind. I think its one of those parts that can be fine for tens of thousands of miles then once a little wear starts to chip away at it, it exponentially degrades the material and it can go haywire within 5 thousand miles or much less.
btw...did you have any hunch at all you had cam follower wear before you decided to replace it? Yo umentioned you had no CEL, so maybe it was just there lurking for a while. Did you notice any difference in feel or driveability after replacing?

i litterally just replaced it 2 hours ago. only took the car around the neighborhood to make sure there were no leaks as i didnt have a new gasket for the HPFP. i didnt notice much of a difference either tbh. but again, i drove maybe a mile tops. The only reason i even decided to replace it was because of people on here talking about the issue so much, and also a tech i work with used to work at audi and told me to check it.
Definitely... my story (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/457850-Few-hundred-miles-after-55k-service-now-I-m-getting-a-CEL-for-Knock-Sensor).

That's bad. I bet your cam and hpfp tip is bad too.

Yeah, did you inspect the piston on the hpfp? There is no follower left as a mediator between the cam and hpfp. Something had to have worn.

dude, if your cam follower is like that, everything else is already fucked. you need a new cam, you need a new fuel pump. sure you can drive it like it is now, but its only gonna break again, and with in a few weeks/months this time. the car you bought probably had a high pressure fuel pump before (if it doesn't have it now). so yeah, be prepared to spend a couple bucks at the dealer in parts

well good news in this i guess is that i talked to my companys audi dealer before buying this car, and was told that audi does cover cam follower problems. i asked if they covered cam replacement if the cam needed to be, and was told that it should be covered but they havnt seen the issue of the cam needing to be replaced. which ya sounds like a typical dealer story, but based my experience working in dealership enviroments the past 4-5 years, is true. a lot of people seem to want to overcompensate for things and replace things that dont really need to be. i can see the HPFP needing to be replaced since the piston did seem a little weaker than my friends, however when i inspected the cams they both seems very smooth with no noticable scoring.
in either case, im going to call them monday morning and get more info.

I replaced my cam follower when i bought the car 05.5 2.0T with 84k miles on it, never was replaced per dealer that had it since day one but mine looked brand new. Maybe my previous owner babied it. But for how cheap it is i plan to check it every oil change now.

UPDATE 12/6/11
Got my car to Audi (with old cam follower reinstalled). They've ordered the cam, lifter, follower, hpfp, and all gaskets and seals. HPFP is on backorder, but they said it should be ready sometime next week. All should be covered. Needless to say, I am fucking pumped! I didn't even think they'd replace the hpfp for me let alone everything else!

dang, you lucked out!
I wonder how much warranty work they are going to do before they just throw the same cam/roller setup in ours as they do in the V6's in ours. for free! (I wish)

tell me about it! when i get it back, ill try to remember to compare part numbers of the cam they put in, to the v6 cam.
i should mention also, my car was under extended warrenty 120,000miles or 10 years. not all of these cars are. Audi of america should beable to tell you if yours is. i honestly dont know how i have that coverage, since i baught it privatesale on craigslist...but im not complaining! It was however a CPO serviced all at the dealer so maybe that has something to do with it?

Hopefully they do a good job tearing your motor apart and putting it back together. This was mine at 46k on the dot, 2008

im sure they will. They litterally built my B6 1.8T for me. Even though it was only really a "refresh" with IE rods, rings, bearings, seals/gaskets, cylinder head, etc. They only did this work because i work for the company though. Otherwise they probably would have laughed if i asked to install aftermarket rods lol

you wont have the V6 cam since the lobe for the HPFP is different (since it basically has a thin line versus the area of a circle to work with). But I bought mine used and I got a letter as well for 120k but it doesnt include the cam junk
