I like many of you was very disgusted that our cars (2.0t's) would burn oil at an alarming rate. I was never a fan of Mobil 1 and not to big of a fan of Castrol. After building the motor in my Vrt a few years ago and after the brake in period I started to run Royal Purple and notice lower oil temps and less pressure loss at temps after romping on it. I bought a Mkv gti afterwards and hated it; it burnt oil, drove like shit and had cel after cel...

I then got an Evo and loved that car but it didnt make the best daily as it literally drove like a racecar but when you were in the mood for it that car was second to none. One of the great things that came from my experience with Evo's is that their tech section on Evo m is awesome and their aftermarket performance research is phenomenal.

With that being said, there was a test on oil preformed by one of the most respected Evo performance shops. These results made performance companys such as FP to recommend that Mobil one not be used because of the detergents and low zinc.

Well enough of that background junk...

I bought my 08 A4 S line off a buddy of mine and he was very honest letting me know that it did burn oil, not terribly but noticeable on the dipstick. I dont think any 2008 car should burn oil as my 06 evo being driven daily at 28 psi and driven hard didnt burn a drop. My buddy did the oil change in the A4 every 5k with castrol 5w 40.

It was time for me to do an oil change so i decided to do a ton of maintenance; seafoamed, plugs, oil, oil filter, serp belt, fuel filter, cabin filter, cam follower... (@50k the original follower was to bad)

I decided to go with my brand of choice, Royal Purple in a 5w 30 and I used there HPS line as it is high in zinc with would be beneficial to the cam follower.

My results.... the piont of this thread... haha.

After 1000 miles i have not noticed a change on the dipstick... I couldnt believe it. I even decided to check it at a later point thinking it was a fluke and sure enough, same results. Im pretty stoked!

Im couldnt be happier and i wanted to share my results, it worked for me and hopefully it will work for you!

thanks!

No oil burning here either! (knocking on wood)

Although I do know there are many out there that do experience this, so props on some (what seems to be) good & useful info. My only question: why 5w30 and not 5w40 or 0w40? Any reason in particular?

Hey, Royal Purple is darn good oil! So is AMSOIL as well. I have been running AMSOIL in my Ducati and GSX-R track bike too. For the Audi had the dealer put in the last oil change this past summer, when they also did the center diff and other gear oil. Think they used Castrol Synthetic.

I will take your advice and try Royal Purple next oil change. Haven't burned much that I can tell. Been a few thousand miles.

I had a completely stock B7 FWD. Had the pre-paid service at the dealership. When I came back, whatever oil they used burnt easily. Low oil indicator came in a few thousand kms. I topped up with Mobil 0w40 and hadn't had problems after.

Be careful of running purple oil in the summer, it's thinner than most other oils out there. So if you have a lead foot like I do, you might have an issue if your not checking it.

I have 162k miles and have always ran Mobil1 0W40 and never burn or had to add oil. Change oil every 5k and sometimes gets pushed to 6k and the oil still looks good. I have been very happy with the Mobil1 and have 100k and 50k miles on my cam followers and they still looked good.

^This, I have heard numerous times that royal purple tends to sheer down below its specified weight.

I run Shell Rotella T 5w-40 synthetic in all of my cars. It has one of the highest zinc contents available in a non-boutique oil and is significantly cheaper than mobil 1 and royal purple. I also add Lubromoly Mos2 to increase molybdenum disulphide content in the oil increasing its anti-wear properties. I run this setup in both my A4 2.0t and my S4 4.2 with absolutely no oil consumption. Even with the addition of the Lubromoly mos2, it still ends up being significantly cheaper than running any boutique oil.

I havent heard the brake down issue with Royal purple and i use to auto x and road course the evo regularly.

As far as the burning i guess its just a hit or miss. I just wanted to share my experience with those who do have this issue.... i also get royal purple very cheap so i figured why the hell not lol

I don't run the Mos2 additive but do run Shell Rotella T6 5w40 and don't burn any oil, even @ 108,xxx miles. Even though it is technically a diesel engine oil, I also ran it in my CBR1000RR and my wife's CBR600RR and they had no issues. I'll be getting a Blackstone UOA done soon on the A4 and will hopefully remember to post my results, but you can check out bobistheoilguy.com and he runs the same oil in a 2.0T FSI with great results.

I get Mobil 00-40 european oil on base for really cheap :-)
Only time I've experienced oil burn is when my PCV went bad.
