View Full Version : 01E trans swap worth it?

I have a 2000 a4 ATW 1.8t Quattro 5spd First gear is pretty much shot I've been reading the threads and I know all the parts I need to do a 01E trans swap and I have access to the parts needed

What I wanna know is if the swap is worth it. Or should I just throw another 01A trans in?

If your making big power and dont want to break 3rd gear all the time and dont drag race your car then yes 01E could be worth it.

Depends how big you want to go. If you're shooting for like 350, I wouldn't bother. You're just going to sell it soon anyways :)

Like Mike Hood said, I wouldn't do it if you are going for drag racing; the gear ratios of the 5 speed are better matched.

I did the 6 speed swap on my A4 V6, for the same reasons. 1st gear was shot.

You said that you have access to all the parts, but maybe just for other folks, here is what is required;

- 01e 6 speed transmission
- 01e transmission mount brackets
- 01e throwout arm
- 01e shifter linkage and stabilizer bar
- 01e 6 speed shifter box (if you want a lock out reverse)
- 01e S4 driveshaft
- 01e S4 front axles
- 01e rear differential
- 01e bell housing spacer
- B5 S4 clutch and flywheel
- B5 S4 uprights (or B5 V6 uprights)

You do not need the S4 rear axles; you can just swap the differential axle flanges from the 1.8T diff to the S4 diff (S4 diff is required because of the 4.11 gear ratio, which the A4 does NOT use). Things such as the transmission mount bracket and throwout arm and bellhousing spacer are not included with most used transmission unless you buy the entire drivetrain.

Needless to say, the swap is more involved
