View Full Version : Oil in Catch can question

I've already got my flame suit on, don't worry..

It's my first winter with the catch can, and k04, and autotech hpfp... I also just got my car back after it had a "thermal incident" (did the K04 after that)...

Anyways, so my question is this: in the winter months I know there's condensation that obviously builds up in the catch can, but the residue/oil that I have in mine
1) smells like gas (I logged the fuel trims, etc. and pulled out the hpfp to check if there is fuel leaking, and all info points to no)
2) is a milk chocolate color

Is this normal? The oil in the catch can prior to it getting cold outside was the regular color, and I don't think there was a fuel smell.. Also, I did the "smell the dipstick and oil cap" routine and there is no fuel smell there..

If I'm being paranoid and retarded, please let me know...

Edit: After searching a couple other forums (gti, and caddy cts) it appears to be normal for winter... http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/2009-cadillac-cts-v-general-discussion/236596-catch-can-contents-summer-vs-winter.html

Mine doesn't look like chocolate milk though, it looks more like apple juice.

Smell your oil, if it smells like gas than worry cause your internal hpfp seal is shot.
Other than that don't worry

Well that's the mystery. the oil/water combo in the catch can smells like fuel, but the dipstick and oil cap don't..

Is it just the blow-by in the catch can? My fuel trims for idle are between -1.8 and + 1.8 at idle, and the driving one is at 6%... From reading up on here and vortex and mkv forums that seems to be normal and not indicative of a leak.

The requested vs actual hpfp pressure is fine as well (pump puts out over the requested pressure by at least 3 bar, up to 9 bar over at the upper rpms).

The lpfp starts off at 4.74 bar at idle and trickles down to 3.8 bar at redline.. so again, seems normal.
