I live at elevation, so I will always pick the turbo car. But if I was a3 sea level, I'd take the S4.

B7 styling is just so much nicer and if moderately modded is as fast as an s4, however, the sound of the v8 is so sweet. still donno if i would ever jump a model back (i.e downgrade in terms of body) of course u could always drop the extra coin and get a b7s4.....

+ nicer interior, exterior etc as standard over the A4.

It's all well and good modding an A4, but it will never be an S4.

OP if you can afford the gas of the S4 then its no contest. S4 every time.

Have the best of all worlds get an A4 as a daily driver and get a fast car for going fast.

Thats not his budget, thats how much hes getting for his totalled car.

Get the S4. B6 body style is pretty awesome (htough thats subjective of course). A V8 always wins over a tiny turbo I4 regardless of how modded it is.

not true the only good thing about v8's is the sound... turbo lag was only created so v8's could keep up with turbo'd 4 cylders

I would say the s4, interior is the same but the exterior looks a little worse at least in my opinion.

HAHA. I'll take the VQ37 in my old G37 over my 1.8t or 2.0t ANY DAY and its a lame V6! The gas mileage to fun ratio of a small turbo engine though can't be beat. But yea 4 cylinder engines sound like ass...

We don't always get the opportunity to hop into a new ride without having go through the hassle of selling the old one...get the S4 or forever wish you had!

Or actually if I had 14k to drop on a car I would buy a 4 door e36 m3 with a supercharger for ~ $9k. That would give you just as much crank hp as the S4 with much better mpg and better handles. Add 2k for a new pulley and Dinan stage 2 software and you're pushing 410chp...$1k for teh coils and you're in business. You'd even have money left over for recaros! [drool]

Or if you need the AWD stick with Audi

S4 all the way. The 4.2 is bulletproof compared to the 2.0T.

Have you read about engine failures and chain tensions on the 4.2? Also, the 2.0T is less on maintenance cost in all things.

Interestingly, you could always buy a b6s4 and modify the front to accept the B7 bumper. But personally id just buy the b7 and throw a k04 or larger on it and maybe swap out the seats. was your b7 modded? +1 for the b7 if it was since you can transfer stuff.

I went from a B5 s4 to a b6 s4 and hated it even with the full exhaust tune and it was slow slow slow
I now have a b7 2.0 with a tune test pipe and it will run away from the 4.2 s4 and I get 6 to 8 mpg better with my foot in it

S4 all the way imo. I love the look of them and the V8 is awesome, my insurance would be retarded with one though i'm sure as it's already pricey with an A4.

Bullshit. NA power feels a LOT different than turbo Power.

he must be at elavation because a tune and test pipe might get you 275 hp best case scenario, compared to 340 hp

I even call bullshit. I feel I have one if the stronger stage 2 cars out there (285chp/385ctq) and I live at 6k elevation and couldn't walk a v8 S4. No waaaaay.

my guess is that avant is referring to the low end torque of the k03, not the high rpm power where the v8 easily trumps the tiny 4 banger. stage 2+ k03 makes more torque that the v8 so it probably has a better feel to it if you keep revs below 4k.

It's true! I peaked at 302 torque to the wheels at ~3200 RPM, but it goes straight down hill from there. I raced an EVO the other day, and kept up with him for 2 seconds until his turbo spooled, and mine slowed down. Lol.

Pretty sure V8 S4's dyno at around 250 whp at 5500 feet. Turbo wins everytime at higher elevation.

I've had every Audi platform besides the B5 (which is my favorite) and i'll tell you right now that nothing compares to the B6 S4. I'd take it over my dad's old RS4 as well. It's torquey, sounds great, love the B6 styling, handles great and is just one of the best cars out there. Not to mention that i'ts pretty damn quick for basic bolt ons. I had an APR Stage 3+ B7 A4 and my friend had the same car. When i got my S4 all i did was full exhaust and a tune and i pulled on the A4 every time. If power means anything to you, you'll need 12-15k in mods before you touch a basic bolt on S4. Now i have a B8 A4 and i can hang with a bone stock S4 under 80mph but from a 40 or 60 roll i'll get toasted. There's no replacement for displacement and the sound the S4 makes is one of a kind. Also were in an era of hybrid, electric, diesel technology taking over along with the manual becoming obsolete. Pick up the last manual, v8 Audi sedan that will prob ever be produced.

I say S4. My car was totaled and I was looking around at available A4's at the time, there wasn't much. So i got the B7 S4 i found locally. My only problem was it was a tiptronic, at first. I loose some more powaaa than the 6spd MT but waiting till i get that tune :)

I actually have a good story that backs this up nicely. When i got my S4 and did some minor mods my friend (Staticuxo) still had his B7 A4 with full awe exhaust, testpipe and apr stage 2+. We were both 100% after driving the A4 that it was def faster. We were convinced lol.. Then one day we figured we'd do a quick pull to see the difference. The S4 from a 2nd gear roll on put approx 5-6 cars on the A4 by the time i let off before i even got into 4th. The A4 does feel quicker because of the torque but the S4 up top is really really quick.

The 6spd MT's are, tiptronics lack a bit lol

I went from a B7 A4 to a B6 S4. S4 hands down except MPG.
Do your research b/c S4's have issues and repairs are expensive!

If I were to go "back" in time the only one I'd be in the hunt for is a 2003 RS6.

I owned a B6 S4 with full exhaust and tune for two year, just sold it for B7 avant. I just installed full exhaust, testpipe, carbonio, uni stage 2 in the avant, and the power is not like the B6 S4. Personally, I prefer the look, feel, and mpg of the b7 avant however. Must be because its my unicorn.

The S4 is really nice but it won’t get you low cost car insurance (http://hartfordauto.thehartford.com/) or gas prices. I suppose the A4 would be most practical, if you’re into that.
