View Full Version : Headlight adjustment issue

I have been living with low pointing headlights for the past few years after blacking out my headlights and today I finally decided to adjust them (don't know why it took me so long because its so easy, but whatever). They are the adaptive bi-xenons and I did the whole point at a wall, and adjust the screw on the top of the headlight. I only adjusted it enough to move the light beam a few inches up the wall, but I apparently maxed out the headlight setting because it started to click every quarter turn to the right or so. I guess I was too close to the wall, because that few inches is now too high... When I tried to turn the screw back to the left, I now get the same clicking noise and the headlight doesn't adjust. Anyone experience this before or have any suggestions on what to do to get the adjustment ability back?
Short version:
Adjusted my headlights past the max height, now the screw just clicks and won't lower or raise the beam anymore.

On the back of the headlamp assembly take off the plastic bulb cover near the adjustment screw and reach inside. There is a sort of ball joint on the adjustment mechanism. I would expect the ball has popped out and needs to be reseated. You may be able to do this on the vehicle if you have small hands.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm actually getting my timing belt replaced in two days, so maybe I can fix the headlights while the front end is off, because I definitely have fat hands...

I'm looking to adjust mine as well.. Same situation. I'd like to hear your resolution.

Factory xenons have an auto level function. You need to put the headlight module into Learn mode before making headlight adjustments, otherwise the auto-level mechanism will "readjust" your settings on the fly. Procedure is described in the link above and also at http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/xenonalignment.html

Bringing this back from the dead because I am having the same issue. After reading through some older threads this seams to be the most logical response I have seen. I haven't had a chance to check it out for myself just quite yet but curious to know if anyone else has had this issue and resolved it?
I read from Phil that all the internals are Bakelite plastic and basically if it's broken they are almost impossible to repair and they are not sold as spare parts. I'm hoping this isn't the case!
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I should also mention this is for NON adaptive headlights.

Easy to see if the internals are damaged:
Remove the 2 screws of the rear door
Try to move side to side and up or down the d1s bulb: since they are not adaptive, you should not have any play.
Let me know
