I'm moving the conversation from here

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/449150-Problem-with-Goodyear-Eagle-GT-235-35-19-sidewall-bubbling-splitting.

into this new thread. For those who did read the thread above the short story goes like this: I got the front passenger tire looking like this and I'm trying to find the cause.

Some said it's because of driving through potholes and having the pressure low which is not the case, I'm very careful driving and check my tire pressure regularly. Mr. shickadance said that it could be a bad alignment or a blown strut. My car is in the alignment shop, they'll recheck it tomorrow (it's back there cause I had the alignment done about two weeks ago and I've had the car going all over the road since, something must e wrong - I hope this is the issue). I stopped by the shop this morning to take things out of the car and looked at it a bit more careful. I couldn't see any leak from the strut or that side being lower. I'll look again when they'll have the car on the alignment machine tomorrow.
But I have this video showing a clunk noise when I push the brake either way I'm going forward or backwards. It comes from the same wheel, not sure what it is. I want to believe is just the brake pad not being tight in the place and is moving around. The guy at the shop put the car on the lift and we both looked at it and could't see anything being loose or looking wrong. Anyway I'll keep posting new details as I get them, maybe it could be of help to somebody else too.

You can hear the "clunk" at sec 09 and 15.

odd, i run these tires on the track and have never had a problem. they are discontinued so you probably won't find a replacement on tirerack, discounttire, mavis, etc. i demolished one of these on a pothole and found a replacement on ebay in case you want to replace the tire rather than buy an entire different set. http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w84/flaco_nyc/Random/bentwheel.jpg good luck. sorry i can't help as to a cause for the splitting, but i can tell you these tires perform very well for the price and i have not had any splitting or other issues on mine.

Thanks for the info. I've heard good things about these tires too, I'm just trying find the issue, I just put my winter wheels on with new winter tires, I don't want to destroy one of those.

I think being discontinued is the problem lol.

I mean they usually discontinue things for a reason...

sometimes you just get a bad tire out of the bunch. they make hundreds of thousands of these each year, i'm sure a handful of them are screwy. generals are decent tires for the price, but there's a reason why they're on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

i'd shoot them an e-mail with some pictures, if you're lucky maybe they'll send you some tires discounted or for free (especially if you still have a lot of tread left). something like that looks more like a manufacturers defect rather than abuse.

^ this. had nothing to do with quality issues. tire makers discontinue very good tires frequently to bring in new series with compound advancements e.g. contisportcontact 2->3->5, bridgestone blizzak lm25->lm60. general now has the altimax hp to replace the exclaim uhp. those general uhp tires got glowing reviews for a very low price range. complaints with these particular tires involved things like road noise, not splitting. besides myself, i know several people who run them at the track and no one ever mentioned this type of issue.

I understand your point, it's not as much as getting a new tire as much as finding the problem that caused this if there is one. It is possible just to be a bad tire, I hope this is the case. As I said above I don't want to be damaging tires every few months. I actually called them yesterday and I have to go to an "insurance company" (I guess) today so they can inspect the tire and I'll go from there. But if there's a problem with suspension, alignment I would be happy to find it.

Do you have the DOT on the side of the tire? I've cracks similar to this on old tires. The last 4 numbers of the full DOT #'s on tire will tell you when the tire itself was manufactured.

I'm aware that manufacturers update designs. But they changed the model name as well, so I assumed the tire was discontinued for other reasons. Nut as someone else said, they are cheap tires for a reason. Could very well be a design flaw. It could also just be a bad run of tires, or just a lemon tire. Who knows. My point was depending on the age of the tire that sort of cracking is clearly not normal and should be addressed by the manufacturer. Assuming they aren't like 8 year old tires.
