so my AC went out a few weeks ago and I didn't really think anything of it. I just kept the AC off. But today it started smoking as I was heading to class. It seems to be coming out of what I assume is the compressor. Almost seems like it's coming out of the pulley? Not sure exactly. Either way. It's smoking pretty bad and whether the AC is on or off.

But my question is: is it safe to drive it? I know it seems sort of dumb lol but its my only way of getting around and I don't have any other options right now and I cant afford to have my car catch fire lol. Is there a way I can disconnect the AC?

If the compressor pulley is seized you can just remove the a/c belt.

If you don't have tools or time, just cut the belt with a box cutter and forget it.

^^ x2 Cut the belt or loosen the tensioner and call it a day.

Unless you have a 2.8 because those only have 1 accessory belt.

^This is true. I often just assume people have 1.8T's. I really shouldn't do that.

Well it is a safe assumption, us 2.8 guys aren't too common on forums.
