Im looking to buy a new car because my 98 audi a4 2.8 tip-tron was just totaled. Im looking into a few cars and need to know which will be the fastest, most luxurious, best overall vehicle. Here are my options and also add any ideas you might have as far as cars not listed...

b5 audi a4 1.8t 5spd
00 bmw 540i 6spd
00-02 bmw 3series 5speed

Please help I really dont want to make the wrong choice!

the b5 isn't "fast."

I would say your best bet would be the 540i.

The B5 can be made fast, but if you look at the numbers there is no competition. The 540i with the 4.4 V8 make almost 300hp, stock. I think it's like 280ish or something, the B5 makes around 150-180 stock, depending on the year. That being said, Quattro is the shit. If it's speed and luxury you want, go with the BMW. It is a fast car, and very comfy.

It'll get up and go, but it certainly isn't as fast as the 540.

If you DO NOT have a need for the amazing system called Quattro :P then 540 all the way. I am kind of surprised at that choice though, given a price point but the E39 BMW's are great machines. In my area a E39 runs from 6k for the 528 (I think) and 9+ for 540 with the M5's up closer to 13k to 25k. If you are talking that amount why not a B5 S4, C5, or B6. Obv the S4 is the "fast" option along with the 540.

Edit: just saw the other post on the b5 S4 forum about looking at the 4500 hundred S4 that was in limp. I'd say if you only have 6k max the e39 is out of your price range for maintenance and cost of car, unless you can find one in nice condition for dirt cheap (I doubt). The 3 series and a4 are your two good options around your range that you've mentioned.

I guess after market hp BUILD up would be a determining factor.

What ~holds back an A4 is the eternals, considering holding back I mean where you have to beef up the motor once getting to a certain hp mark, being ~350 and people do throw a rod on much less then that. And I only say this as it's a big(ger) deal to yank your motor and build it up to handle hp (as opposed to all these turbo kits that simply BOLT on, in a day).

Considering that A4 has already an exhaust and FMIC, a single day, with basic tools, can take your ~170HP Audi to ~350. In a single day of work, ~$2,000/second hand classifieds)

Now, if that Audi has no exhaust, and has no FMIC, well....those ARE needed and should come first....and now it starts to add up. And with that GT2871R.......you're gonna need an after market clutch as the OEM will NOT last. I know nothing about the other cars.

If I wasn't brand conscious and really didn't care, and I knew another motor and clutch could handle 200+ more HP compared to the rival as it sits with out touching the internals it could influence me.

williamri can get the 00 540i @ 185k for around 6500... im still thinking a lower mileage a4 1.8 might be the way to go just because of the high mileage but correct me if im wrong... 7k is what i have at the moment... income not acounted

Whats the service history like for the 540? That engine is prone to timing chain issues (had to replace them on my 740 at 90k) which is an expensive repair if you can't DIY. Then theres the OSV issue as well.

good service history. Timing chain already replaced. whats the OSV issue? I can do most myself considering im in school for auto tech diploma and motorcycle tech diploma haha

The OSV is basically the bmw version of a pcv valve, the diaphragm in it rips and then the car sucks oil into the intake. its not a terrible fix if you're good with a wrench and you can always bypass it entirely with a catch can setup.

3 series and 1.8 a4 are bottom of the barrel "luxury" cars. You want the fastest most luxurious? 540.

Volvo S60R is awesome! Skip the S60, go for the R version.

Bmw, get an M3.
Audi, S anything
VW the R32 is great!

The V8 bimmer runs on the cheap 87oct too and still blasts the doors off a stock/chipped 1.8t.
