I know the older guys are gonna hate on this but hear me out. My mom backed into my car (the side) and wrecked the paint and it was quoted at $1080. Im not about to undercut my family's on insurance plan so I'm goin out on a limb with this one.

so.... the paints fucked up time todo a body work overhaul.....

Heres the plan deleting as much trim as i can (im an engineer and gettin access to a mig welder to fill the holes)

then a cheap a$$ vinyl wrap.

I'm following this

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=376442

i figure if i don't like it w/e. I dont have the money to spend im a college student and one of my friends just died (if your from the san jose area his name was Dan Strickland he was my Professor/mentor/boss and friend Killed on 280 last thursday(rest in peace))this week so i need a project. I'll update as much as possible. Not makin this a build thread cuz i feel like its not that big...

Sparknotes:
-need based vinyl wrap
-deleting trim

wish me luck boys ive never done this before and im a perfectionist... imma drive myself crazy

Would love to see the progress... Do a daily update with pics. If yours turns out well, I may be ballsy enough to finally do something to my hood/bumper.

if you have a less than perfect canvas to start with (ie big scratches, small dents etc) you will still see them when u vinyl.

Post up a pic, have you tried to buff it out?

urban96

A glossy vinyl might not look good for long before it starts showing tiny scratches (like swirl marks) as the vinyl surface isnt as strong as a paints clear coat.

ya tried to buff it no luck.

not gloss matte.

And a bit of an update:

25yrd of vinyl arrived a my house today.... however weather has been shitty so i'm waiting for it to clear up a bit to get started

i've done it the rear quarter where the trunk / tail light and bumper meet is a pain in the ass... use a propane torch in one hand and vinyl in the other and you should be able to do a pull / stretch around the compound curve.

my advoce:
use a real heatgun, use a blowtorch for "fine tuning" and felt tipped squeegees are your friend.

I do this kinda stuff all day...... www.Sticker-Bomb.com

I strongly considered wrapping my car as well but I ended up choosing to paint it myself. The biggest reason, if you read through that thread some professionals commented saying the vinyl he used was not meant to last more then a year and it has a permanent glue which may not be good for paint. The guy in the thread only did it for a year so its tough to tell longevity of the stuff. The proper wraps from 3M and Oracal are upwards of $600. I was able to do paint for less than that.

http://www.uscutter.com/ORACAL-651-Intermediate-Cal-Vinyl-48-x-50-Yard-Roll-ORS6514850
This is the stuff that he used.
You could try it but I would save the money and go with the products that are meant for wrapping vehicles.

i actually do alot of work with vinyl.. for wraps and vinyl that is going to be contoured to unusual or not flat surfaces, high performance vinyl is the way to go.. the vinyl that u purchased is intermidiate or calender vinyl. it tends to be a little thicker and stiffer/less able to conform to funky surfaces.. it also only has a life of around 6years in the sun.. it all has to do with the way the vinyl is produced.. high performance is cast, making it more of a rubber and last much longer.

PS guys weathers still crappy probably gonna work more this weekend... currently ive ripped off all the middle side trim and the lower door trim... have to patch the holes and sand'um then more vinyl... car looks hilarious rite now as a dd... fender hood and roof black glue from the trim on the sides and a permanently rolled down window (regulator broken) feel like i have a real project car in my driveway
